Thousands of patients could unnecessarily be having surgery due to an inaccurate test, a heart doctor has warned.
And needless operations performed because of the exam may be costing the NHS £60 million a year, says Professor Gerry McCann.
The cardiologist, father of Madeleine who has been missing since May 2007, led a team of researchers from the University of Leicester.

Exercise testing has been used to assess people with the heart valve condition aortic stenosis (AS) since 2012.
It has been approved by the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology and the European Society of Cardiology.

Patients are asked to pedal a stationary bike to see if they require surgery to correct the problem, caused by a narrowing of the aortic valve opening.
But a study published in the European Heart Journal shows that the test only has a 60 per cent accuracy rate, suggesting many are sent for surgery prematurely.

The hate squad needn't bother reading the story - it's got words of more than one syllable in it, so they won't understand it.

It must really irk the hate squad that Professor McCann makes such a valuable contribution to society - unlike any of them.

Shocking, but not surprising, to see that the lowlife Gonzo worshippers just couldn't resist hatespamming even an academic piece, because it had the name 'McCann' on it.

I don't know who they think they're fooling; the media knows perfectly well it's the same bottom-feeders spamming comments all the time, pretending to be the 'British public'.

Mind you, it's an indication of hater stupidity that it still hasn't dawned on them that their hatespam achieves nothing, being about as valid and genuine as online polls.

They really should stick to idolising convicted perjurers, convicted torturers, conspiraloons, shock jocks and fading reality TV 'stars'.

At least if they did that, they would not have to try to sound intelligent.....

I am now beyond comprehension. I no longer know what to say. Perhaps I have given up.

It all grieves me, because there is no hope.

But not in my book.

A TEAM of top heart doctors led by Madeleine McCann’s dad has saved the life of a former England footballer after he suffered a cardiac arrest and “died” for seven minutes.

Leicester City legend and club ambassador Alan Birchenall, 71, has praised Gerry McCann and his colleagues, admitting: “I’m lucky. They saved my life.”

Speaking for the first time about his ordeal he said: “These people are unbelievable. I’ll be forever grateful to them.”

Professor McCann, as he is now titled, prides himself on having “established a national and growing international reputation as an expert in Cardiac MRI (magnetic reasoning imaging)” – or scanning.

His work has been winning critical acclaim as he and ex-GP wife Kate continue the global hunt to find daughter Maddie, who disappeared nearly 10 years ago from a Portuguese holiday apartment.

As the renowned cardiologist helps save patients’ lives, by cruel irony, he has no idea if his own child who vanished aged three is dead or alive.

Alan, nicknamed “The Birch,” was brought back to life after collapsing during a recent sports awards ceremony.

The former player was resuscitated on stage, where he had been making a presentation, by three medics who were among the crowd.

He was later treated at Leicester’s Glenfield Hospital where Maddie’s dad is a consultant cardiologist and a professor of cardiac imagery.

He was fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), a small device which treat patients with dangerously abnormal heart rhythms.

It is not known if Gerry, 48, who co-incidentally lives in the same village as The Birch in Rothley, Leicestershire, carried out the hour-long operation but he was on hand to advise.

Reliving the horror seven weeks ago, Alan recalled: “I just remember saying ‘I don’t feel well’ and then I felt my legs going and that was it.”

He told how the use of a defibrillator at the scene saved him.

He has previously helped raise funds for the use of the lifesaving equipment in Leicester schools and public places, along with Gerry’s heart specialist colleague Doug Skehan.

He said: “They had four attempts with it before my heart started again. I thought I was a goner!

“I owe my life to a defibrillator and the people at Glenfield Hospital. Every day is unreal because the Birch was gone – it changed my life.”

Dr Skehan added: “Alan’s had so many message of support. He is overjoyed by the response.”

Alan had been on official club duty at the ceremony, which was postponed.

Birchenall, who hails from London’s East End, spent the majority of his career in the 1960’s and 1970’s at Leicester.

He was awarded an MBE for his charity work in 2002 and seven years later was given the Freedom of Leicester.

Renowned doc Gerry McCann, whose research work on “better understanding of cardiovascular disease” has been published in one of the world’s leading cardiology journals.

The Sun newspaper launched a campaign calling for all school kids to be taught basic life-saving skills.

A host of stars led by tennis hero Andy Murray have joined the Love Heart in conjunction with the British Heart Foundation.


I sincerely hope PROFESSOR McCann was just on hand to advise - he isn't a surgeon.

Though Gonzo and co don't seem to know the difference.

Oh, good God! The hounders are googlestalking people who have dared to speak out about being helped by Professor McCann.

No, there really is no cure for them.

What exactly is the point of stalking people Prof. McCann has helped?

I think they're looking for Dark Forces, or vast, international plots, or something, Lily. Or they may just be barking mad obsessives, of course.
