Thank you, Pedro. I realised we don't have a thread for general news from Portugal, so I've merged these stories to start one.

A Spanish tourist in his 70s suffered extensive injuries on Wendesday when he slipped and fell eight metres from cliffs on the Senhora da Rocha beach in Lagoa, Algarve. That same day another tourist broke a foot while walking down stairs to a neighbouring beach.

Poor man - that's a long way to fall.

The artist’s lawyer Fernando Cabrita described the case as “exemplary” and said the outcome is proof that artists can have freedom of expression even if it goes against national values.
The case itself has sparked outrage among observers, with one supporter saying he was “astonished and shocked” that “a modern liberal democracy in the 21st century still has an archaic law like this”, adding: “Whatever happened to artistic and political freedoms? Anyway, surely such a prosecution is not allowed in the context of EU human rights

I'm astounded that such a charge was ever brought - the artwork seems pretty mild, in comparison to UK satire.

GNR police undertook two operations in a bid to crackdown on crime across the country with the majority of arrests being made for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

The first operation, which took place in the districts of Faro, Lisbon, Oporto, Braga, Bragança and Setúbal, saw a total of 45 arrests with 21 being for driving under the influence of alcohol.
A second operation was executed across mainland Portugal, the Azores and Madeira and led to a total of 185 arrests, 125 of which were for drink driving.
There were also nine arrests in total for drug trafficking and a notable amount of illegal drugs were seized during the operation which saw 2,226 cars stopped and 78 doses of cocaine, 469.75 doses of hashish and 16.7 grams of MDMA seized by police.

Astounding that anyone should still think drink driving is acceptable.

Powerful people are still able to manipulate the justice system in Portugal. This is the view of securities regulator Carlos Tavares who gave evidence to the parliamentary commission investigating the ongoing scandal within stricken Grupo Espírito Santo (GES).

“Let me let off a bit of steam,” Tavares is quoted as saying, in answer to a question from a Left Bloc deputy, querying whether there was “a law for the rich and a law for the poor” in Portugal.

“Sometimes I wonder this myself. Our law allows those who have economic power to defer the application of law,” he said. “But for CMVM (the regulator headed by Tavares) everyone is equal and we can give proof of this.”

Reported in Diário de Notícias, Tavares then cited examples of irregularities uncovered in BCP and GES.

“If we had rapid justice, half the problems of the country would be resolved,” he added.

A Madeira-bound Monarch flight out of Birmingham was forced to make an emergency landing at Faro Airport late yesterday afternoon due to problems with the plane’s hydraulics system.

Around 320 people are believed to have been affected by the emergency landing, most of whom were British holidaymakers.

According to regional online newspaper Sulfinformação the passengers had to spend the night at a hotel in Faro.

The disruption also affected passengers waiting in Madeira to fly back to Birmingham.

Monarch airlines and airport authorities have not yet commented on the ordeal, although the airline was expected to provide updates on the work to the plane’s hydraulics.

The flight had been scheduled to land at 6.10pm in Madeira, according to news reports, when the crew noticed that something was wrong and decided to play it safe by diverting to Faro.

The plane circled the airport in order to use up fuel and reduce the risk of any accidents during the landing.

Although the airport is said to have entered “yellow alert”, the emergency went smoothly, with an easy landing.

Re: General news from Portugal

Post  bb1 on Tue Jul 29, 2014 12:25 pm

As expected, the draft law to make the abuse and abandonment of animals a crime was approved today (July 25) in Parliament. But a surprise clause has shocked animal rights associations and effectively turned the law into a joke.

An amendment pushed through by the PSD-CDS majority sees exemption for bullfighting, the circus and agricultural and fishing industries.

“This is is very cruel and very wrong,” Vasco Reis, one of the founders of Aljezur animal association AEZA, told the Resident.

“It just goes to show how far Portugal still has to go to reach other country’s animal rights standards,” he told us. “Animals feel pain, fear and stress, just the same as we do, and it’s not right to let these industries take advantage of them,” said Reis, who is also a trained veterinary.

The law was approved with the favourable votes from PSD, PS, CDS-PP, BE and PEV. The communist PCP party abstained, saying it would be better to implement a bigger and more “dissuasive” fine system instead of turning offenders into criminals - and two members of CDS-PP voted against the law.

In a nutshell, the new legislation introduces heavy penalties, including prison and daily fines (as yet undisclosed) for those found to have mistreated or abandoned a pet animal, while also granting more rights to animal protection associations.

Algarve MP for the PSD, Cristóvão Norte, helped draft the bill and has said that he hopes the law will come into effect as soon as September this year.

I am appalled that Portugal has reintroduced bullfighting, Pedro, I can't imagine what kind of sadist goes to such things.

They don't see it as we do, for them it is a cultural thing. After all, cock-fighting (banned in 1835) and dog-fighting (banned in 1830) were accepted as sports in the UK and were part of the culture and even today they still take place even with the heavy fines and jail sentences that are used to stop them. I personally would never even consider going to see animals fight, I don't even like boxing. LL

Following a visit to southern Portugal in July 2013, where similar photographs were taken of him and his wife Samantha at an Aljezur fish market, the Prime Minister is seen striking a familiar pose as he surveys the fresh seafood on offer.

I'd say, You can keep him! Pedro, but you've got enough idiot politicians of your own.

Re: General news from Portugal

Speaking to Lusa News Agency about the discovery, researcher Fernando Escaso said: “In Portugal’s history it is one of the smallest known and probably one of the smallest of all herbivore dinosaurs because it belongs to the smallest group on a global scale and was likely not yet an adult. If it were an adult it would be bigger.”
A paper on the find written by Fernando Escaso with colleagues from the Torres Vedras Natural History Society, Lisbon University, and the National Distance Learning University in Madrid (Spain), has been published in the Jounal of Vertebrate Palaeontology.
After the initial discovery in 1999 in Lourinhã, and travelling to the US to study the fossils of similar dinosaurs, the team was able to conclude there were differences between them and they had in fact uncovered a new genre of dinosaur.
This new specimen, nicknamed ‘Eousdryosaurus nanohallucis’, has been categorised a herbivorous ornithopod and “would have walked in a very agile and speedy fashion, on two legs, and would have had short arms, a long tail and measured around one metre and sixty centimetres in height.”
The scientists believe it was a young animal, which when fully grown would have measured between two and two-and-a-half metres, and lived 152 million years ago in the Upper Jurassic Period.
Its fossil was originally discovered by amateur José Joaquim dos Santos, a carpenter by profession, on the Porto das Barcas beach (Lourinhã).
At the time of his discovery Santos had dedicated 27 years of his life to finding fossils in cliffs and collecting them at home.
His collection was purchased by Torres Vedras Council in 1999 and gifted to the local Natural History Society to be studied.

Thanks, Pedro, that's interesting. That there were small ones rather gives weight to the theory that dinosaurs evolved into birds....which sounds silly when you think of the huge ones, but not when there was one about the size of an ostrich.
