The main battleground is over council seats, but this by-election has just come in, and it looks very bad indeed for the government:

Labour's Emma Lewell-Buck has won the South Shields parliamentary by-election, with UKIP's Richard Elvin coming second.

And it looks like it's been a disaster for the Tories and Lib Dems. Which serves them right.
