This is the Sun's idea of 'political comment':

Dis-United Kingdom General Election campaign officially kicks off - Page 21 Juxtaposed

It is, frankly, disgusting.

I don't see the Union surviving, not because of anything the SNP do, or don't do, but because of this endless sexist, racist abuse from the Sun and Mail, and from a good few Westminster politicians.

They've taken their masks off, and NOTHING has changed in hundreds of years. I have little doubt they would deport us all in chains to plantations, if they still had any colonies.

Saturday 25 Apr 2015
Other parties struggle to top the SNP’s fervent supporters

182 2435 1 0

Once again the “Sturgeon effect” is in evidence at the top of Buchanan Street – Glasgow’s Oxford Street minus the tat.

Huge crowds gathered to hear the SNP leader launch the party’s policy in gender equality.

Picture this: no cops visible. No heckling. Not a situation any PR bod could do much to control. And all that in this plastic election? Shurley, indeed, shome mishtake?

What was also obvious was the large number of punters – beyond the usual set-dressing party activists – who had stopped and waited to hear here.

This I have not seen in the Scottish election battle on the streets on this scale, and wherever you stand with the SNP it is undeniably impressive.

Even a gender equality launch bang opposite Topman cannot stick to Teflon Nicola. Even the bizarre appearance of ultra-short-skirted cheerleaders cannot stick to Teflon Nicola.

Suddenly the ever-broken specs on the Donald Dewar statue overlooking this event look more poignant. What would he have made of the SNP political behemoth roaring across this land when all he wanted was to make independence go away with Devo-Min?

Grave? Spinning?

It took Ms Sturgeon more than 45 minutes to walk the 80 metres from Buchanan Steps to the interview position. The selfie-surge engulfed her as it might a film-star – except you get to doughnut/selfie/blether with Nicola Sturgeon.

Some news just in: there are unconfirmed reports from a forest outside Crieff that a voter has not yet got a selfie with Ms sturgeon. We’ll bring you more later in this blog if we get it…

It is something close to adoration and this cannot be faked – that is the point, and as a seasoned correspondent you report what you see and I have never seen this in a UK election.

Never.

A few hundred metres away and huge numbers of people are at a rally in support for her party – not organised by her party – which she won’t even visit, much less speak at.

The Tommy Sheridan bandwagon has pitched tent in George Square. For the “socialist firebrand” of tabloid shorthand, today’s “Hope over Fear” rally is going full throttle in the sunshine.

Saltires in the breeze, kilts, Kurds, socialists, toddlers with painted faces – all getting in the mood for Tommy S.

It seems largely ignored by the mainstream media in Scotland. But I am intrigued by it all.

Strive as I might I cannot see crowds of NHS workers filling Trafalgar Square for Labour – or the Countryside Alliance (remember them?) donning the Barbours for the Tories – or the something-or-other for the Lib Dems.

Couldn’t happen somehow, could it?

That is why George Square matters today. It speaks to a shift of mood in the country.

Incidentally, apart from the Westminster politicians, the leaders of the internet anti-SNP campaign seem to consist of only a couple of people.

One is that George Laird of Glasgow University loony, so beloved of the haters because he also hates Gerry McCann.

The other is some peculiar woman, going by the psuedonym of 'Effie Deans'. Her contributions have mainly consisted of announcing that there is no such country as Scotland, and inventing a bizarre Wheel which is supposed to tell people how to tactically vote. Naturally, this has caused much mockery and laughter, and she was last seen getting all teary cos her Wheel had been laughed at.

There is no wit, satire, songs, imagery, nothing - it's all at the same level as the Mail and Sun.

Poll reveals SNP are surging ahead of Labour with 48% of vote

Sunday 26 April 2015
Labour is failing to catch the SNP in Scotland and support for the nationalists is still on the rise, a new poll has suggested.

With Scotland set to play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the General Election, the study suggests Ed Miliband's party could suffer huge losses north of the border on May 7.

Just over a quarter (27%) of Scots say they will be voting for Labour in the election, according to the Panelbase poll for the Sunday Times, a drop of two points from earlier this month.

In contrast, support for the SNP is up by three points to stand at 48%, the research found.

Meanwhile, 16% said they will be voting Conservative, 4% back the Liberal Democrats, 3% support Ukip and 2% will vote Green.

Labour won 41 seats in Scotland in the 2010 election but that could be slashed to just five after May 7, the research suggests.

At the same time, the SNP could see the number of MPs it has rise from six to 53. The Liberal Democrats could lose all but one of the 11 seats they won five years ago, while Scotland could have no Conservative MPs.

Panelbase questioned 1,044 voters in Scotland between April 20 and April 23, with SNP election campaign director Angus Robertson saying the results are a "further indication that the momentum in this campaign is firmly with the SNP".

Mr Robertson said support for the SNP has "risen even further in the last three weeks" while backing for the Labour Party, which is led in Scotland by Jim Murphy, has fallen.

SLab are in big trouble all round, with one of their biggest Trade Union backers refusing to speak to Murphy. From:

http://www.heraldscotland.com/politics/scottish-politics/bitter-feud-between-jim-murphy-and-unite-deepens.124290291

The Unite boss hit back last year during the Scottish Labour leadership contest by funding the campaign of Murphy's rival Neil Findlay.

McCluskey wrote that it was "essential" Murphy did not "seize the reins in Scotland" because of his status as an MP.

He continued: "Murphy is the candidate of the past and the candidate of division. He is an advocate - and, let me acknowledge, a powerful and committed advocate - for the policies which have led Scottish Labour to its present pass. His victory would be all the SNP's Christmases come at once."

McCluskey also cited Murphy's support for austerity, the Iraq war and tuition fees and claimed he would lead his party to defeat:

"At a time when Scottish Labour desperately needs to reconnect with its social democratic roots, he is the candidate of a reheated Blairism which in my view will be a sentence of political death for many Scottish Labour MPs, and for the prospect of a Labour victory next May."

Asked about the jibes, Murphy said at the time: "Shrug of the shoulders really ... I've had bigger and stronger people wanting to have a pop at me."

During his trip to Scotland, McCluskey spoke at an event for left-wing Labour candidate Katy Clark at the Saltcoats Labour Club on Thursday.

Twenty-four hours later, he was in Govan to help Iain Davidson hold on to his seat in Glasgow South West.

Neither Murphy nor McCluskey found time for each other during the union leader's campaigning spree.

Tommy Sheppard, the SNP candidate in Edinburgh East, said:

"Given Len McCluskey previously warned that electing Jim Murphy would be a 'political death sentence' for the Labour party, their poor relationship comes as little surprise. While Labour under Jim Murphy are wedded to the Tories' austerity agenda, the SNP are offering a progressive alternative to austerity that will deliver a fairer future for people in Scotland and across the UK."

It's gone beyond the stage when you can even be offended by it, Lily, it's so hysterical and deranged. And why they think they are helping their own case by repeatedly insulting 50% of the population of Scotland, I do not know.

I saw an interesting point somewhere, I forget where, relating to the fact that UKIP have been receiving rather similar treatment whenever they look as if they are getting anywhere in England...

It's not so much the SNP (or UKIP) they are scared of, because of politics. No, it's the thought of people that aren't in their Old Boys' Club getting sight of the REAL state of the UK economy, the dodgy tie-ups between governments and multi-nationals, the 'lost' files about perverts in Westminster, etc.

Speaking of which.....

Boris seems to have forgotten his loveable clown image and let his inner Bullington Boy escape for once. Cameron does that as well when he starts losing his temper.

The Tories seem to have made an absolute balls-up of this election campaign. I can't think of anything positive they have said, they have just slung abuse at other people.

And this weekend's Tory press has been so dire, it's made people laugh instead of making them scared of Ms Sturgeon and Milliband. The Daily Mail dragging out Andrew Lloyd Webber and casting Millipede as the Phantom of the Opera:

Dis-United Kingdom General Election campaign officially kicks off - Page 21 27FFD84D00000578-0-image-a-91_1430004306242

is just beyond parody. Time will tell, but I suspect the Tories have thrown the election away in England and Wales with this ridiculous, hysterical carry-on.

It's the worst I have EVER seen, Lily. I thought the Referendum was bad, but this? It's reached the point when it's an insult to the intelligence.

It is, IMO, also counter-productive, because any fule can see that the Tories aren't actually saying anything positive, they're just going for the opposition like rabid dogs. Which is also starting to suggest that they're running scared.
