French election: Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen estimated to be through to second round
Independent centrist Macron estimated to have taken 23.7% of vote with National Front leader Le Pen on 21.7%; official results to follow.
Different broadcasters are giving marginally different figures, but the basic picture puts Macron marginally ahead of Le Pen (some polling institutes have them dead level), with Fillon and Mélenchon trailing on around 19.5%. The Socialist candidate, Hamon, is way down on 6.5%.
The two second-round contestants seem clear. It will be the independent centrist versus the far-right leader – two radically opposing visions of France.

Just reading, LL:
http://news.sky.com/story/live-first-round-result-in-french-election-looms-10848373
A poll suggests centrist Emmanuel Macron has come first in the opening round
The same poll suggests far-right candidate Marine Le Pen was second
If the poll is correct, they will be the two candidates to go through to the final round
Conservative Francois Fillon was third and far-left's Jean-Luc Melenchon was fourth: poll
A total of 11 candidates battled it out in first round
Well. This should be interesting.

That reminds me, I saw a video of Obama calling to speak to Macron offering his advice. If only I knew where I had seen it......

Re: French election: Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen estimated to be through to second round
Oh God, Obama is as bad as Blair - they don't seem to know when it's time to leave the stage, the story has left them behind.
From what I've read about him, I don't greatly warm to Macron, he seems to be just another shiny-faced bankers' stooge. Though I suppose he's an improvement on the communist.
He'd better pray there are no more terrorist attacks before the next round.

A caveat here - although polls have put Macron in first place, the French interior ministry says Le Pen is narrowly leading Macron, with 34% of the votes counted

It'll come as no surprise to anyone that riots are in progress:
https://www.rt.com/news/385822-riot-police-clash-with-protesters-paris/
Protests in Paris in the aftermath of the vote have turned violent with smoke grenades, flares and glass bottles thrown at police.
RT’s correspondent Charlotte Dubenskij was tear gassed while reporting from the scene.
The rallies, dubbed the “night of the barricades,” are expected to take place in 13 cities across France.
READ MORE: Macron, Le Pen lead in 1st round of French presidential elections – projection
The protests erupted minutes after the polling stations closed in the first round of the presidential elections.
There is a massive riot police presence on the streets of Paris, with officers wearing full body armor, including shields and carrying batons and pepper spray bottles, as can be seen on images from a Ruptly video.
At some point protesters were seen throwing chairs – apparently from nearby cafes – at police officers.
At least one protester has been reportedly injured in clashes with police.
The protesters say they are unhappy with all of the 11 candidates taking part in the elections, according RT's Dubenskij.
Police are currently trying to kettle the crowd and block it off in one area to prevent the protest from escalating.
Protesters brought a makeshift guillotine to the Opéra Bastille to show their dissatisfaction with the elections, claiming they are against racism, sexism, fascism and basically anything that has to do with the establishment, Dubenskij added.

So, the polls were right for once - well done!
I really don't like Macron, he strikes me as being as smarmy as Blair, just a bankers'/globalist puppet, heavy on rhetoric and light on substance.
But hey ho, not my problem. And France appears to be joining the ranks of nations which are now split down the middle.

Re: French election: Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen estimated to be through to second round
Trump Was Wrong About France.
Thursday’s terrorist attack in Paris did not “help” Marine Le Pen.
Following Thursday’s terrorist attack on the Champs-Elysees in Paris, which killed one police officer and wounded two others, Donald Trump made a prediction. “The people of France will not take much more of this,” he wrote on Twitter. “Will have a big effect on presidential election!” It seemed like the American president was implicitly backing one of the leading candidates in that election, the National Front’s Marine Le Pen, who has campaigned on rooting out Islamic extremism from the Republic and practices a Trump-like brand of populist-nativist politics.
Then Trump dispelled any doubt about his message. The attack, for which ISIS has claimed responsibility, will “probably help” Le Pen’s chances, the American president told the Associated Press, “because she is the strongest on borders and she is the strongest on what’s been going on in France.” (This despite the fact that the Champs-Elysees attacker was a French citizen ensconced well within French borders.) Trump didn’t explicitly endorse Le Pen. But he effectively endorsed her sales pitch to voters. “I believe whoever is the toughest on radical Islamic terrorism and whoever is the toughest at the borders will do well at the election,” Trump said.

Re: French election: Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen estimated to be through to second round
Whoever wrote that hasn't looked at the voting pattern. Macron won in the cities, the very places with huge ghettos. Or noticed that between le Pen and the communist, more than 40% of French voters would happily set the establishment on fire.
Sweeping trouble under the carpet doesn't make trouble go away, and I really don't see a globalist puppet installed courtesy of the ghetto vote doing much for French unity.

Emmanuel Macron: The man in pole position to be France's next president
I just don't know why the chattering classes are painting Macron as some kind of 'anti-establishment' candidate of the Left. From everything I've read, he's little more than a puppet, churning out vacuous soundbites.
Oh well, it will be interesting to see where this leads....

Re: French election: Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen estimated to be through to second round
Russia 'respects' result of France's election.
The Kremlin on Monday said it respected the result of the first round of the French presidential election and hoped for better ties with Paris.
"We respect the choice of the French people. We are in favour of building good and mutually beneficial relations," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, quoted by state-run RIA Novosti news agency.
Pro-European centrist Emmanuel Macron and far-right leader Marine Le Pen claimed the most votes in the election Sunday to progress to a second round run-off on May 7.
Macron is clear favourite to become France's youngest president after topping Sunday's ballot with 23.75 percent of votes, slightly ahead of National Front (FN) leader Le Pen on 21.53 percent, according to final results.
Russia has been seen as a keen backer of Kremlin friendly Le Pen, who met President Vladimir Putin in a surprise visit to Moscow ahead of the vote.

There's why Macron won - the Paris vote. Contrary to his soundbites, this is not good for national unity.

No idea, Lily - probably. France seems to be badly split, though - I can see real trouble ahead.
I do know that, if you vote for an elitist Rothschild banker, don't be surprised if your life continues to be sh*tty, while the elitist Rothschild bankers continue to thrive.

Re: French election: Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen estimated to be through to second round
French far-right presidential hopeful Marine Le Pen has announced that she is temporarily stepping down as her party's leader.
The Front National leader revealed she would be quitting her role in her party to focus on the upcoming Presidential election.
Monday's move appears to be a way for Le Pen to embrace a wide range of potential voters ahead of the May 7 runoff between herself and Emmanuel Macron, the independent centrist who came in first in Sunday's first round.
