Witnesses describe seeing a man staring at the McCann family's holiday apartment, as police search for a mystery predator.

A bogus charity collector was suspected of planning to abduct a young British girl hours before Madeleine McCann vanished, a new book reveals.

The intruder fled when he was caught in a villa close to the apartment from where three-year-old Madeleine disappeared in Praia da Luz, Portugal in 2007.

Author Anthony Summers told Sky News that a British mother answered her door to a stranger asking for donations to an orphanage.

The incident in the Praia da Luz resort is recounted in Looking For Madeleine, published next week, by Mr Summers and his co-author Robbyn Swan.

The authors spent two years studying Portuguese police files and British documents for what they claim is the first objective book on the Madeleine case. They did not interview Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry McCann.

The book also reveals how another intruder got into the bed of a young girl in the nearby resort of Carvoeiro three years earlier.

The man fled after the girl and her sister woke up and asked if he was their daddy or uncle, said Ms Swan.

She said: "What they noticed about this man was that he was wearing what seemed to be a surgical mask and he had wound laundry around his feet, seemingly to keep from making prints or leaving marks.

"He disappeared without interfering with the two girls."

A mystery sexual predator and three burglary suspects are the focus of the current Scotland Yard investigation.

The authors claim that the McCanns' holiday apartment, no 5a at the Ocean Club complex, was being watched in the days leading up to Madeleine's disappearance

Ms Swan said: "Two separate witnesses apparently saw a man, whom both described as very ugly or with a spotty or pimply face, staring fixedly at apartment 5a. They both described him being in the same position in the street.

"That's combined with the fact that on the very day Madeleine disappeared, a lady visiting the apartment upstairs saw from her balcony a man behaving very oddly in the lane between the apartments and the pool.

"The man was going out of an adjacent gate, closing the gate repeatedly to see if it was creaky. He seemed to be looking around and generally acting very peculiarly before leaving."

Madeleine was nearly four when she vanished. She was sleeping in a room with her younger brother and sister in the apartment while her parents were dining with friends in the complex's poolside tapas bar nearby.

The McCanns said they had left the sliding patio door unlocked, while checking on the children every 30 minutes.

The authors say that Mrs McCann has said she was told by the then British consul Bill Henderson that before Madeleine vanished he was aware of a spate of child sex assaults along the Algarve coast and had discussed it with holiday companies.

Mr Summers said: "Had there been a warning note in the apartment, do we think the McCanns would have left the patio door unlocked on the night they went to the other side of the pool to have dinner away from their children?

"One would be tempted to think they would make sure everything was firmly locked up."

The McCanns' tour operators Mark Warner Ltd said its policy was not to comment. The Foreign Office told the authors it had no information to give them.

The funny thing is that those who have actually bothered to read the full content of the article in today's Sun on Sunday (which I have posted in full in another thread) will see that Summers and Swan were fully aware that this is how the numpties and haters were likely to behave.

Indeed a crucial phrase towards the end of the article states:

“People who vilified them should set aside their prejudices and read the evidence before making up their minds.”

Watch this space for further, much more specific commentary from Summers and Swan about the haters who have been harassing the McCanns.


I haven't read any of it yet; I've pre-ordered the book - and paid for it myself, unlike Bennett - but I do hope that Summers and Swan go to town on the haters.

The haters' reactions so far have been totally predictable. Ranting, bile-spewing, demands, declarations that anyone that doesn't approve of their hate campaign is IN IT - all the usual bigotry and ignorance.

working for BSKYB and answering directly to MURDOCH is one HENRY STAUNTON who just so happens to be the chief executive of WH SMITH who in 2005 acquired HEADLINE, the publishing company of the SUMMERS & SWANN epic " LOOKING FOR MADELIENE"" ( yep i think you know where this is going by now ).
SUMMERS & SWANN for many years had their books, and still retain close links , published by RANDOM HOUSE who own the subsiduary BANTAM PRESS and yes you have guessed it ,they are the publishers responsible for the awful diatribe MADELIENE , OUR DAUGHTER'S DISAPPEARANCE AND THE CONTINUING SEARCH FOR HER.

The most damaging turn in the investigation was the Portuguese police decision to name the couple as suspects after 'cadaver' and 'blood' dogs had apparently alerted them in the McCanns apartment.

But the authors write 'The discoveries the British sniffer dogs had apparently made had utterly changed the direction of the investigation. Had the dogs not been brought in, it is fair to say there would have been no Portuguese police decision to declare Madeleine's parents suspects'.

'A careful reading of the case files however, indicates that the decision that was made was premature and grew out of a perhaps understandable Portuguese misinterpretation of a poorly worded but key forensic finding in a preliminary email from the British Forensic Science Service.

'The British liaison officer who passed the email on to the Policia judiciaria appears to have warned them to wait for the arrival of the formal laboratory report.

'The PJ team, however, seem not only to have ignored the liaison officer's caution but the caveat in the report of the British specialist who had handled the dogs in Praia da Luz. 'No evidential or intelligence reliability' could be made as the result of a dog having 'alerted', handler Martin Grime had written. 'Unless it can be confirmed with corroborating evidence'.

'Corroborating forensic evidence that Madeleine had died in the McCanns' apartment, had bled there - indeed had even been there - never would materialise.

'Two veteran dog handlers told the authors that without forensic evidence, no reliance can be put on the alert indications the dogs made in the Madeleine case'.

Why are they all crying and whining? People have explained that to them, repeatedly, for YEARS. It's no-one's fault but their own that they won't listen to reality.

I have to say this is starting to make me quite depressed. The only possible small positive from this is that there must be a reason Kate and Gerry McCann feel they need to write this book now, perhaps they fear a court case and sentence are in the horizon.

It actually thinks the McCanns have written this book.....

REPLY: I was comparing a book costing £10 that avoids the truth with a film that is laden with facts and is free to watch. I added that, in favour of Hall's film, he had obviously undertaken not only a lot of research but had also taken the trouble to visit and film in Praia da Luz.

Bennett still pushing his conspiraloon chum Hall's tedious nonsense.
