Parents banned from accessing Portugal's paedophile list
Parents banned from accessing Portugal's paedophile list
Created: 24 August 2016
childpovertyPortugal’s paedophile list has 5,618 names on it but parents are not allowed to know the details.
The register containing names and addresses of all of those convicted in Portugal of sex crimes against children was set up under a law enacted in November 2015.
At the time, the National Data Protection Commission said the establishment of the list was "inappropriate, unnecessary and excessive" saying it would lead to "stigmatisation and social exclusion."
Portugal’s State prosecution service argued against access for parents being able to access the list as this could result in a "very serious restriction of rights" that "can completely exclude the convicted person from any life in society."
These reservations led the Passos Coelho government to introduce an amendment before the final vote to keep the names on the list secret from parents.
In the original draft legislation parents and carers of children up to 16 years could question the police if a person was on the list if they had a well-founded suspicion.
The amended legislation was pushed through by the government majority with all opposition MPs voting against it.
The result is a list of 5,618 names on a list that parents can not access.

Re: Parents banned from accessing Portugal's paedophile list
this is a huge stupidity, it seems to me that is to protect these criminals, also to allow them to be free of any punishment, which is totally despicable, but, coming from PT, this is no surprise to me.

official list of names pedophiles have 5618 names in less than a year
The list of pedophiles, enacted a year ago and which entered into force in November last year, has more than five thousand registered names, but there are those who doubt its effectiveness.
According to the Ministry of Justice, the criminal identification registration convicted of crimes against sexual self-determination and sexual freedom of minors currently has with 5618 names.
But some experts admit, the register have little use on the ground.

dismantled child pornography network in Europe
European police detained 75 suspects in 28 countries in Europe for sharing on the Internet images of child pornography, announced today Europol on a more than 200 cases investigation.
The operation "Daylight" ( "Daylight") was initiated upon receipt of Switzerland coming from information concerning the existence of a large network broadcast of child sexual abuse images, said the spokesman for Europol, Claire Georges , quoted by the French news agency AFP.
"The investigation lasted over a year," he added, stressing that "processes information" identifying suspects or the addresses of their servers were then sent to 26 European Union countries and to Norway and Switzerland.
In a statement aside, Italian police said that the detainees were "unknown to the police services" and were "above suspicion".
These people, most with more than 50 years, "contributed secretly within the four walls of their homes, to feed the abject exchange network, with maximum attention to always get the most new material."
Much of the suspects used the TOR network, a platform that ensures the anonymity of the Internet, had to Europol.
Digital networks of child pornography "remain an essential source for those who have sexual interest in children and seek images," said Europol in statement sent from its headquarters in The Hague.
According to the spokesman, there are victims of different ages, but sexual abuse of babies under 18 months are becoming more frequent.
The investigation is still ongoing and are expected more arrests in the entire European continent.

Just look at that thread. It's a litany of revolting crimes against children, and ridiculously light sentences. And remember, that is only about a tenth of the reported crimes, due to the Portuguese tabloids' fondness for reporting child abuse in gloating detail.

Nearly 6,000 people on Portugal’s child sex offenders register
A total of 5,739 names are included in Portugal’s new child sex offenders register, which next week will turn a year old.
Those on the list face seeing their name there for the next 20 years, the Ministry of Justice told Lusa news agency.
In August, the register was slammed by Marco Paulino, a forensic psychologist who told Jornal de Notícias that it “hasn’t really helped anyone on the field” and may even lead police and parents to let their guard down regarding a potential child abuser if their name is not on the list.

I am afraid I am always suspicious of anyone like Paulino, who seems to want to protect paedophiles.
