60 YEARS AGO THIS DAY ....

.... the Hungarians rose up against the Soviet oppressors of their proud but small nation.    They lost, many were gunned down , executed, sent to Soviet gulags in Siberia .... but, on November 9 1989, the Berlin wall was breached and the Soviet Union dissolved on December 26, 1991, as a result of declaration no. 142-Н of the Soviet of the Republics of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union.

The Soviets struck back with old-time Stalinist savagery. They poured reinforcements in, ringing Budapest. They encircled the Hungarian army in the provinces. At the end of the week, the Budapest radio burst out brokenly: “Russian MiG fighters are over Budapest. . . . The Russian infantry division is going toward the parliament. . . . Gyor is completely surrounded. . . . Pecs was attacked. . . . The Russians are using phosphorous bullets. . . . We shall die for Hungary and Europe. . . . Any news about help? Quickly, quickly, quickly . . .” Then Budapest fell.

RIP all those who died in the Uprising.     RIP Sandor Elès, born Jun 1936 in Tatabánya, 60 km from Budapest, orphaned during WW2, escaped to the UK in 1956, became a UK citizen  in 1977 and died of a heart attack in Kilburn, London in September 2002.   He was known for playing Paul Ross in Crossroads. Rebelling against the Soviets was one of the bravest things people have done in living memory, LL, and they deserve every honour.

Totally agree, have a look at this.    The Hungarian flag the kids are holding is the one from which those fighting for freedom tore the Soviet Hammer and Sickle.   LL

What I will never forget is the voice on the radio begging the West, the free world, anyone, to help them as the Soviet war machine started killing anyone who moved.mowed down Hunagiarns with their tanks. "Please, please help us ... " the man's voice was barely audible as he sobbed. And those he called to help the dying? They were too busy squabbling over the Suez Canal!! I was in Vienna, it is something that will remain with me forever. LL

It's all part of living, lily! And our family were able to assist many Uprising refugees, housing them in the flat and houses we owned in Vienna and then helping them get to safety. You can see why I dislike and despise commies, ie Corbyn and his ilk. LL

At a commemoration of a 1956 anti-Communist uprising, Hungary's right-wing leader Viktor Orban said his country must stand up to Europe's "Sovietization" and defend its borders against mass migration.

BUDAPEST — Celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Hungary’s revolution against Soviet rule ended with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s speech in front of parliament Sunday being drowned out by protesters whistling and shouting “dictator.”

One of the country’s most prominent historians, Krisztián Ungváry, who turned up to protest against the speech, was bleeding from the face after a pro-government member of the crowd punched him.
