Re: North Korea announces hydrogen bomb test
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/feb/07/north-korea-launches-long-range-rocket-it-claims-is-carrying-a-satellite
Phew! It's OK, the UN is having a meeting to say how bad North Korea is - that's bound to solve everything!
Philip Hammond, the foreign secretary, said he strongly condemned the launch, adding: “In conducting this provocation, North Korea has clearly demonstrated that it is intent on prioritising the development of its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes over improving the wellbeing of its own people.
“As North Korea is aware, the UN security council unanimously agreed to take significant measures against any further launches or nuclear tests. We will now meet with our partners in New York to agree a collective response.”
Which will be exactly the same as all their other collective responses - a load of hot air and empty rhetoric. Do they seriously imagine the Norks have the slightest bit of respect for countries that can't even secure their own borders?

The chief of North Korea's military has been executed on charges of "corruption", according to a South Korean news agency.
General Ri Young-gil had been chief of the general staff for Kim Jong-un's regime since he was appointed to the role in August 2013.
He's bumped off another one.

Déjà vu; he's doing what Stalin did in the mid 1930s and Hitler did with the Brownshirts etc, wipe out the possible opposition, reduce the army to a cypher and thus consolidate absolute power. LL

South Korea begins Kaesong industrial park shut down.
S-in-L says this will really cause N Korea grief as they rely heavily on the salaries paid to their nationals, much of which is hived off by Fatty and his ilk for upping their nuclear program. Last shutdown ended after 4 months acrimonious shouting and threats. LL

PAJU, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Thursday ordered a military takeover of a factory park that had been the last major symbol of cooperation with South Korea, calling Seoul's earlier suspension of operations at the jointly run facility as punishment for the North's recent rocket launch a "dangerous declaration of war." North Korea implores its countrymen to build cars, grow food
PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — February 18, 2016
Produce more new-generation electric locomotives and passenger cars! Send more satellites into space! Make the whole country seethe with a high-pitched campaign for producing green-house vegetables! Become iron shields and red warriors who defend the party, system and people to the death!
North Koreans sit behind a banner with an exclamation mark during a figure skating performance held as part of celebrations on the "Day of the Shining Star" or birthday anniversary of late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il in Pyongyang, North Korea.
While the rest of the world was focusing its attention on North Korea’s recent nuclear test and rocket launch, the country’s ruling party announced a slew of new slogans Thursday intended to guide and inspire the nation ahead of a once-in-a-generation party congress scheduled for May. Judging from the number of exclamation marks, it appears they have a lot of work to do.
Even as North Korea is being threatened with new sanctions and more isolation for conducting a nuclear test and rocket launch, its ruling party announced new slogans to guide and inspire the nation ahead of a once-in-a-generation party congress scheduled for May. The number of exclamation marks would suggest North Koreans have a lot of work to do.
The slogans, issued Thursday by the Central Committee and the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, reflect what the party sees as the nation's priorities in the months and years ahead. The topics range from boosting the economy to becoming an international sports power and, of course, building more edifices in honor of the leaders and toeing the party line.
The nuclear bomb test conducted in January was mentioned just once, but it was a mouthful: "Let's dynamically wage this year's general advance in the same spirit as shown in succeeding in the H-bomb test!"
Some of the other slogans, as translated by the North's official Korean Central News Agency: ON THE ECONOMY: "Achieve a great victory on the front of agriculture this year!" "Make the whole country seethe with a high-pitched campaign for producing green-house vegetables!"
"Build modern mushroom production bases like the Pyongyang City Mushroom Farm across the country!" "Let's turn the country into the one of orchards!" "Let's give a decisive solution to the problem of consumer goods!"
"Decisively improve the fishing industry of the country by making a revolution in it!" "Make the foreign trade multilateral and diverse!" "Let the people enjoy the highest quality of civilization on the highest level!"
ON IDEOLOGY: "Build more edifices representing the era of the (ruling) WPK and the spirit of the Korean nation!" "Let us take it as the lifeline and the key point to implement the behests of the great leaders!"
"Always advance straight ahead, following the party!" "Let us resolutely foil the aggression and intervention moves of the imperialists and dominationists!" "Let us put an end to the anti-DPRK hostile policy of the U.S., the source of confrontation and escalation of tension!"
ON THE MILITARY: "Send more satellites of Juche Korea into space!" "Let us thoroughly implement our Party's policy of putting all the people under arms and turning the whole country into a fortress!" "Develop and produce a greater number of various means of military strike of our own style that are capable of overwhelming the enemy!"
"Let the defense industry sector make a positive contribution to building an economic giant and improving the people's standard of living!" "Let us fight devotedly for respected Supreme Commander Comrade Kim Jong Un!"
"The Korean People's Internal Security Forces should sharpen the sword for defending their leader, system and people!" ON ARTS, EDUCATION AND CULTURE: "Become the sparks setting fire to the hearts of the masses and detonators giving full play to their mental power!"
"Consider it as the revolutionary ethics and revolutionary party discipline to work and live in a simple, honest and upright manner!" "Let us make the flames of educational revolution rage furiously in the new century!"
"Create new legendary stories about sports of heroic Korea in international games!" "Bring about a revolution in media and literature and arts in the new century!"

Astounding. Really amazing - no wonder Fattie is so determined to keep the Evil West out of his kingdom. Still, I suppose new slogans make a nice change - North Korean news that doesn't involve nuclear warheads or executions.
I am sorry for the people who have to listen to this rubbish and act impressed and dutiful.

I suppose that's one way of keeping people employed - an awful lot of North Koreans seem to be busy doing non-jobs. The countryside is lovely, but the cities are ghastly - grey and soul-destroying. Socialists seem incapable of creating beauty, or even colour - the horrible high-rise housing Labour threw up in the UK isn't much better.

US student Otto Warmbier given hard labour in North Korea
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-35818581
I feel sorry at this news, but at the same time I wonder when these kids will realise that, if you visit another country you obey their rules, even if you are diametrically opposed to their way of life. I visited East Germany when it was under Soviet rule, at no time would I think of interfering in the way the country was ruled - it is for the citizens to instigate change, not for some gung-ho 21 year old to take state property because, as he claimed, "some religious group asked him to bring back a souvenir"!! Maybe the sentence is harsh, but the tensions running between NK and the USA are very real and he hasn't helped by his stupid act. LL

Re: North Korea announces hydrogen bomb test
Warmbier, 21, was arrested for trying to steal a propaganda sign from a hotel while visiting North Korea in January.
He later appeared on state TV apparently confessing and saying a church group had asked him to bring back a "trophy" from his trip
Oh, what an absolute idiot! I will be honest, LL, I have little sympathy for these wannabee 'martyrs'.
It's like Iran; it is perfectly legal for Iranians to be Christians, but it is NOT legal for these American idiots to try to convert non-Christians.
Then they start arguing about 'religious liberty'; forgetting that old saying about When in Rome...

Re: North Korea announces hydrogen bomb test
North Korea is officially an atheist state, and government policy continues to interfere with the individual's ability to choose and to manifest his or her religious beliefs. Therefore visitors are advised NOT to do or say anything that bucks their state beliefs. LLlily wrote:It is something that visitors/guests etc should NEVER do in muslim countries.

North Korea has threatened to lay waste to Washington with a submarine-launched nuclear missile in a menacing propaganda video.
The four-minute film - titled Last Chance - runs through the history of US-Korea relations, including images of US prisoners of war on Korean soil.
It ends with a digitally-enhanced sequence showing a missile emerging from the clouds and slamming into the road in front of the Lincoln Memorial - sending a wave of destruction across Washington.
As the US Capitol building burns, a message flashes up on the screen in Korea: "If US imperialists budge an inch toward us, we will immediately hit them with nuclear (weapons)."
The video, published on North Korea's propaganda website DPRK Today, shows the capture of the US spy ship Pueblo in 1968 and the first crisis over North Korea's nuclear programme in the 1990s.
Very nice, Fatty. But what happens when the US fires back?

Personally, I keep hoping one explodes on launch, and takes out a fair number of North Korea's top brass, as happened many years ago in the Soviet Union.
Soviet generals were dying in 'road accidents' for months after that.
