LONDON MARATHON - 3 SCOTS FOR RIO

The British contingent at the Rio Olympics is likely to consist of a pair of Scottish brothers and a former Eritrean asylum seeker.

One of six Eritrean runners who sought asylum in Britain after competing at the 2008 World Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh, Tewelde has never before represented his adopted country but attacked from the outset in his debut marathon.

Fading in the latter stages, he eventually finished as the second British man to cross the line with Callum Hawkins overtaking him in the closing stages to smash his personal best en route to winning the battle of the Britons, crossing the line in two hours 10.52 seconds and leaving the world record holder Dennis Kimetto in his wake.

Tewelde also finished well within the Olympic qualifying time of two hours 14 minutes to snap up the second automatic spot on the plane to Rio, while Callum’s older brother Derek should be awarded the third discretionary spot after finishing as the third British man home in two hours 12.57 minutes."
