A police operation including a helicopter is under way in Heidingsfeld, a part of the city of Wurzburg in southern Germany.
Local media (in German) wrote that 21 people had been injured and a suspect appeared to have been shot.
The train line between Wurzburg-Heidingsfeld and Ochsenfurt is closed.
The German news agency DPA reported that the police said some of the victims' injuries were life-threatening.
It said police would not comment on reports that the suspect had been shot.

According to chatter on twitter, the thankfully-deceased attacker was a young Afghan. No official confirmation as to whether the Religion of Peace has struck yet again.

A man wielding an axe and a knife has been shot dead after injuring at least four people on a train outside the German city of Wuerzburg.
Three of the victims are in a serious condition, while another suffered minor injuries, police spokesman Fabien Hench told Sky News.
Among the injured were four members of a family from Hong Kong, according to the South China Morning Post.
They are a 62-year-old man, 58-year-old woman, their 27-year-old daughter and her 31-year-old boyfriend, the paper said.
Another 14 people are being treated for shock.
The attacker appears to have been a 17-year-old refugee from Afghanistan, Bavaria's interior minister Joachim Herrmann has told German media.
It is understood he made his way to Germany as an unaccompanied minor and had been living in the Bavarian town of Ochsenfurt.
The attack took place between Ochsenfurt and Wuerzburg-Heidingsfeld train stations in Bavaria at around 9.15pm local time.
The train was brought to a halt during the attack when one passenger pulled the emergency brake, according to Bavarian radio station BR.

The police spokesman declined to comment on media reports that the man attempted to attack police officers before he was shot.

A woman and her three daughters have been stabbed in a French resort for being ‘scantily dressed’.
An eight-year-old girl was left fighting for her life after the attack in the Garde-Colombe in the Hautes-Alpes region of Southern France.
The man is believed to have attacked the three girls outside the family’s apartment before entering the building and attacking the mother.
Jean-Marc Duprat, a deputy mayor for the town of Laragne-Monteglin in the Hautes-Alpes region said the suspect, who is not related to them, was upset they were wearing shorts and T-shirts.
He’s believed to have met the family earlier in the week and was staying next door.
The girls are believed to be aged eight, 12 and 14 while their mother is 46. The knifeman is alleged to have fled the scene by car before being arrested.
Amaury Navarranne from the regional council said: ‘The religious motive of the attack is in no doubt.
Meanwhile prosecutors said details were still ‘very vague’ and investigations were continuing.
The mayor of the town Edmond Francou said: ‘I was called around 9.45am to the holiday village next to the town hall because there had been a fight between two tenants in neighbouring apartments.
‘There was a crowd. That’s when I found a lady with three daughters who had stab injuries. They were lying on chairs.’
French media says that the man is of Moroccan descent and is 37 years old. It is also reported that he is known by police for previous crimes.
Mr Francou, said the girl had suffered a perforated lung and is being treated at Grenoble
Police said they had a 37-year-old man in custody.

Germany must expect attacks, possibly from 'lone wolves', says minister
Germany faces attacks by Islamist "lone wolves" similar to that carried out by a 17-year old refugee who attacked train passengers with an ax on Monday night, Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said on Wednesday.
"Like several EU countries, like the whole EU, Germany is also in the target area of international terrorism. Therefore, I have said for a long time, the situation is serious," de Maiziere told reporters.
He added that there was some indication that the train attacker was from Pakistan rather than Afghanistan, as previously thought.
Maybe if Merkel hadn't invited them in in the first place......?
