North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un's half-brother has reportedly been assassinated in Malaysia.

Kim Jong-Nam is believed to have been poisoned by two female Pyongyang operatives at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Monday, according to a report by TV Chosun, citing Seoul government sources.

The women used poisoned needles to kill him, according to the South Korean broadcaster.

The suspects immediately fled the scene in a taxi, it reported.

Malaysian police confirmed the 45-year-old was found ill at the airport and died on his way to hospital.

Kim Jong-Nam is the son of Song Hye-rim, a South Korean-born actress who is believed to have been a mistress of former North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il.

He was a known advocate of reform in North Korea and was vocal about his opposition to the nation's dynastic succession policy.

Understood to be Kim Jong-Il's heir apparent as his eldest son, he was overlooked for the succession after a botched attempt to enter Japan in May 2001 on a false Dominican Republic passport.

More questions than answers in death of North Korean royalty


SEOUL, South Korea (AP) February 15, 2017 — It looks like a perfectly staged assassination, straight out of the pages of a spy novel: North Korean royalty Kim Jong Nam, the estranged, exiled half-brother of leader Kim Jong Un, falls ill at a Malaysian airport, complains of being sprayed with some sort of chemical, and drops dead.

But, as with many things about the alleged motives of cloistered North Korea, the unknowns currently far outweigh the certainties. A look at what officials are trying to piece together as they work to reconstruct one of the most audacious, mysterious assassinations in recent Asian history:

WHY NOW?
This is the big one: Motive.

Kim Jong Nam, a jovial, overweight gambler and playboy, had embarrassed Pyongyang before — he tried to sneak into Tokyo Disney; he criticized his half-brother — but he's been generally seen more as an annoyance than an existential threat to North Korea's stability.

Why would Kim Jong Un go through the massive logistical trouble — and potential embarrassment — of staging the risky assassination of a blood relation on foreign soil?

Without elaborating, South Korea's spy service told lawmakers Wednesday that the North had been trying to kill Kim Jong Nam for five years. Spy officials offered a single, shaky motive for the death: Kim Jong Un's "paranoia" over his estranged brother.

But the South's National Intelligence Service has a long history of botching intelligence on North Korea and has long sought to portray the North's leadership as mentally unstable.

Some in Seoul wonder if Kim Jong Un might have become enraged when a South Korean newspaper reported last week that Kim Jong Nam tried to defect to the South in 2012. South Korea's spy service denied this, but it's still an open question: Could public speculation that a member of the exalted Kim dynasty wanted to flee to the hated South have pushed Kim Jong Un to order his brother's assassination?

WHY THE AIRPORT IN MALAYSIA?
There would seem to be easier, less public places to kill such a high-profile target.

A possible explanation might be found in another nugget provided by South Korea's spy agency: China had long protected Kim Jong Nam and his family in their home base of Macau. Analysts have seen Beijing as looking to Kim Jong Nam as a potential leader should North Korea's regime collapse.

With security, presumably overseen by China, tight in Macau, could there have been a security gap in Malaysia that offered North Korean assassins an opportunity they couldn't have gotten elsewhere?

WHO ARE THE MYSTERY WOMEN?
The details of the attack itself are a tangled mess as of now.

Kim told medical workers that he'd been sprayed with a chemical, which brings to mind past attacks with poison-tipped pens linked to North Korean assassins.

South Korea's spy agency says two women believed to be North Korean agents attacked Kim. They then reportedly fled. Japanese media quoted the government in Tokyo as saying those women may now be dead. None of this has been confirmed yet.

Still, finding out who these women are and who hired them could go a long way to unlocking the mystery.

WHAT NEXT?
North Korea has said nothing officially about the death, but that's not unusual. The country's propaganda specialists are masters at reporting only details that lionize the Kim family as paragons of virtue. This clearly doesn't do that.

China may be angry at the killing of a close North Korean contact, so there could be some sort of reaction, possibly back-channel, from Beijing.

But a more concrete punishment could come from Washington.

Cheong Seong-Chang, a South Korean analyst, said the assassination might convince the U.S. Congress to relist North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism, further isolating the already widely shunned country.

Trouble is, LL, yet more sanctions won't have the slightest effect on Fattie, but they will make the rest of the suffering population even more miserable, and give Fattie an external enemy to blame for everything.

I genuinely cannot think of a single example of sanctions having the supposed desired effect on whoever Washington decides is in error.

Washington would be better employed staging a mass airdrop of Big Macs, milkshakes and Coke, plus pre-loaded cellphones.

Did a South Korean news report doom Kim Jong Un's brother?

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Intelligence officials believe North Korean agents assassinated leader Kim Jong Un's exiled half brother, but if the whodunit seems settled, a very big question still looms: Why now?

Kim Jong Nam, reportedly killed by two female agents in a cloak-and-dagger operation in a Malaysian airport, had long been an embarrassment to North Korea's government — humiliated during a failed attempt to sneak into Japan to visit Disneyland and outspoken in opposing the rise to power of his brother, who had his uncle executed after taking over.

Kim Jong Nam's links with China may have also played a role. Beijing had long protected Kim Jong Nam, according to South Korea's intelligence service. China may have been interested in propping up Kim Jong Nam as a future North Korean leader should the current government in Pyongyang collapse.

Kim Jong Un would not have been pleased by knowledge that his brother was being used by Beijing as a pawn and potential replacement.

Now that sounds plausible - I really don't see China being too happy about having an unstable dictator on its doorstep. A malleable pawn, acceptable to North Koreans, on the other hand.....

2nd arrest in death of N.Korean leader's brother

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) February 16, 2017 — Malaysia police chief Khalid Abu Bakar has told the national Bernama news agency that a second woman has been arrested in connection with the death of Kim Jong Un's half brother, Kim Jong Nam. He said police will issue a statement soon with details.

The slaying of Kim Jong Nam, appears to be making few ripples so far in Macau, where he lived for years. The Chinese gambling hub is home to a small Korean community estimated at 240 people but staff at the city's handful of Korean restaurants and shops said Wednesday they had never seen him when shown his picture.

Several said Kim was unlikely to mix with Macau's Korean residents because most were from South Korea. Kim lived in a newer high rise building in the city's Taipa neighborhood across from a public park, according to photos published by South Korea's Yonhap news agency. A Filipino woman who lives in the building and declined to give her name said she saw him in the elevator but they never spoke.

Kim's teenage daughter attends Macau Anglican College after having transferred from an international school nearby, according to students at both schools. But none said they knew her or had seen her the day after her father's death.

Malaysian police say they have arrested a woman in connection with the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's half brother.

Wednesday's statement says the woman was arrested at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. She was carrying Vietnamese travel documents.

Mystery deepens, questions build in N.Korea princeling death.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) February 16, 2017 — What do we really know about the sudden death of an exiled North Korean princeling? Aside from heated media speculation and an instant "it's-gotta-be-Pyongyang" reaction from Seoul's spy agency, not much.

As the investigation continues, the mystery of just what happened to the half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as he waited for a flight in a Malaysian airport only deepens. Was Kim Jong Nam poisoned? Are the two female suspects trained killers or dupes? How can we be sure that North Korea, which seems the obvious culprit, was even involved?

South Korea's National Intelligence Service — no friend to Pyongyang — and eager reporters across Asia have assembled a dramatic, almost cinematic profile of the last hour of Kim's life. But there's still a surfeit of unanswered questions.

Here are a few:
WAS HE POISONED?

This one could be answered fairly soon.

Kim complained of being sprayed in the face with some sort of chemical before he died. Presumably Malaysian authorities' autopsy, which has been completed, will determine whether poison killed Kim, and, if so, what kind.

A big question is how possible killers would have managed to quickly inflict a fatal chemical dose on someone in the middle of a busy airport.

South Korea's intelligence service says Kim almost certainly was poisoned, but it's unclear whether a needle or spray was used, and the spy agency didn't elaborate.

One possibility for the poison is neostigmine bromide, which South Korean officials said was contained in a pen-like weapon used in a failed North Korean attempt to kill an anti-Pyongyang activist in 2011.

Or it could have been cyanide or sarin gas, according to a Seoul university professor who didn't want to be identified because Kim's autopsy results weren't out yet.

Sarin gas was used in a deadly attack on Tokyo's subways in 1995.

And if it turns out that Kim wasn't poisoned? Expect furious media backtracking, and flustered explanations in South Korea from the spy agency.
WAS IT REALLY NORTH KOREA?

North Korea, of course, is the easy answer.

South Korea's spy service considers the North the bogeyman and almost immediately, in a private briefing to lawmakers in Seoul, pointed the finger at North Korean agents for the death, saying that Kim Jong Nam had been targeted for five years because of Kim Jong Un's "paranoia."

Most news media have run with this, but, so far, Malaysian officials have provided no solid links to North Korea.

When asked Thursday if North Korea was behind the murder, Malaysian Deputy Home Minister Zahid Hamidi said, "That is speculation."

This doesn't mean that North Korea couldn't have orchestrated such an attack. It does fit a certain profile: North Korean agents have, at times, run wild in South Korea, killing defectors, sometimes with poison, and critics.
WHO ARE THE ARRESTED WOMEN?

The two women arrested in connection with Kim's death were spotted on surveillance video at the airport where Kim fell ill.

Both are reportedly in their 20s. One held an Indonesian passport. The other had Vietnamese travel documents and was seen in grainy photos waiting for a cab while wearing a white jumper emblazoned with "LOL" — internet-speak for Laugh Out Loud.

But their possible involvement in Kim's death is still unclear.

Were they simply in the wrong place at the wrong time? Were they North Korean agents, maybe even North Korean nationals using false passports? Kim Jong Nam, in one of his lowest moments, was humiliated while trying to sneak into Japan to visit Disneyland — with a Dominican passport.

Police are trying to verify if the women's travel documents are genuine, according to the Malaysian minister. Police said they have also arrested a third suspect, a Malaysian man thought to be the boyfriend of the suspect with an Indonesian passport.

If this was a carefully planned assassination — years in the making, as South Korean intelligence claims — it begs more questions: Would North Korean agents be so easily arrested — one of the women was picked up back at the airport, two days after Kim's death? Would they really take taxis from the scene of the crime?
ARE OTHER EXILED NORTH KOREANS IN DANGER?

South Korea's government said it was boosting security for high-profile defectors in the South, many of whom already have police protection.

Kim Jong Nam was long protected in his Macau base by China, according to Seoul's spy service. South Korean officials say he leaves behind two sons and a daughter between two different women living in Beijing and Macau.

Ha Taekeung, a South Korean lawmaker and North Korea human rights activist, said in a radio interview Thursday that Kim Jong Nam's son, Kim Han Sol, could be in danger because he knows sensitive secrets about Kim Jong Un's personal life.

Kim Han Sol, who lived with his father in Macao, referred to Kim Jong Un as a "dictator" in a 2012 interview.
WHAT WILL CHINA DO?

China, North Korea's most important ally, has said little officially about the death. Beijing reportedly saw Kim as a potential leader should North Korea's government ever collapse.

An editorial in Global Times, the ruling Communist Party's English-language newspaper, said Thursday that China would offer condemnation if Kim was found to have been assassinated.

"Regardless of how intense a country's political struggle might be, there is no doubt that it should never rely on assassination methods as means for its advancement," said the editorial. "Although a final conclusion has yet to emerge regarding Kim Jong Nam's sudden death, speculation remains sharply pointed at Pyongyang."

Family, friends describe 'nice girl' embroiled in Kim case.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) February 17, 2017 — Family and former neighbors of the Indonesian woman suspected of involvement in the audacious killing of the North Korean leader's half brother in Malaysia are stunned by the arrest of the young mother who they say was a polite and quiet "nice girl."

Siti Aisyah, 25, is one of three people arrested so far by Malaysian police for possible involvement in the apparent assassination of Kim Jong Nam. Between 2008 and 2011 she and her then-husband lived in a modest dwelling with flaking red paint in a narrow alley of the densely populated Tambora neighborhood in western Jakarta.

Her former father-in-law Tjia Liang Kiong, who lives in a nearby middle-class neighborhood and last saw Aisyah on Jan. 28, described her as a "very kind, polite and respectful person." "I was shocked to hear that she was arrested for murdering someone," he said. "I don't believe that she would commit such a crime or what the media says — that she is an intelligence agent."

The three suspects — Aisyah, a woman carrying a Vietnamese passport and a man said to be Aisyah's Malaysian boyfriend — were arrested separately Wednesday and Thursday. The women were identified using surveillance videos from Kuala Lumpur International Airport, where Kim Jong Nam suddenly fell ill Monday morning. Malaysian officials said he died on the way to a hospital after telling medical workers at the airport that he had been sprayed with a chemical.

Multiple South Korean media reports, citing unidentified sources, said two women believed to be North Korean agents killed him with some kind of poison before fleeing in a taxi. News of Aisyah's arrest has captivated Indonesia's scandal-and-mystery loving media, with some outlets characterizing her as a spy.

"Oh my God, how can I believe it," said Aminah, a housewife who is one of Aisyah's former Tambora neighbors. "She's very nice with all the people here, she's so naive. How she can kill a great man? No way, it's impossible," said Aminah, who uses one name.

Aisyah's mother, Benah, said by telephone that the family comes from a humble village background and has no ability to help her. "Since we heard that from the television, I could not sleep and eat. Same as her father, he just prays and reads the holy Quran. He even does not want to speak," said Benah. "As villagers, we could only pray."

Indonesia's Vice President Jusuf Kalla said Aisyah probably had been manipulated. He told reporters he believed she was not aware that she was participating in a murder. "From the information we have received and also what was circulating in the media, what has happened in Kuala Lumpur is Kim Jong Nam and Aisyah were victims. Aisyah was a victim of some sort of manipulation or fraud," Kalla said.

Indonesian Immigration spokesman Agung Sampurno said Aisyah had traveled to countries besides Malaysia since 2014 but he did not elaborate. Aisyah, according to Kiong, had only completed junior high school and moved to Malaysia with her husband in 2011 to seek a better life after the garment-making shop they ran from their home went out of business. The couple left their nearly 2-year-old son in Jakarta, who has been raised by Kiong and his wife since then.

Malaysia, which is approaching developed-nation income levels, is a magnet for millions of Indonesians, who typically find work there as bar hostesses, maids and construction and plantation workers. A year after leaving Indonesia, Aisyah returned to Jakarta and told Kiong she wanted a divorce from his son because he'd changed and the marriage had become unhappy. Kiong said his son gave a different account: Aisyah was having an affair with a Malaysian man.

The divorce was finalized in 2012 and Aisyah told Kiong she was living with her parents in Serang in Banten province that neighbors Jakarta and working in a shoe store. A few months later she was on the move again, telling Kiong she was working in a clothing shop on Batam, an Indonesian island near Singapore and Malaysia.

At their last meeting in late January when Aisyah visited her son, Kiong thought she looked very slim and when his wife asked if she was sick, Aisyah said she'd had a respiratory illness. Indonesian immigration said on Thursday that Aisyah entered Malaysia on Feb. 2 by ferry from Batam.

Rahmat Yusri, head of the neighborhood where Aisyah lived, did not believe she could commit murder. "I was so surprised when I heard that because I knew her well," Yusri said. "I did not believe it because she is an innocent, a quiet woman who came from a village."

He said she and another woman performed stunts which involved convincing men to close their eyes and then spraying them with water.

“Such an action was done three or four times and they were given a few dollars for it, and with the last target, Kim Jong-nam, allegedly there were dangerous materials in the sprayer,” Karnavian said. “She was not aware that it was an assassination attempt by alleged foreign agents.”....etc.

Pyongyang's ambassador said Malaysian officials may be "trying to conceal something" and "colluding with hostile forces."

Speaking to reporters gathered outside the morgue in Kuala Lumpur, North Korean Ambassador Kang Chol said Malaysia conducted the autopsy on Kim Jong Nam "unilaterally and excluding our attendance." Kim Jong Nam, who was 45 or 46 and had lived in exile for years, suddenly fell ill at the Kuala Lumpur airport on Monday as he waited for a flight home to Macau. Dizzy and in pain, he told medical workers at the airport he had been sprayed with a chemical. He died while being taken to a hospital.

"We will categorically reject the result of the postmortem," Kang said, adding that the move disregarded "elementary international laws and consular laws." Kang said the fact that Malaysia has yet to hand over the body "strongly suggests that the Malaysian side is trying to conceal something which needs more time and deceive us, and that they are colluding with the hostile forces towards us who are desperate to harm us."  More at  link

The man was identified as Ri Jong Chol, born in 1970. He was arrested on Friday night in Selangor state, the police said in a statement. He is the fourth suspect to be arrested in the investigations surrounding the murder in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.

Authorities are investigating whether Indonesian woman Siti Aisyah and another female suspect killed the 46-year-old North Korean exile in a shopping concourse at the international airport.

On Friday night, Malaysia performed a second autopsy on the estranged half brother of North Korea’s leader because the first procedure was inconclusive.

The second autopsy clearly enraged North Korea, which has vowed to reject the results of any procedure and demanded that Malaysia turn over the body immediately. Malaysia said on Friday it wanted DNA samples from Kim Jong-nam’s family as part of the autopsy procedure and that officials were not yet willing to hand the body to the North Koreans. Although Kim Jong-nam is believed to have two sons and a daughter with two women living in Beijing and Macau, police in Malaysia say none has come forward to claim the body or provide DNA samples.

“If there is no claim by next-of-kin and upon exhausting all avenues [to obtain DNA], we will finally then hand over the body to the [North Korean] embassy,” said Abdul Samah Mat, a senior Malaysian police official. He would not say how long that process might take.

Kim Jong-nam was estranged from his younger half-brother, the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. He reportedly fell out of favour with their father, the late Kim Jong-il, in 2001, when he was caught trying to enter Japan on a false passport to visit Tokyo Disneyland.

Kim Jong-nam: Will killing derail North Korea-China ties?

Beijing needs to do more to rein in North Korea: that's the view of US President Donald Trump and his new team. But how much leverage does China really have there and what are the chances of it being used, asks the BBC's Stephen McDonell in Beijing.

China and North Korea seem to be heading into yet another tense period in their recently rocky relationship.

Once brothers-in-arms fighting against "imperialist aggression" during the Korean War, now Beijing accuses Pyongyang publicly of breaching United Nations sanctions in the pursuit of its missile and nuclear weapons programmes.

Malaysia searching for 4 N. Korean suspects who left country

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) February 19, 2017 — Malaysia's senior police official says they are looking for four more North Korean suspects who had left the country the same day the North Korean leader's brother died after being attacked at the airport.

Malaysia's deputy national police chief Noor Rashid Ibrahim identified all four at a news conference on Sunday. He also identified a fifth person of interest and showed photographs of two more North Koreans who were not identified by name but are also wanted by the government in connection with Kim Jong Nam's apparent assassination on Monday.

Four people have been arrested, including two women, a boyfriend of one of them and a North Korean man.

If it was Fattie, then IMO, he's getting sloppy - there are far too many people involved in this plot.

N Korean envoy blasts Malaysians, calls for joint probe

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) February 20, 2017 — North Korea's top envoy in Kuala Lumpur has denounced Malaysia's investigation into the apparent killing of the exiled half brother of North Korea's ruler, calling it politically motivated and demanding a joint probe into the death.

"The investigation by the Malaysian police is not for the clarification of the cause of the death and search of the suspect, but it is out of the political aim," Ambassador Kang Chol told reporters Monday.

Police had "pinned the suspicion on us," he said, calling on Malaysia and the international community to work with North Korea on a joint investigation. Kim Jong Nam, the estranged brother of North Korean ruler, died last week after apparently being poisoned in a Kuala Lumpur airport. Kang, however, identified the dead man as "Kim Chol."

Malaysia recalls ambassador to North Korea

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) February 20, 2017 — Malaysia's ambassador to North Korea has been recalled from Pyongyang amid rising tensions between the countries over the death in Kuala Lumpur of an estranged scion of North Korea's ruling family.

The Malaysian foreign ministry said in a Monday statement that it had recalled its ambassador "for consultations" and had summoned Kang Chol, North Korea's ambassador to Kuala Lumpur, "to seek an explanation on the accusations he made against the Government of Malaysia."

Kang said Malaysia may be "trying to conceal something" and that the autopsy on Kim Jong Nam was carried out "unilaterally and excluding our attendance." Kim Jong Nam is the half brother of North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un.

The statement called Kang's comments "baseless," adding it "takes very seriously any unfounded attempt to tarnish its reputation."
