Malaysia says Kim Jong Nam's body released to North Korea.
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — The body of Kim Jong Nam, the estranged half brother of North Korea's leader, was released to the North on Thursday, more than a month after his murder at Kuala Lumpur's airport unleashed a fierce diplomatic battle between the two countries.
Following negotiations that he described as "very sensitive," Prime Minister Najib Razak said Malaysia agreed to release the body in exchange for the return of nine Malaysians held in North Korea's capital. There were no details on what led to the breakthrough, but North Korea appeared to win some important concessions: custody of the body and the release of at least two suspects who had been holed up in its embassy in Kuala Lumpur. North Korea fires ballistic missile into Sea of Japan.
US-South Korean announcement follows threats by the North of retaliation against expansion of international sanctions.
North Korea says its launches are practice for attack on US bases in Japan.
North Korea has fired a ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan, according to South Korea and the US military.
The development comes just days after North Korea threatened to retaliate if the global community expanded sanctions targeting the country.
South Korea's defence ministry said the missile had flown about 60km on Wednesday. It was launched from the Sinpo region on North Korea's eastern coast.
"The military is keeping a close watch over North Korea's provocative moves and maintaining a high defence posture", it said.
The US military said it was a KN-15 medium-range ballistic missile which it had determined posed no threat to the US mainland.
Rex Tillerson, the US secretary of state, confirmed that North Korea had launched "yet another" intermediate-range ballistic missile.
"The United States has spoken enough about North Korea. We have no further comment," he said in a statement.
Japan condemned the launch and said it violated UN Security Council resolutions.
"Japan never tolerates North Korea's repeated provocative actions. The government strictly protested and strongly condemned it," Yoshihide Suga, the chief cabinet secretary, said.
North Korea is on a quest to develop a long-range missile capable of hitting the US mainland with a nuclear warhead, and has so far staged five nuclear tests, two of them last year.
Wednesday's developments came after US President Donald Trump said, before a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, that the US was prepared to go it alone in bringing the North to heel if China did not step in.
North Korea's foreign ministry on Monday criticised the US for its tough talk and for an ongoing joint military exercise with South Korea and Japan which the North sees as a dress rehearsal for invasion.
The "reckless actions" are driving the tense situation on the Korean peninsula "to the brink of a war", a ministry spokesman was quoted as saying by the official KCNA news agency.
The idea that the US could deprive North Korea of its "nuclear deterrent" through sanctions is "the wildest dream", it said.
Trump and Xi will hold their first face-to-face meeting on Thursday at the US president's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida where the growing tensions on the Korean peninsula are expected to be high on the agenda.
The hardened US stance followed recent North Korean missile launches that North Korea described as practice for an attack on US bases in Japan.
In February the North simultaneously fired four ballistic missiles off its east coast, three of which fell close to Japan.
North Korea is barred under UN resolutions from carrying out ballistic missile launches or nuclear tests.

Re: Fatty Spoonbanger sabre rattling again - fires missile into Sea of Japan
I can't remember where I read it, LL - I should have kept the link - but there is some talk that the real fear is not so much NK trying a conventional attack, but of them using their satellites and a small nuclear device to cause an EMP over the US mainland.
US cities would simply fall apart if that happened, and they'd be eating each other within weeks. And they wouldn't be able to retaliate.

Re: Fatty Spoonbanger sabre rattling again - fires missile into Sea of Japan
Well done, LL! Yes, that's what I was on about.
IMO, that is entirely plausible - more so than NK launching conventional nuclear missiles. All Hell has broken loose in US cities during power cuts - society would collapse if the whole grid was gone. No invasion needed, no conventional attack - outside the rural areas, the US would turn into something like The Walking Dead.

I can truly understand why he would do that, I guess there must be some kind of retaliation planned from here before he can do that?

Re: Fatty Spoonbanger sabre rattling again - fires missile into Sea of Japan
I just don't know what the outside world can do, Lily. If the US goes steaming in, there will be conflict with China. China may not like having a madman on its borders, but they will like having the US military there even less.
The worrying thing is, IMO, Fattie really is crazy enough to do anything - he could wipe out huge areas of South Korea with conventional missiles in a matter of hours, for instance.
Beyond China or the NK generals bumping him off, I can't think of any good answer.

Tillerson: China agrees on 'action' on North Korea as navy strike group sails.
As the US navy deployed a strike group towards the western Pacific Ocean, to provide a presence near the Korean peninsula, the secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, said China agreed with the Trump administration that “action has to be taken” regarding North Korea.
Tillerson told CBS’s Face the Nation, in an interview broadcast on Sunday, that when Donald Trump and Chinese president Xi Jinping met at the Mar-a-Lago resort this week, they “had extensive discussions around the dangerous situation in North Korea”.
“President Xi clearly understands, and I think agrees, that the situation has intensified and has reached a certain level of threat that action has to be taken,” Tillerson said.
Tillerson described a “shared view and no disagreement as to how dangerous the situation has become”. Full report at link.

Re: Fatty Spoonbanger sabre rattling again - fires missile into Sea of Japan
Remember how the weapons used on 9/11 were nothing more hi-tech than Stanley knives? And the USS Cole was blown up by a couple of crazies in a fibreglass boat?
If Fattie wants to make New York uninhabitable, all he needs is a rusty old freighter, a crew ready to die for their country, and something nasty in the hold.
All this flashy whizz-bangery seems to have replaced common sense, or any kind of survival instinct. I predict that if anyone really wants to attack the US, it will be by such low-tech means Washington won't even see it coming.

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-04-10/north-korea-says-loud-mouthed-trumps-reckless-syria-bombings-justify-their-nuclear-p
If a secondary goal of the Trump administration's recent bombing of a Syrian airfield was to send a strong a message to North Korea that their missile launch provocations will not be tolerated, it didn't work.
According to the Associated Press, a North Korean Foreign Ministry official recently spoke on the state-run Korean Central News Agency and described U.S. airstrikes in Syria as "absolutely unpardonable" and said they simply served to prove that its nuclear weapons are justified to protect the country against Washington's "evermore reckless moves for a war."
"Some forces are loud-mouthed that the recent U.S. military attack on Syria is an action of warning us but we are not frightened by it," the report said, adding that the North's "tremendous military muscle with a nuclear force as its pivot" will foil any aggression by the U.S.
"We will bolster up in every way our capability for self-defense to cope with the U.S. evermore reckless moves for a war and defend ourselves with our own force," it said.....etc

North Korea ATTACK imminent? Panic as Kim broadcasts ‘coded messages to secret agents’.
NORTH Korea has broadcast a series of cryptic coded messages – believed to be instructions to secret agents in foreign countries.
Mysterious random numbers were announced on a chilling state-run radio show last night.
Pyongyang Radio addressed “members of the remote education university” in the broadcast at 12am local time.
The message was believed to be instructions to North Korean sleeper cells undercover in foreign countries.
It is understood spies living abroad are able to understand the code and act on the instructions.
A similar message was aired on March 24 – just days before Kim Jong-un fired a missile into the Sea of Japan.
The message comes amid claims North Korea will detonate another nuclear bomb within 15 days.
In the programme, the announcer said: “From now on, we announce tasks of mechanical engineering review for the Unit 21 expedition members of the remote education university.
"Number 69 on page 602, number 79 on page 133, number 18 on page 216.”
It is the 31st encrypted broadcast since June 24 last year.
North Korea regularly used book ciphers to communicate with spooks in South Korea during the Cold War.
Pyongyang halted the broadcasts in 2000 as relations with the South thawed.
But leader Kim Jong-un appears to have resumed the practice.

Trump wants plan to destroy nukes.
Donald Trump has asked for military options to destroy North Korea’s nuclear program, as fears rise the rogue regime of Kim Jong-un is preparing a test within days to mark the 105th birthday of his grandfather and the nation’s founding leader Kim Il-sung.
The US President has ordered a US naval strike group to the region, raising the stakes against the hermit state.
The USS Carl Vinson super aircraft carrier and its battle group was due to visit Australia but is now steaming north from Singapore towards the western Pacific near the Korean peninsula in a show of force aimed at North Korea.
A joint command centre of Russian, Iranian and militia forces supporting Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad said last week’s US missile strike on a Syrian airfield had crossed a red line.
It’s feared Pyongyang may conduct another nuclear test as it prepares its first intercontinental ballistic missile test this year — a move that will eventually bring Australia and the US within range.
“The President has asked to be prepared to give him a full range of options to remove that threat (to) the American people and to our allies and partners in the region” Mr Trump’s national security adviser HR McMaster said. He said it was a “prudent” move against “a rogue regime that is now nuclear capable … North Korea has been engaged in a pattern of provocative behaviour.”
Mr Trump “agreed this was unacceptable, that what must happen is the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula”.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson yesterday directly linked Friday’s missile strike in Syria to North Korea, saying it illustrated America’s willingness to strike at rogue regimes. “The message that any nation can take is, ‘If you violate international norms, if you violate international agreements, if you fail to live up to commitments, if you become a threat to others, at some point a response is likely to be undertaken’,” he said
“In terms of North Korea we’ve been very clear that our objective is a denuclearised Korean peninsula.”
Mr Tillerson said China’s President Xi Jinping and Mr Trump, who held a summit in Florida at the weekend, agreed something needed to be done to cut North Korea’s weapons program.
North Korea has staged five nuclear tests, two of them in the past year, and satellite imagery suggests its may be preparing for a sixth.
North Korea lashed out at the US over the Syrian strike, describing it as “an unforgivable act of aggression” that justified Pyongyang’s decision to acquire nuclear weapons.
China’s Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Affairs, Wu Dawei, has travelled to Seoul for talks on the North Korean threat. The US has urged China to do more to prevent the North from developing its nuclear weapons and missile programs and Mr Tillerson said at the weekend it was prepared to go it alone on North Korea.
Mr Trump said last week the US was willing to “solve” the problem of North Korea.

Defense in Kim Jong Nam murder case fear 'trial by ambush'.
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Handcuffed and facing the judge, two young women accused of poisoning Kim Jong Nam appeared in court Thursday as their lawyers said Malaysian police still have not handed over security camera footage and documents crucial to the defense.
Siti Aisyah, from Indonesia, and Doan Thi Huong of Vietnam are the only suspects in custody in the Feb. 13 killing of Kim, the estranged half brother of North Korea's ruler. Four North Korean suspects fled the country the day of the murder, police say.
"The accused person should not be denied her fundamental right to a fair trial," said Aisyah's attorney, Gooi Soon Seng. He said he has been waiting for police to provide CCTV footage and statements from three North Korean men who were questioned and released.
"Neither side may seek unfair advantage by concealing weapons behind its back. There should be no trial by ambush," Gooi said. The judge postponed the hearing until May 30. The women are accused of smearing Kim's face with banned VX nerve agent at a crowded airport terminal in Kuala Lumpur. But they say they were duped into thinking they were playing a harmless prank for a hidden-camera show.
The women face the death penalty if convicted. Gooi said he fears the women will become scapegoats because all the other people believed to have knowledge of the case have left the country. The four North Koreans who flew out of Malaysia the day of the murder are believed to be back in Pyongyang. And another three who stayed inside their country's embassy in Kuala Lumpur to avoid questioning by police were allowed to fly home late last month after Malaysia struck a surprise deal with Pyongyang to ease tensions.
But they say they were duped into thinking they were playing a harmless prank for a hidden-camera show.

Re: Fatty Spoonbanger sabre rattling again - fires missile into Sea of Japan
I suspect the court case is the least of anyone's worries right this minute, LL.
I've been reading assorted US sites, and Joe Sixpack seems to have the bizarre idea that Fattie is going to fold at the sight of an aircraft carrier bringing Some good old American whoop-ass. And Seal Team Six is going to get into his palace and bump him off.....
It makes me extremely uneasy, it's as if they think this is 1944 and they're going to storm the beaches and liberate Paris. I suspect it's far more likely they're going to get a bloody nose and set off God knows what chain of events.
I actually trust China to handle this problem more responsibly, and less jingoistically, with less bloodshed.

Trump on North Korea: “After listening for 10 minutes, I realized it’s not so easy”.
President Donald Trump recounted an absolutely astounding detail about one of his conversations with Chinese President Xi Jinping in comments published by the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday afternoon. Apparently, Trump came into his first meeting with the Chinese leader, in early April, convinced that China could simply eliminate the threat posed by North Korea’s nuclear program. Xi then patiently explained Chinese-Korean history to Trump — who then promptly changed his mind.
“After listening for 10 minutes, I realized it’s not so easy,” the president told the Journal. “I felt pretty strongly that they had a tremendous power [over] North Korea. ... But it’s not what you would think.”
Four quick observations about this:
Trump thought China could fix North Korea until the Chinese president politely informed him that North Korea is in fact complicated.
Trump seems to have required the leader of China to explain basic facts to him that he could have Googled, or at least asked one of the many US government North Korea experts about.
Trump came to a profound realization about one of the most dangerous conflicts on earth after a 10-minute conversation.
Trump is getting his information about East Asian affairs from the leader of America’s largest rival in the region.
Around the same time the Journal piece was published, North Korea informed reporters to prepare for a “big and important event.” Initial reports suggest that Pyongyang is planning to test a nuclear device for just the sixth time in the country’s history. There’s no word yet on how the Trump administration plans to respond.
.............................................
Trump just announced he’s betraying his biggest campaign promise on China.
He’s backing off from his vow to blacklist the country as a currency manipulator.
For years, Donald Trump has been fixated on taking China to task for manipulating its currency in order to give its goods an edge over competitors in global markets. He complained about it back in 2013 when he was a private citizen, and on the campaign trail he constantly vowed that he would put an end to it.
"On day one of a Trump administration, the US Treasury Department will designate China a currency manipulator," he wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed in 2015. In his Contract With the American Voter describing his plan for his first 100 days in office, he pledged: "I will direct the Secretary of the Treasury to label China a currency manipulator."
Well, it ain’t happening. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal published Wednesday, President Trump said that he wasn’t in fact going to deem China a currency manipulator.

That'll be like healthcare and tax reform, then?
Trump is getting his information about East Asian affairs from the leader of America’s largest rival in the region.
What's most concerning is that he doesn't seem capable of seeing elephant traps being laid by rivals. Or that the only side China is on - is China's. IMO, he needs to get back to his base ASAP, concentrate on sorting America out, and stop blundering into foreign affairs. I don't think he has much time left if he doesn't.
