Pécs is the first Hungarian “Learning City”

Pécs has successfully applied for the UNESCO Learning City Award, thus the town – the first Hungarian in the history of the prize – will become full member of the Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) in 2017. With this award the international organization recognizes and showcases good practice in promoting quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all at local level. The certificate has been granted to dr. Zsolt Páva, mayor of Pécs, on behalf of Arne Carlson, director of UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL).

This is our 'county town' - but is actually a city!!   What looks like a mosque in the picture below is actually a Catholic church, it was built by the Ottomans after they pulled down the original church, and when they were thrown out of Hungary the mosque was 'adapted' for Christian worship, but retains its outside appearance and also most of the Ottoman interior.     LL

Oddly, I wouldn't have realised that the church had once been a mosque, it reminds me of the London Knights Templar church...

Interestingly I too thought it looked like the Templar Church in London.
