Kind-hearted donors have come to the rescue and raised thousands of pounds to replace Christmas toys stolen from a hospital.

About £3,000 of donated gifts were stolen from St Mary's in Paddington, London.

They were due to be given to seriously ill children staying in the hospital over Christmas and at a party in a few weeks' time.

Wrapping paper, LED candles and a Santa suit were also taken in the theft - which police say happened sometime between 3 October and 17 November

Staff and volunteers were "very upset", said Vicky Rees, head of fundraising at Children of St Mary's Intensive Care (Cosmic).

"You get that horrible feeling in your stomach - you've got lots of events coming up that you want to put on for the children and it was devastating when we saw it," she said.

But a fundraising page to help replace the toys has had a massive response, so far raising £19,000 - with nearly £2,000 added in just a few hours this morning alone.

One donor, Roger Southgate, wrote: "Stealing from sick children is deplorable ... As saddened as I was by the news, to see such amazing generosity has move me to tears. May the children of St Mary's have a very merry Christmas."

"We are asking people ideally to donate to the page and then we can buy the gifts directly," said Ms Rees.

"Although it is very upsetting for this to happen, actually the support has been absolutely amazing."

"It helps us because we have children with a range of complex needs. We have to match every gift up to every child."

The children at St Mary's Hospital are usually in a critical condition, with illnesses such as sepsis, meningitis and severe trauma.

Detective Sergeant Tom Hirst, from Westminster CID, described the theft as an "awful crime" and said it was "hard to imagine what kind of person would steal gifts so clearly destined for sick children".

Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101, or speak anonymously to Crimestoppers on on 0800 555 111 or at crimestoppers-uk.org.

Personally, I'd send the scumbags that stole the presents to labour camps for several years.

But good to see so many kind people stepping in to help.
