'Arrest Made' After Twitter Rape Threats
Police make an arrest after rape threats were made on Twitter, according to the feminist campaigner targeted by the abuse.

A feminist who received a barrage of abuse on Twitter after heading a campaign for a woman to appear on British banknotes has called on the social networking site and police to take action.

Caroline Criado-Perez received hostile posts, including threats to rape and kill her, nearly every minute in the 48 hours after she attended the Bank of England's unveiling of the new £10 note, with Jane Austen's image on, on Wednesday.

Ms Criado-Perez told Sky News: "It was really really disturbing to find that something as small as asking for one woman on a banknote could result in such a barrage of threats of sexual violence.

" … It's just not acceptable and more than that it's actually a crime and Twitter needs to take it seriously and the police need to take it seriously."

Her comments come as an online petition in support of her, calling on Twitter to introduce a button to allow speedy reporting of abuse, has attracted more than 25,000 signatures.

She has also received support from MPs and celebrities.

Ms Criado-Perez added: "This is something that happens specifically to women and it’s to make them shut up because there is a certain type of man who doesn't like women speaking and they don’t like women speaking back to them.

Twitter is under increasing pressure to take a tougher stance
"I wasn't going to give them what they wanted so I decided to start being very very public about the abuse I was receiving even though it was really unpleasant and obviously it's invited more abuse to a certain extent, but it's also invited so much support which has been absolutely incredible."

A spokesperson for Twitter said: "The ability to report individual tweets for abuse is currently available on Twitter for iPhone and we plan to bring this functionality to other platforms, including Android and the web.

"We don't comment on individual accounts. However, we have rules which people agree to abide by when they sign up to Twitter.

"We will suspend accounts that, once reported to us, are found to be in breach of our rules.

"We encourage users to report an account for violation of the Twitter rules by using one of our report forms: https://support.twitter.com/forms."

In the case of Criado-Perez, however, we’re seeing an attempt to terrorise and intimidate. Just expecting her to block her tormentors as they fire each menacing salvo is not acceptable. Twitter needs a button to allow rape and death threats to be registered and dealt with.

Sadly, we see such obscenities daily from the McCann-haters.

Man arrested over abuse sent to feminist campaigner

A man has been arrested in connection with a barrage of hostile tweets sent to feminist campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez, which included threats to rape and kill her.

By Louise Gray8:05PM BST 28 Jul 2013

Caroline Criado-Perez, a writer, received threats via social networking sites after winning a campaign to have a woman printed on bank notes.
Police confirmed they had arrested a 21-year-old man on Sunday night, on suspicion of harassment.
Posting on Twitter, Ms Criado-Perez wrote: “*BREAKING* just heard from police that an arrest has been made. That's all I have at present.”
A spokesman from Scotland Yard confirmed the arrest and said: "A 21-year-old man has today been arrested in the Manchester area on suspicion of harassment offences.
"The arrest is in connection with an allegation of malicious communications received by officers on Thursday."

Ms Criado-Perez said many of the threats from so-called anonymous “trolls” were violent and published what they thought was her home address, but neither Twitter or the police took action when she alerted them.
Speaking to the Telegraph’s Women’s Editor Emma Barnett on LBC Radio, she said that the police had finally agreed to investigate under hate crime laws and she was giving a formal statement.
But the campaigner voiced fear for other victims without a high profile to get help.
“Imagine all the women dealing with this everyday without any support. The amount of pressure needed for the police and Twitter to deal with it was shocking.
“We have legislation in place, these are crimes, they should be dealt with.”
Ms Criado-Perez campaigned for a woman to be put on one of the stirling bank notes after Elizabeth Fry was replaced by Winston Churchill on the five pound note.
Eventually, the Bank of England announced that Jane Austen would be put on the ten pound note from 2017.
But her success was greeted by a deluge of abuse last week.
She said she was getting an abusive message “every minute” making it impossible to report the abuse via an online form, the only complaint service Twitter currently provides.
She said Twitter should introduce a “report button” so that trolls can be immediately identified and dealt with.
A petition had had gained almost 40,000 signatures supporting the idea by Sunday afternoon.
A number of celebrities and politicians have suggested a boycott of Twitter unless action is taken.
But so far Twitter has failed to act and no action has been taken by police.
Ms Criado-Perez said the issue was preventing women speaking out in public spaces because of fear of abuse.
She pointed out that blocking abusers does not work, as they can merely set up another account and continue “trolling”.
“These men want me off Twitter to silence me and I am not going to give them the satisfaction,” she added.
Yvette Cooper, the shadow home secretary, said Twitter must take action.
She has written to Tony Wang, the general manager of Twitter in the UK, asking why there was such a dealy in responding to the “disgraceful, appalling and unacceptable” comments made about Ms Criado Perez on the site.
She wrote: “Despite the scale and seriousness of these threats, the official response from Twitter continues to be extremely weak - simply directing Caroline away from Twitter towards the police, and, belatedly, directing users to abuse reporting forms on Twitter.
“Of course it is right to report such abuse to the police, and it is very important that they investigate and pursue this case.
“But social media platforms also have a responsibility for the platform they give users. And in particular they have a responsibility not to tolerate this kind of abuse, rape threats and potentially criminal behaviour.”
She added: “The response by Twitter has clearly been inadequate and fails not only Caroline, but many more women and girls who have faced similar abuse on your social network.
“I urge you to go further and ensure that Twitter carries out a full review of all its policies on abusive behaviour, threats and crimes, including more help for Twitter users who experience abuse, a clear complaints process and clear action from Twitter to tackle this kind of persecution.”
Mr Wang said that the company takes online abuse seriously.
He tweeted: “We encourage users to report an account for violation of the Twitter rules by using one of our report form
“Also, we’re testing ways to simplify reporting, e.g. within a Tweet by using the “Report Tweet” button in our iPhone app and on mobile web.
“We will suspend accounts that, once reported to us, are found to be in breach of our rules.”
But some writers are against a report button.
Brooke Magnanti, the feminst author of Belle de Jour, fears it will drive abuse underground, rather than allowing the digital community to engage with extreme points of view.

Twitter: Police Investigate MP Rape Threats
An MP faced a vicious attack after speaking out in support of a feminist campaigner, who received death threats on Twitter.

Detectives are investigating a string of sexually explicit and violent tweets sent to an MP as TV classics expert Mary Beard outed an internet troll on Twitter.

Stella Creasy faced a vicious online attack after she spoke out in support of feminist campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez, who received threats to rape and kill her on Twitter following her successful campaign to put Jane Austen's picture on the new £10 note.

The Walthamstow MP retweeted some of the sinister messages to her 30,000 followers as she warned the "morons" behind the abuse would face justice.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: "Officers in Waltham Forest received an allegation of malicious communications from an MP. The allegation relates to comments made on Twitter and is currently under consideration."

Ms Creasy has called for Twitter to take faster and stronger action against online thugs, and criticised the microblogging site's security policies.

She told Sky News: "This is illegal activity. It would be illegal if someone said this to you in the street, it would be a form of harassment, and it's legal online.

"And what we're looking for is companies like Twitter not simply to ask people to report stuff so they can think about it, but to actually work with the police so they can identify the individuals committing this crime."

She added: "It's not the technology that makes them idiots, it's because they are idiots. And actually Twitter has a role to play in helping us end the violence against women that this represents."

Tory MP Claire Perry, who has been advising David Cameron on measures to tackle the spread of extreme pornography and child abuse on the internet, has also received a torrent of abuse from Twitter users.

The Devizes MP tweeted: "I am tempted to shut down my Twitter account given the trolling going on incl. to me - but that would be giving in."

Meanwhile, Ms Beard silenced an internet troll after naming and shaming him on Twitter.

The professor of classics at the University of Cambridge retweeted the "highly offensive" post from Oliver Rawlings, who has 243 followers on the social networking site.

In his tweet, Mr Rawlings called Ms Beard a "filthy old slut" and made a sexual comment.

Fellow users responded by condemning Mr Rawlings and within minutes he responded: "I sincerely apologise for my trolling. I was wrong and very rude. Hope this can be forgotten and forgiven."

Ms Beard said exposing trolls was the best tactic.

Talking to a fellow user about her decision to highlight the abuse, she tweeted: "It is a tough call. I have increasingly opted for name and shame. It has to be outed. And maybe his friends can say 'stop'."

Ms Perez described how the online abuse had left her feeling "under siege" and terrified in her own home.

She criticised the response from Twitter and claimed to have been blocked by Mark Luckie, one of its senior managers, after he was made aware of her ordeal.

Police have arrested a 21-year-old man in Manchester in connection with the abuse.

Twitter said it plans to include a button for reporting abuse within every tweet, which is already available on its iPhone app.

John Whittingdale, chairman of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee has told Sky News Twitter bosses may be called as witnesses in an inquiry to be held in the autumn on "harmful content on the internet".

========

Let's hope the filth from the McCann-haters on #mccann, and on hoho's FB group, is going to be brought to the attention of the inquiry.
