Cyprus holiday hell: Thomas Cook beef up security at hotel after tourists are targeted by child-snatchers

SCOTS tourists have been forced to flee their hotel after families were targeted by a gang of child-snatchers.

A gang dressed as waiters tried to snatch children from a hotel packed with holidaymakers .

Now tour operators Thomas Cook have moved around 120 British holidaymakers from the hotel amid fears for children’s safety.

The kids, all under 10, were being led to a car by a man and woman when a sharp-eyed holidaymaker saw the danger and confronted the couple.

The alleged abductors – believed to be Romanians – were quickly grabbed, frogmarched to the hotel office and handed over to local police.

Dad-of-two Greg Letford, 28, from Dundee said: “This Romanian couple were leading the two young children towards a waiting car, another person had a third child up against a wall ready to go too. Someone saw what they were up to and stopped them.

“If he hadn’t been there those kids would have gone.

“One of the men got away and we heard the getaway car crashed a short distance away too.

“When police turned up they took the man and woman into an office in the hotel and a crowd built up in the foyer – there must have been about 60 or 70 really angry people. It was chaos. The police got them into a van through a window for their protection.”

Holidaymakers – mainly from Scotland and Ireland – were offered a new hotel in nearby Pathos by tour organisers Thomas Cook.

A company spokeswoman confirmed they were treating the incident extremely seriously.

She said: “Thomas Cook has requested an increased and immediate security presence at the hotel.

“The safety and welfare of our customers is always our priority and upon hearing about the incident we immediately deployed our experienced resort team to provide customer support.

“While incidents of this nature are extremely rare, we’d like to reassure all customers this is being taken incredibly seriously and we are continuing to work closely with the local authorities.”

It is understood that a gang of at least 10 men and women had been scoping out the plush hotel for the last week.

They were spotted filming and taking photographs of the children as they played in the pool and it is claimed some wore waiters’ outfits to blend in to their surroundings.

Police maintained a security presence at the hotel throughout yesterday as they investigated the allegations.

Dad-of-two Greg was staying there as part of the 25-strong wedding party.

A member of the Dundee wedding group said: “What should have been a fantastic wedding has turned into a bit of a nightmare.

“Just thinking of what might have happened to those children makes your stomach flip. After it happened, we started patrolling around the accommodation to keep an eye out for them again. We just couldn’t take chances.”

The Anastasia Beach Complex is run by Thomas Cook and is on the eastern tip of Cyprus. It has 191 rooms and 50 studios and apartments.

On the company website it is described as being “a perfect family choice”. It has a kids’ splash pool, water park and a lazy river.

Holidaymakers, who were mainly from Scotland and Ireland, were offered a new hotel in nearby Paphos by Thomas Cook.

Cyprus authorities say child abduction claims appear to be unfounded

Authorities in Cyprus have cast doubt on claims of an attempted child abduction earlier this week.

Dundee man Greg Letford, 28, told The Courier that a couple had led two young children towards a waiting car and another person had a third child “ready to go”.

However, local police said a 19-year-old man had been questioned and released after tourists reported seeing a man filming young children on his mobile phone.

Nothing untoward was found on his phone or during a search of his home, the force said, and officers returned to the hotel to speak to tourists who were concerned that the man was part of a child abduction gang.

The UK Government has described the incidents as “concerning” and consular officers have since visited the eastern coastal resort of Protaras to provide advice and support, while police in the country continue to investigate.

Local police have said their initial investigations do not substantiate some of the most serious claims made, but their statement has left Scots families accusing Cypriot authorities of a cover-up.

'People are trying to cover this up'

Responding to suggestions that the abduction claims were unfounded, one woman contacted The Courier to say: “My family just returned from this hotel last night and were present when the attempted abduction took place.

“The abductors … had been taking pictures of the children all week – unknown to the parents.

“My family were terrified. I am absolutely disgusted that people are trying to cover this up.”

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “Our consular officers provided advice and support to the family involved following this concerning incident.

“This is now a matter for the local police.”

A Dundee father-of-two has spoken of his horror as a criminal gang attempted to abduct British children from his hotel in Cyprus.

As many as eight Eastern European men and women are believed to have been involved in the incident, which saw them attempt to lead three children away.

Greg Letford, 28, was in the popular resort of Protaras with his wife and children as part of 20-strong group that had travelled for a wedding when the shocking incident took place.

“There was clearly a detailed plan to abduct these children and it is incredibly lucky that it was stopped,” he said.

“Had we not seen what we have, it would be difficult to believe that it had actually taken place.”

Mr Letford said holidaymakers had abandoned the Anastasia Beach Hotel in their droves after the incident, while others had secured immediate flights home.

Scots father: Kidnap gang filmed my children before thwarted abduction
By Catriona MacPhee
18 June 2015 10:22 BST

A Scots father has claimed his children were filmed by child abductors who were later caught trying to lead young Brits into a pick-up truck.

A group of 27 holidaymakers from Dundee were caught up in an alleged attempted abduction on Tuesday night and say they have been left "terrified".

The gang's attempt was foiled when several parents spotted three children being led away from the Anastasia Beach Hotel in Protaras and intercepted them.

The parents, from Dundee, fear their children could have been targets after a man who had been taking photographs and videos around the pool area when they were present later turned out to be in the gang

The group, which included nine children, had been in Cyprus for a wedding and assumed the gang member using his camera phone to capture the scenes was also a holidaymaker.

The groom, who wished to remain anonymous, told STV News the incident had "horrified" the group. Half of them have cut their trip short and the rest have been moved to a new hotel far away from the Anastasia.

It is understood that around 50 holidaymakers have now been moved from the hotel.

He said: "It was actually one of our children's friends who was taken. They made friends on holiday. It's just beyond belief. We're absolutely horrified and just can't believe what's happened.

"Basically we noticed a guy coming to the pool and playing with the children the days before it happened. He was taking photos of the area and filming on his phone.

"Then one night one of the parents spotted the children getting led away. The gang had a pick-up truck with the doors open.

"He stopped them just before they got away and along with another guy managed to get hold of two members of the gang.

"The van drove away and got chased but it hit a lamp post."

The witness said that police were quickly called and the two gang members who were caught by the parents were taken into a room in the hotel.

Police 'Cover Up' Plot To Kidnap British Kids
Holidaymakers are "up in arms" over the response to an alleged attempted kidnapping of three British children at a Cyprus hotel.

By Connor Sephton, Sky News Online

Police in Cyprus are "covering up" allegations that a gang attempted to abduct three British children at a popular holiday resort, it has been claimed.

According to a relative of a Scottish tourist who saw the incident, investigators are "acting like nothing happened" at the Anastasia Beach Hotel on Tuesday.

He told Sky News holidaymakers were "up in arms" over the police response, as officers have insisted on social media that no evidence of a failed kidnapping has been found.

The relative, who does not wish to be named, claimed one of the men involved in the abduction attempt had video clips on his phone of children playing in the hotel's pool - and had worn a staff uniform to avoid detection.

Describing the incident, he added: "A waiter who had been in the pool area with the children walked with two young boys out the front door.

"An Irish guy at the bar spotted this and thought something wasn't right, so he followed them out the door. A pick-up truck pulled up and (the waiter) tried to bungle the kids in.

"The Irish guy punched the waiter to the floor, and told the kids to run back into the hotel. Members of staff came from the hotel and detained the guy.

"Basically, the police in the hotel are trying to cover it up and act like nothing's happened."

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has described the incident at the complex as "concerning", and confirmed that assistance had been provided to a British family.

According to police in Cyprus, the only person questioned after the incident was a 19-year-old man, who was suspected of filming underage children.

Officers said they had searched through his mobile phone and his home, but concluded he had only taken photographs of adults involved in a dance performance at the hotel.

The owners of the Anastasia Beach Hotel, which is regularly used by British tour operators including Thomas Cook, agreed with the police version of events.

A director of Tsokkos, the company which runs the hotel, told Sky News the attempted abduction claims were "exaggerated", adding: "This is untrue. Nobody tried to take the kids away."

Sky News understands around 50 to 60 tourists, mainly from the UK, have left the hotel early and are now staying at a five-star hotel in Paphos - a three-hour drive from the complex in Protaras.

Thomas Cook said it had assisted 16 customer bookings who requested a move to another hotel and two families who travelled back to the UK early.

A spokeswoman said: "Although there are conflicting reports as to what exactly occurred at the property, we would like to reassure all customers that we take all allegations incredibly seriously and we are continuing to work closely with our customers in resort and the local authorities."

The tour operator said it continues to offer holidays to the Anastasia Beach and Cyprus, "where customers are continuing to enjoy their holidays with us".

Attempts to cover up some kind of crime against children at a holiday resort? Hmmm, reminds me of something.

Oh, and the very fact that Thomas Cook have moved all those people to another hotel rather speaks for itself.

Cyprus hotel child abduction: Dad feared Madeleine McCann-type snatch after daughter found in kidnapper's arms

22:30, 18 JUNE 2015
BY JEREMY ARMSTRONG , STEVE ROBSON

Daniel Mann said Lillie, two, was taken from a hotel at the centre of a recent child abduction bid but was found in her kidnapper’s arms

A dad told how his daughter was snatched on holiday and he feared she would vanish like Madeleine McCann.

Daniel Mann said Lillie, two, was taken from a Cyprus hotel at the centre of a recent child abduction bid but was found in her kidnapper’s arms.

He added: “It was awful. My daughter was about 10 yards from me at the pool and in the time it took me to turn around and say, ‘It is time to go I will go and get the bairn,’ she had gone.”

Daniel, 28, told how he and his partner Kay Baldasara launched a frantic search for the toddler after she vanished from the pool at the Thomas Cook Anastasia Beach Complex – where police are investigating claims paedophiles tried to snatch the children of holidaymakers last week.

It was then the couple feared their only child may have suffered the same fate as Madeleine, who vanished from an Algarve resort in 2007, aged three.

PE teacher Daniel added: “We were frantically searching for about 40 minutes. I could feel my stomach churning the longer it went on.

“There were people joining to help all the time. One or two mentioned Madeleine McCann, you can imagine how that made me feel.”

As the couple got more and more distraught, Kay, also 28, spotted a woman carrying Lillie under arms around 400 yards from the hotel.

Daniel, of Horden, Co Durham, said: “We found her in the arms of an Eastern European woman who was walking towards a car park.

"My partner saw her, she thought she was carrying a bag of potatoes, then she realised it was our child. She ran after her, screaming.”

Kay added: “Lillie was hysterical.”

The woman claimed she found the toddler alone and was taking her to the hotel.

But Kay said: “By the time I checked over Lillie, she had gone.”

The couple did not believe her and asked staff to call police. But Daniel said: “The manager said to us, ‘You’ve got her back, that’s it’.”

The pair reported the kidnap attempt to Durham Police when they returned home after the holiday last August.

The case was referred to Operation Grange, the unit leading the search for Madeleine. It was also shared with detectives in Cyprus. There have been no arrests.

Daniel told how the latest kidnap bids at the hotel brought their own horror flooding back.

He said: “When I read about it I got upset.”

Thomas Cook said tonight: “We were concerned to hear about the incident reported by Mr Mann.

"Following conversations with him we contacted the hotel to ensure security at the property was increased.”

Gang tries to snatch British kids from Cyprus hotel Empty Cyprus denies 'chid snatch'

Post  Max Fri Jun 19, 2015 2:42 am

Cyprus denies 'child snatch' claims

21:46Thursday 18 June 2015

Authorities in Cyprus have denied there was a child abduction attempt at a hotel popular with British holidaymakers.

An investigation was launched following an incident on June 16 at the Anastasia Beach complex in Protaras
.

Dundee holidaymaker Greg Letford, 28, told the Daily Record newspaper that a couple had led two young children towards a waiting car and another person had a third child "ready to go".

However local police said a 19-year-old man had been questioned and released after tourists reported seeing a man filming young children on his mobile phone.

Nothing untoward was found on his phone or during a search of his home, the force said, and officers returned to the hotel to speak to tourists who were concerned that the man was part of a child abduction gang.

Police said they did not find any evidence of this and that the travel company and the UK High Commission office in Cyprus "had expressed their full satisfaction" with their handling of the incident.

The Foreign Office confirmed it had provided assistance to a British family following a "concerning incident", while tour operator Thomas Cook said the matter was being taken "incredibly seriously".

Police deputy spokeswoman Nikoletta Tyrimou told the Cyprus Mail: "We questioned the suspect, went through his phone and also searched his home.

"Nothing we found suggests that he is part of a child-abducting gang or that he was stalking children.

"He has since been released while police take statements from all those present at the scene."

Hotel operator Tsokkos said the child abduction claims were "completely unjustifiable".

The Anastasia Beach complex, on the eastern tip of Cyprus, is described on the Thomas Cook website as being a "perfect family choice".

A spokeswoman said: "The safety and welfare of our customers is always our first priority and, upon hearing about the incident, we immediately deployed our experienced resort team to the property to provide those customers in residence with individual support.

"Customers who did not wish to stay at the property were immediately moved to alternative hotels of a similar or higher standard.

"While incidents of this nature are extremely rare, we would like to reassure all customers that this is being taken incredibly seriously and we are continuing to work closely with the local authorities and the hotel as the investigation continues.

"Any customers with concerns about future holidays at this hotel are asked to contact us directly so that we can deal with them personally and directly."

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: "Our consular officers provided advice and support to the family involved following this concerning incident. This is now a matter for the local police who are investigating."

Tsokkos said in a statement: "According to the police investigation, the claims of child abduction are completely unjustifiable and invalid as nothing was found to suggest that the person involved intended to carry out such an act.

"The 19-year-old man involved is not an employee of the hotel and is not a known person to either the management or staff.

"The safety and welfare of our guests is always our first priority and upon becoming aware of the incident, we immediately increased the security personnel at the hotel as well as deployed more management members throughout the property to offer all in-house guests assistance and any other support needed."

Thomas Cook said it had assisted 16 customer bookings who requested a move to another hotel and two families w ho travelled back to the UK early.

The spokeswoman said: "Although there are conflicting reports as to what exactly occurred at the property, we would like to reassure all customers that we take all allegations incredibly seriously and we are continuing to work closely with our customers in resort and the local authorities."

The tour operator said it continues to offer holidays to the Anastasia Beach and Cyprus, "where customers are continuing to enjoy their holidays with us".

Child smuggling gang dressed as waiters try to SNATCH British children from Cyprus hotel

A GANG of suspected child smugglers dressed up as waiters and tried to abduct three British children from a popular holiday resort.

By NICK GUTTERIDGE
PUBLISHED: 10:13, Thu, Jun 18, 2015 | UPDATED: 11:22, Thu, Jun 18, 2015

The group were caught luring the youngsters - who are all believed to be under 10 and British - towards their car outside the busy hotel on the Mediterranean isle of Cyprus.

Shocked holidaymakers described how they had seen a gang of around 10 men and women filming the children playing in the pool before the audacious kidnap attempt.

Some of the men had even obtained waiters' uniforms so that they could wander freely around the grounds without arousing suspicion.

Two of the gang were arrested on the spot and more than 60 British and Irish families have been removed from the resort amid fears the others may return looking for more victims.

A holidaymaker, who was part of a wedding party from Dundee, said: “We had seen these people around the hotel all week. They’d been in the pool and interacting with some of the children.

“Some of them were wearing staff outfits so they could blend in more easily. It was really scary.”

Dad-of-two Greg Letford, who was also with the party, said staff at the hotel believe the gang may have been Romanian child-smugglers.

The 28-year-old told the Daily Record: “This Romanian couple were leading the two young children towards a waiting car, another person had a third child up against a wall ready to go, too.

“Someone spotted what they were up to and stopped them. If he hadn’t been there those kids would have gone.

“One of the men got away and we heard the getaway car crashed a short distance away too.

“When the police turned up, they took the man and woman into an office in the hotel and a crowd built up in the foyer – there must have been about 60 or 70 really angry people. It was chaos.

“The police got them into a van through a window for their protection. One of the hotel staff later told us they were Romanian and that one of them used to work at the hotel.”

The drama unfolded at the Anastasia Beach Complex, near Protaras, on Tuesday night.

After they were spotted, the alleged abductors were grabbed, frogmarched to the hotel office and handed over to detectives.

Police posted guards at the hotel following the scare, but alarmed holidaymakers said they had still set up their own security patrols to protect their children.

A member of the wedding group said: “What should have been a fantastic wedding has turned into a bit of a nightmare.

“Just thinking of what might have happened to those children makes your stomach flip. After it happened, we started patrolling around the accommodation to keep an eye out for them again. We just couldn’t take chances.”

The popular family resort, in eastern Cyprus, features an elaborate water park and is run by Thomas Cook.

Holidaymakers praised the swift response of the travel company, which immediately arranged return flights to the UK for the families directly attempted by the abductions.

The firm also organised for scared customers worried about their children's safety to move to a 5* hotel in Paphos where they would feel safer.

A Thomas Cook spokeswoman said the company were taking the incident extremely seriously.

She said: “Thomas Cook have requested an increased and immediate security presence at the hotel.

“The safety and welfare of our customers is always our first priority and, upon hearing about the incident, we immediately deployed our experienced resort team to the property to provide those customers in residence with individual support.

Yes, because yet another vast, international conspiracy is sooooo much more likely than a bunch of opportunist scumbags threatening kids.

Is EVERYONE in the McCann-hating Amaral supporting squad completely round the bend and devoid of any grasp on reality?

No, no need to answer....

Can someone explain to me why the McCann-haters claim to care ever so much for 'kiddies' - won't someone think of the children?

But are so blinkered, blind and generally in love with Gonzo that they will not accept that yes, predators do prey on strangers' children, and yes, holiday resorts DO try to cover these things up?

Remember how they denied, for years, that there had been attacks on children in PDL? Only for it to be confirmed that yes, there had been - BY THE PJ THEMSELVES.

FFS, it's only a few months since Thomas Cook tried to wriggle out of responsibility for the appalling deaths of two children on one of their holidays.

But no, to a hater, everyone's lying, as part of some vast conspiracy, except those that have a financial interest in lying.

Dangerous, blind morons, the lot of them.

Shock: Lillie was found 400 yards away outside hotel

Two separate incidents at the same hotel - and the McCann-haters insist it's all a vast conspiracy ( yernuts ) and everyone's lying except those who gain financially for lying.

After their years of denial that children had been attacked in PDL before Madeleine was abducted, they really cannot complain if people regard them as the child predator's best friends.

It's truly amazing that they are now declaring the Cyprus government is a font of all truth and justice. Do they ever watch any TV except Jeremy Kyle? Ever read anything except hate sites?

The government of Cyprus would put the Mafia to shame. Does the word 'haircut' not ring any bells with the haters? No, of course not, they have NO interest in anything except pitchforking the McCanns and worshipping dirty, criminal ex-cops.
