Please tweet today to help us find our missing kids

Heartfelt plea from Kate McCann on
International Missing Children's Day

By ANTONELLA LAZZERI
Published: 10 hrs ago

KATE McCANN is urging Sun readers to get involved in today’s Big Tweet – and help find missing youngsters.
In her first piece written for a newspaper Kate, whose daughter Madeleine was abducted in 2007, says: “The more of us who take part today, the greater the chance a child can be found. It’s that simple.”
Kate, 45, is an ambassador for Missing People, the charity behind the Big Tweet which marks International Missing Children’s Day.
For the whole day they will tweet an appeal for a missing child every 30 minutes.

To show YOUR support, retweet the alerts – there’s more on how to get involved below. The Sun has pledged £10,000 to the charity if the number of retweets hits 50,000.
It is six years since Madeleine, then three, disappeared from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal. But Kate and her husband Gerry have never given up hope of being reunited with their daughter.
They have campaigned tirelessly for the Child Rescue Alert to be brought in across Europe. And they are delighted that an enhanced CRA is about to be launched in the UK.
Here, Kate outlines how such a system could have helped find Madeleine in the crucial first hours.
We also print Missing, the poem written by Clare Pollard for the McCanns that Kate has read aloud at Missing People events.
And she calls on big-hearted Sun readers to get tweeting: “Please help. Our children deserve this.”

Big Tweet
By Kate McCann, Mother of missing Madeleine
TODAY is International Missing Children’s Day. For millions of people it will be a day like any other. For my family, and the thousands of others in our position, it is a day of solidarity, when the world pauses to think about children who are still missing.

Each year more than 140,000 children go missing in the UK alone — they could more than fill Wembley Stadium.
Most will be found quickly and be safe from harm. Some will not.
Last year, when I took on a volunteer role as Ambassador for the charity Missing People, I helped to launch a partnership between the charity and the outdoor advertising industry.
Thousands of digital screens across the UK have shown, and continue to show, appeals for missing children on a weekly basis, for free.
This campaign has so far helped to find 54 vulnerable missing people — a fantastic achievement.
We are very grateful to the general public for their contribution to its success.

For 20 years now, the charity has had a great track record at reuniting families and, importantly, making sure a missing child has a place to contact, wherever they are and whatever situation they may be in.
The charity does all this with donations. They use a battered old office because it’s free.
They have hundreds of volunteers who give their time to remind communities across the UK to never give up on missing children.
When you face the pain of a child being missing you need to know people care and that every- thing possible is being done. The team at Missing People strive to achieve both.
The horrific night that Madeleine was taken from her bed, we mistakenly presumed that an instant alert would have gone out — to border agencies, to neighbouring countries, to the general public — to tell the world that a three-year-old girl had been abducted and thereby recruit as much help as possible in the search.
The reality was that it took hours to get the message out.
By the time the media, and hence the public, were informed, crucial hours had passed.
There was no simple and automatic system that could have got Madeleine’s image and relevant details into the public consciousness rapidly, to enhance the search and improve the chances of finding her. We will never know the difference this may have made. There have already been too many “if onlys”.

That is why, five years ago, Gerry and I lobbied the Government and the European Parliament to develop and put in place a Child Rescue Alert (CRA) system throughout Europe.

We believed then, and continue to believe now, that nationally-developed systems with cross- border co-operation can save the lives of abducted children.
We were very pleased and relieved with the success of this campaign.
Since this time, CRA systems have been developed and launched in various countries across Europe, including the UK.
Sadly, it is still only the minority rather than the majority of countries within Europe which have implemented one.
Of course, it is not just having a system which is important. Success relies on its correct and appropriate usage and the alert’s ability to reach as great a number of people (eyes and ears!) as possible.
And to state the obvious, a system will only work if it is used. This must not just be a “box- ticking” exercise.
All agencies involved must believe in the CRA and its value if abducted children are to benefit.
The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre and Missing People hope to provide an enhanced CRA in the UK.

It could, if successful, have in place the technology to reach millions of people in minutes at the touch of a button — similar to the system which has been available in the States for years. Our children deserve this. While Gerry and I were doing our research on CRAs, we travelled to the US to see the Amber Alert in action there and were extremely impressed.
Since it launched, 642 children have been successfully recovered, thanks to the system.
The recent events in Cleveland, Ohio, when three women who had been missing for years were found, reaffirms our hope of finding Madeleine, which has never diminished.
Their recovery is also further evidence that children are sometimes abducted and kept for long periods.
Until the new CRA system is ready in the UK, each of us can still help in the ongoing search for missing people.
Throughout today the Big Tweet for missing children is taking place online, with Missing People tweeting a different missing child’s appeal every 30 minutes for 24 hours. It is a fantastic way to spread the word about those who are still missing and all you need to do to help is just retweet an appeal or two.
The more of us who take part today, the greater the chance a child can be found. It’s that simple.
If you could help us reach 50,000 retweets of appeals for missing children, The Sun will donate £10,000 to Missing People.
Last year, with the help of Stephen Fry, Jack Dee, Victoria and David Beckham and the invaluable participation of many others, three vulnerable young people were found.

That’s three more children not facing harm and three less mothers worried sick every hour of the day.
Please help us if you can.
Your help has already proved invaluable.
Thank you.

Father's hope for missing daughter

The father of missing chef Claudia Lawrence, who vanished in March 2009, said the recent discovery of three women who went missing 10 years ago in the US has given him hope that his daughter will be found.
Speaking at a race organised by charity Missing People, Peter Lawrence said he hoped it would not take as long to find out what had happened to her.

He was attending the Miles for Missing People's 10km run on Clapham Common, south London, which was started by Kate McCann, whose daughter Madeleine disappeared on holiday in Praia da Luz in Portugal's Algarve in 2007.

Mr Lawrence said of the event: "It means a lot for the charity, which means a lot for me. It's good for raising the profile, I'm walking around with a poster with Claudia's picture on it. We've got to keep the profile in the media, because someone obviously knows what's happened to Claudia and one day we're going to find out. It's good to meet up with other people in the same position as you. Kate and I gave each other a big hug earlier this morning."

Mr Lawrence, who did not take part in the run himself but "handed out medals at the end and offered general support", said he had been heartened by the recent discovery of Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight in Ohio, a decade after they went missing in separate incidents. It does give you hope," he said.

"I just hope it doesn't take that long. It's difficult, some days are worse than others but we've got to keep going for Claudia's sake."

Around 500 runners took part in this year's race, which aims to raise funds for the charity's 24-hour helpline. Mr Lawrence said the helpline was "extremely important" by offering support to families of missing people across the UK.

More than four years have gone by since Miss Lawrence was last seen near her home in Heworth, York, on March 18, 2009. She was reported missing after she failed to arrive for her 6am shift at the University of York the next day. North Yorkshire Police launched a huge inquiry which has subsequently been scaled back.

Others attending the race included Rachel Elias, the sister of missing Manic Street Preachers guitarist Richey Edwards who disappeared in 1995.
