Argos drivers have decided to join in too, LL:

http://news.sky.com/story/argos-drivers-strike-threatens-mayhem-days-before-christmas-10694373

Drivers who deliver goods for Argos are set to go on strike just days before Christmas in a dispute over pay.

The Unite union said the three-day walkout from next Tuesday threatened "mayhem" for Christmas deliveries.

Argos said it had contingency plans in place and was working to prevent deliveries from being disrupted.

Members of Unite employed by Wincanton - a separate company - at a national distribution centre in Staffordshire are engaged in a dispute over holiday back pay.

Unite regional officer Rick Coyle said: "This strike by our members will cause havoc and mayhem to deliveries to Argos shoppers in the run-up to Christmas.

"There will be a lot of very unhappy Argos customers, if they don't receive the iPhones, TVs and white goods that they have ordered as presents for relatives this Christmas."

He said strike dates were only being announced as a last resort and that "Unite's door is open 24/7 to try and settle this long-standing dispute".

Argos said: "We would encourage both sides to keep talking with the aim of coming to a swift resolution.

"We also have contingency plans in place and can reassure customers we're working hard to ensure this will not impact our deliveries this Christmas."

'Unhappy Argos customers'? I don't think so, Argos will simply sack the whole damned lot of them and employ other drivers.

The unions appear to have forgotten that Argos is completely free enterprise, and not a hangover from the days when the State ran everything.

What an utter sh*t - and an irresponsible one, at that.

British Airways cabin crew vote to strike over pay

Flights from Heathrow could be disrupted over Christmas after staff in mixed fleet unit reject 2% offer,

British Airways cabin crew have voted overwhelmingly in favour of strikes in a dispute over pay, in a move that could result in flights from Heathrow being disrupted over the Christmas holidays.

Cabin crew in BA’s mixed fleet unit – who represent about 15% of stewards at the airline – voted to strike after rejecting a 2% pay offer on what Unite has described as “poverty pay” levels.

I can see a lot of strikers ending up unemployed, LL, this isn't the '70s, and the days of unions ruling the land are long gone.

I agree with you.

Workers should think about what Reagan did when the  Air Traffic Controllers had a strike.  He sacked the lot of them and then re-hired.

http://news.sky.com/story/argos-drivers-pre-xmas-strike-called-off-by-unite-union-10695941

A strike by drivers who deliver goods for Argos has been called off just a day after it was announced.

The Unite union had warned that a three-day walkout by drivers working for delivery firm Wincanton from next Tuesday threatened "mayhem" for the retailer's Christmas deliveries.

They will now vote on a new pay deal agreed between Wincanton and the union.

Following confirmation the strike had been suspended pending the new ballot, Argos said: "We're pleased that both sides (Wincanton and Unite) have resolved their issues.

"Once again, we'd like to reassure our customers that it's business as usual this Christmas at Argos."

A very wise move by the drivers.

I know many people hate Margaret Thatcher but she did break the stranglehold the unions had on the UK; when I was a teenager it seemed that there were more strike days than work days. Imagine what it will be like in the near future if Corbyn and Co managed to win power. LL

IMO, one of her biggest faults was that she went about things like a bull in a china shop, LL. It wasn't actually unreasonable to shut down heavy, old-fashioned, loss-making nationalised industries, but no structure was put in place to help regenerate the communities which were devastated, almost overnight.

There was a lot of hot air, as usual, but nothing practical was done, and that, IMO, is why there is still so much lingering resentment.

But as for breaking the power of the unions - if she hadn't, Britain would have gone under, and ended up like present day Venezuela.

I can't imagine most of Generation Selfie surviving a Winter of Discontent, LL.

TV shut off at 10.30pm, rolling power cuts, the dead unburied, rubbish not collected - and of course, no central heating, so no power showers, nothing. Burn what you can find on an open fire, or freeze. And read a book by candlelight - no, not the scented kind.

They can't imagine a world in which the Post Office had a monopoly of telephones, and there was a six-month waiting list for landlines.....

I guess we were made of sterner stuff, bonny, but then we had survived WW2 and come out the other end, bl**dy but unbeaten. LL
