Re: Battles to liberate Mosul and Aleppo from jihadists

If Trump has done this on faulty information (see USS Maine, Gulf of Tonkin, yellowcake, etc) - then won't the Dems be perfectly justified in calling for his impeachment?

At least 10 civilians have been killed in a Syrian village near the city of Raqqa, in an alleged air strike by the US-led coalition, Syrian media report.
The strike targeted a village to the west of Raqqa, SANA news agency reports. The attack caused casualties among the civilian population, SANA said, citing its local sources.

The alleged air strike and the same number of casualties was also reported by Syrian Tishreen newspaper, citing its sources.

Oh well, they can just be added to the 200+ civilians killed by the US air force in Mosul. And the four Syrian children killed by the US navy a few hours ago.

What was that about 'beautiful babies'?

There's nothing you can say, Lily, beyond this is utter madness. I haven't forgotten all the talk about invading Iraq and We're fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them here.

Well done, you kicked a hornet's nest, and now they're everywhere. And constantly bombing civilians, to no discernible end at all, does nothing except create more crazies out for revenge, and give them more excuses to attack Westerners.

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.

Trump security adviser urges Russia to rethink Syria support.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump's national security adviser is calling on Russia to re-evaluate its support for Syrian President Bashar Assad, leaving open the possibility of additional U.S. military action against Syria.

In his first televised interview, H.R. McMaster pointed to dual U.S. goals of defeating the Islamic State group and removing Assad from power. As Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was making the Trump administration's first official trip this week to Russia, McMaster said Russia will have to decide whether it wanted to continue backing a "murderous regime." Trump is weighing next steps after ordering airstrikes last week.

"It's very difficult to understand how a political solution could result from the continuation of the Assad regime," McMaster said on "Fox News Sunday." "Now, we are not saying that we are the ones who are going to effect that change. What we are saying is, other countries have to ask themselves some hard questions. Russia should ask themselves ... Why are we supporting this murderous regime that is committing mass murder of its own population?"

He said Russia should also be asked how it didn't know that Syria was planning a chemical attack since it had advisers at the Syrian airfield. "Right now, I think everyone in the world sees Russia as part of the problem," McMaster said.

G-7 ministers aim to press Russia to end Assad support.

LUCCA, Italy (AP) — Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven industrialized nations are gathering Monday for a meeting given urgency by the chemical attack in Syria and the U.S. military response, with participants aiming to pressure Russia to end its support for President Bashar Assad.

Last week's nerve gas attack in the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun, which killed more than 80 people, stirred President Donald Trump to strike for the first time at Assad's forces. U.S. warships fired 59 cruise missiles at the Syrian air base from which the U.S. believes the attack was launched.

Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano, who is hosting the meeting, said Europe's broad support for the U.S. military strikes had contributed to a "renewed harmony" between the United States and its partners ahead of the first meeting of G-7 foreign ministers since Donald Trump took office in January.

"'We need to remember that not 10 years ago, but 100 or 120 days ago, the concern in Europe was that the United States and the EU were moving apart," Alfano told Sky TG24 Sunday. "I welcome this renewed harmony."

Tillerson's Russia trip highlights emergence from shadows

WASHINGTON (AP) — Criticized for his low-profile diplomacy, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is emerging from the shadows with a leading public role in shaping and explaining the Trump administration's missile strikes in Syria. And, he's set for an even higher-profile mission, heading to Moscow under the twin clouds of Russia's U.S. election meddling and its possible support for a Syrian chemical weapons attack.

Why bother about any of that boring 'evidence' stuff when you can tell the Big Lie? wker

Have these arrogant ars@eholes not noticed that the Washington-created Syrian mess is right in Russia's backyard? Not thousands of miles away and an ocean apart?

Are they incapable of grasping that, yet again, the US broke international law and attacked a sovereign state that is NO threat to the US? Or that ANY US serviceman in Syria is there illegally?

Why wasn't Trump sobbing over the many 'beautiful babies' killed by US ordinance in Mosul and elsewhere? When is the US going to tire of destroying other people's countries?

Probably the best course of action, Lily. Notice there has been no explanation as to where the 30-ish missing Tomahawks are? Rumours are rife on the internet that they met that electronic algorithm thingy the Evil Russkis are alleged to possess.

Another triumph for Washington:

http://news.sky.com/story/coalition-strike-mistakenly-kills-18-us-backed-fighters-in-syria-10835628

The American military admits a coalition airstrike has mistakenly killed 18 US-backed fighters in Syria.

Those who died south of the city of Tabqa were members of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), said the Pentagon.

The SDF is an alliance of Arab and Kurdish fighters who are battling Islamic State.

The US said its "partnered forces" had requested an airstrike after identifying what they said was an IS "fighting position".

But the target location was in fact where Syrian Democratic Forces were, rather than IS militants.

More follows...

It's like that old joke from WW2:

When a British bomber flies overhead, the Germans take cover. When a German bomber flies overhead, the Allies take cover. And when an American bomber flies overhead, everyone takes cover.

Bashar al-Assad interview: Syrian president says chemical attack is ‘100 per cent fabrication’.

SYRIAN President Bashar al-Assad has called claims that his government launched a chemical attack on his own people are “100 per cent fabrication”.

In his first interview since the attack, Assad said he believed that the US was working “hand in glove with the terrorists” and maintains that Syria gave up all its chemical weapons in 2013.

“There was no order to make any attack... We gave up our arsenal a few years ago. Even if we have them, we wouldn’t use them,” he said. “Our impression is that the West, mainly the United States, is hand-in-glove with the terrorists. They fabricated the whole story in order to have a pretext for the attack.” Link.

I have little doubt it's a fabrication, LL. Something obviously happened, but it just can't have involved sarin, you just have to look at the way the 'rescuers' are behaving, with impunity.

I think the answer is straightforward - the Syrian airforce dropped a bomb on one of the jihadists' weapons dumps - it's a matter of record that they have used crude chemical weapons multiple times.

And as has been pointed out - whatever else he did, Assad didn't use chemical weapons when he was close to defeat and the jihadists were only a few miles from the capital. So why on earth would he use it now, on an unimportant village, when he's on the brink of victory?

Russia, Iran and Syria issue warning to US.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, center, stands in the middle as Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem, left, and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif shake hands after a shared press conference following their talks focused on Syria in Moscow, Russia, Friday, April 14, 2017.

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia, Syria and Iran strongly warned the United States Friday against launching new strikes on Syria and called for an international investigation of the chemical weapons attack there that killed nearly 90 people.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who hosted his Iranian and Syrian counterparts in Moscow, denounced the U.S. missile strikes on Syria as a "flagrant violation" of international law. Additional such actions would entail "grave consequences not only for regional but global security," Lavrov said.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem said the meeting sent a "strong message" to Washington. Iran's Mohammad Javad Zarif emphasized that the participants agreed that unilateral actions by the U.S. were unacceptable.

The U.S. accuses the Syrian government of deliberately launching the deadly chemical attack in Khan Sheikhoun on April 4. Russia has alleged that the victims were killed by toxic agents from a rebel chemical arsenal hit by Syrian war planes.

Moscow has warned against putting the blame on Damascus until an independent inquiry is conducted and vetoed a proposed U.N. resolution on the attack, saying it failed to mention the need to inspect the affected area.

Lavrov on Friday expressed skepticism about a preliminary investigation conducted by the U.N.'s chemical weapons watchdog. He alleged that its experts failed to visit the site and said it was unclear to Russia where evidence was taken and how it was

In Russia's view, the probe conducted by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons should be widened to include experts from many nations, he said. "If our U.S. colleagues and some European nations believe that their version is right, they have no reason to fear the creation of such an independent group," Lavrov added. "The investigation into this high-profile incident must be transparent and leave no doubt that someone is trying to hide something."

Lavrov said the U.S. strike on the Syrian base has undermined peace efforts in Syria and reflected Washington's focus on ousting Syrian President Bashar Assad's government. "Such attempts won't succeed," he said.

The three ministers also discussed the beefing up of U.S. forces on Jordan's border with Syria, Moallem said. He added that Russia, Iran and Syria have "common procedures against any aggression," but wouldn't offer specifics.

Lavrov said Moscow has asked Washington about the purpose of the buildup and received assurances that the U.S. troops were deployed there to cut supply lines between the Islamic State group factions in Syria and Iraq.

"We will keep monitoring the issue, since the only possible reason for using military force on the territory of Syria is to fight terrorism," Lavrov said. Russia has staunchly backed Assad's government throughout Syria's six-year civil war. It has conducted an air campaign in Syria since September 2015, saving Assad's government from imminent collapse and helping to reverse the Syrian military's fortunes.

Yup.

Remember, last time, just for once, Obama showed some sense and didn't bow to pressure to set missiles flying. And in the fullness of time, it turned out that the guilty parties were the jihadists, with help from elements in Turkey.
