Re: Political, financial turmoil in Greece
The UK government is flat-out lying about inflation in the UK, Sabot, as anyone that pays grocery bills will testify.

Re: Political, financial turmoil in Greece
I read somewhere or other that Ms Merkel is having a meltdown because she wanted her legacy to be all of us in one big European family, merrily waving those starry flags and singing Ode to Joy. While those clever bureaucrats in Brussels and Berlin told us what was best for us, of course!
All of which has, very predictably, gone t*ts up and just about the only thing assorted European nations are united in now is that old favourite, blaming Germany.
It would help, IMO, if she and her chums would just shut up, let Hollande do the talking - doesn't matter if he is an idiot, as long as he makes soothing noises. It really isn't a good idea for German Chancellors to tell other European nations what to do, tends to bring back unhappy memories.

Doesn't she have any good friends to tell her? Like Italy and Spain?

German Chancellor Angela Merkel showed the strain ahead of her meeting with Francois Hollande yesterday

Someone needs to tell her that the euro IS blowing apart, and could well take her whole EU fantasy with it.
And she can hardly whine if Greece looks east for help. If the EU leaders hadn't acted like a bunch of sheep over sanctions, then Greece would still be trading with Russia.
I didn't notice the German Chancellor offering to help the Greek farmers ruined by her impersonation of Obama's poodle.

Greece Fallout: Italy & Spain Have Funded A Massive Backdoor Bailout Of French Banks
That's a good piece which makes some sense of the vast con-job that has been going on in Europe. And another reminder that this has little to do with Evil Greeks retiring early, and a great deal to do with dodgy banks that have been propped up with other people's money.

Re: Political, financial turmoil in Greece
Always remember that this business of public money - taxes - being used to keep rotten banks afloat, here and in the US, with dodgy loans, dodgy bonds, etc., and the whole mess constantly switching from one country to another is the complete opposite of what enterprise and capitalism are supposed to be.
Instead, it's some horrible stew of corruption, theft and cronyism from the 1%. It's plate-spinning for the benefit of the top dogs and WE are paying for all of it.
I hope Greece goes for a debt-free restart, and returns to the drachma, instead of prolonging the agony. I suspect it will take, oh, about a week for Greece to get aid from BRICS to stay afloat, and I have NO doubt that genuine trading deals will quickly be thrashed out with Russia, China, and the smaller nations.
In a couple of years outwith the Eurozone, Greece should be back on its feet, if a bit battered round the edges.

That's how I view it too, Bonny. Take a deep breath, dive into it and just get on with it (the drachma) knowing there are much brighter days around the corner.

Re: Political, financial turmoil in Greece
The other thing is, there's going to be a referendum in the UK in a year or so on whether or not the UK should stay in the EU. A great many people, me included, have changed their minds about that completely recently due to the bullying from Merkel and others.
Hello? We didn't vote to be ruled by Merkel, Juncker and co....

I do feel that, after reading his comments about Greece, Juncker is such an arrogant person. Who would want to be 'ruled' by him?

Re: Political, financial turmoil in Greece
He's absolutely awful, frankly. He seems to be some kind of honorary German - he's actually from that mighty world power, Luxemburg. Rumour has it that he's an alcoholic:
Senior Tory MPs backed their leader yesterday after a Mail on Sunday investigation uncovered a number of fresh reports about his drinking:
A senior diplomatic source told this newspaper: ‘Mr Juncker reportedly has cognac for breakfast’.
He was allegedly ‘blind drunk’, acted in a ‘vulgar’ way and repeatedly used the f-word in a meeting.
A respected German news journal claimed he had ‘drunk too much for years’ in an article headlined Achtung, Alkoholkontrolle! (Attention. Breathalyser Test!).
A top Dutch politician called him a ‘stubborn drinker’, forcing Mr Juncker to issue an angry denial.
An EU envoy told The Mail on Sunday: ‘Juncker and his boozing is the worst-kept secret in Brussels. He is politically and personally unsuited to run the EU.’
His supporters, however, claim he is the victim of a dirty-tricks campaign. One said: ‘He has a proven track record in taking tough decisions.’
Mr Juncker’s father was injured fighting for Hitler, something he cites as one of the reasons for his belief in the EU. He speaks fluent German, though his mother tongue is Luxembourgish. Both are official languages of his home country, as is French.
Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine said: ‘The more often Juncker’s name is dropped, the more the question arises whether he would be sturdy enough for the office of President. Long-time companions report of human weaknesses almost unknown to a broader public.’
His drinking was ‘an open secret’ in Luxembourg, it said, claiming Juncker had ‘drunk too much for years’.

He'll be on the sauce tonight for sure, as he's just been shouted down at the happy, united European parliament by a UKIP-er.

15:22 GMT:
“If Greece leaves, it will be the absolute end of the EU project. Therefore the EU won't allow that,” UKIP MEP Ray Finch told RT. “They will give in. And as soon as they do, the next morning they will hear a knock on the door from Spain, Portugal and Ireland."
[tape of shouting match]
“We feel that the euro is corrupt mechanism. Greece and Germany could never occupy the same financial zone without significant financial transfers,” he added

Kicked out? He's on the gravy train for life, like the rest of them. Only the little people get sacked for being drunk at work - not eurocrats.

Juncker is Luxembourgishe - and they are the heaviest European drinkers. LLlily wrote:Oh my!! No wonder he's so nasty, he's sozzled all the time. He should be kicked out.
The World’s Hardest-Drinking Countries
Luxembourg, where residents pound down 15.5 liters of alcohol in a year, on average, ranks first. Close behind are France (14.2 liters), Ireland (also 14.2 liters, a lot more of it from beer), Hungary (12 liters) and the Czech Republic (11.8 liters).
