Madeleine McCann police may seek more Government cash for 'outstanding work'
By PRESS ASSOCIATION
PUBLISHED: 14:33, 24 August 2016 | UPDATED: 14:33, 24 August 2016
Detectives investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have "outstanding work" left to do on the inquiry and may apply for more Home Office funding.
In April, then-home secretary Theresa May granted the team £95,000 to keep the investigation going, with the cash expected to last until October.
On Wednesday, Scotland Yard said it would talk to the Home Office about funding.
A force spokesman told the Press Association: "Whilst there remains outstanding work on this case, the Metropolitan Police Service will remain in dialogue with the Home Office regarding the continuation of funding."
The British investigation, Operation Grange, was expected to be wound up after Scotland Yard boss Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said in May that British investigators had one remaining line of inquiry to follow and unless any new evidence came to light the probe would finish.
This came seven months after the investigation team was scaled back drastically to just four officers.
Earlier this month, the Sunday Mirror also reported that forensic investigations by the team had ended.
Madeleine vanished at the age of three while on holiday with her parents in Portugal in 2007 and, despite a high-profile international hunt, no trace has ever been found.
Hopes were high when the UK investigation into the little girl's disappearance was launched in 2011, with Scotland Yard detectives later highlighting a sex offender who had targeted British families with young children staying in villas in the same area where Madeleine was last seen.
Despite no obvious progress since then, earlier this year the head of Scotland Yard's murder squad, Detective Chief Superintendent Mick Duthie, remained optimistic.
He said: "There is ongoing work. There is always a possibility that we will find Madeleine and we hope that we will find her alive."

That should get the hate squad sharpening their talons and polishing their poison pens - the very last thing they want is for Madeleine to be found.
All the hate squad care about is their unsavoury idol Amoral.

It is, it is. It's an outrage. Everyone is entitled to Free Speach. Free Speech is another matter.

Frankly, they have more than enough platforms to spout their bile on - and happily, they can't make the rest of the world listen to them.

Madeleine McCann's parents dump a key member of their team in a bid to slash spiralling costs

Kate and Gerry axed PR expert Clarence Mitchell after nine years as they face uncertainty over the future of the £12million investigation
he parents of Madeleine McCann have dumped their spokesman in a bid to reduce spiralling costs.
Kate and Gerry axed PR expert Clarence Mitchell after nine years as they face uncertainty over the future of the £12million investigation – codenamed Operation Grange – into the disappearance of their daughter.
Kate and Gerry have just five more weeks of guaranteed Government funding towards the search.
The couple have vowed to use money from the official fund to continue the probe themselves, saying: “We will continue to do everything we can to help find our daughter. Our hope and resolve continues.”
Mr Mitchell was told his “services were no longer needed” in an email from heart doctor Gerry, who explained the family had to “cut costs”.
The Tory MP hopeful and former BBC journalist, who has helped keep Maddie’s disappearance in the global spotlight, was said to be “hurt” but respects their “more pressing agenda”.
The fund stands at £480,000, but the McCanns face a £434,000 libel bill to ex-Portuguese police chief Goncalo Amaral.
It is the first time since the three-year-old vanished from a holiday apartment in Portugal’s Praia da Luz, in May 2007, that the family have not had an official spokesman.
Mr Mitchell told the Mirror last night: “It makes perfect sense for Kate and Gerry to keep careful consideration over all their costs. I will continue to help them as circumstances require.”
Former GP Kate and Gerry, both 48, are bracing themselves for Scotland Yard shelving the investigation on October 5. Officers have said there is now only one lead “worth pursuing”.

The Mirror story is, IMO, much ado about nothing.
But it'll give the Amoral worshippers plenty to froth and foam about, and material for new conspiraloon 'theories'.

I will be surprised if either story is any different from what is already on this thread, rewritten and hyped up a bit.
