So, why didn't Gonc get Legal Aid?

Sofia de Landerset Kathy Belle, Mr Amaral requested legal aid but was NOT granted any. That is why we ask for the public to contribute to pay for his legal expenses. I would never ask for donations to a legal defense fund if Gonçalo Amaral had obtained any state support for his expenses.

Excuse me? Surely the only reason for him NOT to be given legal aid would be that, like Bennett, he has too much money?

And these fools are handing over their hard-earned cash to him with remarks like:

It's very odd, this business of Gonc having to scrounge for money. After all, he does share a lawyer with O Crime, and O Crime's head office is in Belize, so they can't be short of a bob or two.

Surely if Gonc's lawyer De Santos was at all confident of winning, he'd be waiving his charges, because Gonc would be keeping his other clients, O Crime, in 'exclusives from PJ Sources' for ever more.

Why does Amaral need funds? His lawyer is doing his stint probono in exchange for the rights to stories on the case.

A colleague of mine will also be in the court tomorrow listening to Amaral's O'Crime lawyer. He has been there since the beginning. Goncalo's lawyer I am told, reminds my friend of a Sicilian from years gone by and whose accommodation was once Alcatraz.  

Gonc's lawyer turns up in the Portuguese tabloids quite a lot, generally defending dirty cops and losing. Oh wait....

Sofia de Landerset If they don't win, they will appeal. And then appeal again. They can go up to the Constitutional Court, because they have invoked a constitutional right. After all appeals are lost, I personally think that the blame will land on the Portuguese justice system's lap. But this is just hypothesis. They may well win the case.

Gonc's lawyer clearly thinks the McCanns are going to win, too, or there wouldn't be frantic pleas for money to pay his bill.

Running away from Gerry McCann was a very, very bad move on Gonc's part.

I saw that on Myths, Pedro, interesting. I'm not sure - was he any good in the drugs squad? Announcing that drugs come into Portugal by sea doesn't really require too many brain cells. And I seem to recall he had the wrong person extradited to Spain - thankfully, the Spanish police were a bit more on the ball and realised Gonc had sent them an innocent person.

IMO, Gonc is a walking clusterf*ck. His life is one long shambles - had been, long before the McCanns had the misfortune to cross his path. Good God, he doesn't even seem capable of washing and dressing himself appropriately.

He can't blame the McCanns for his not paying his taxes, or trying to cheat his own brother out of a house. Or threatening to shoot his ex-girlfriend and her child, as in the Golden Bullets tape (verified genuine by Joana Morais).
