Shrien Dewani's extradition to South Africa over the murder of his wife during their honeymoon has been halted on mental health grounds.
Two High Court judges in London ruled that it would be "unjust and oppressive" to order the removal of Dewani, who is accused of arranging the contract killing of his new wife Anni in Cape Town in November 2010.
The British care home owner has been diagnosed with severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and severe depression. His lawyers argued that his health and life would be at risk if he was extradited.
The Dewani family welcomed the ruling, saying: "Shrien can only return to South Africa when he is well enough and when his personal safety can be guaranteed.
"Shrien is innocent and is determined to return to South Africa to clear his name and seek justice for his wife Anni."
Dewani has always denied any involvement in the killing, which took place after the taxi they were travelling in was apparently hijacked.
The taxi driver and Dewani were ejected from the vehicle in the Gugulethu township on the outskirts of Cape Town before it was driven away with Mrs Dewani still inside.
She was later found dead in the abandoned taxi with a bullet wound to her neck.
Tongo, who has admitted his part in the crime, claimed in a plea agreement with prosecutors that Dewani ordered the carjacking and paid for a hit on his wife.
The judges said they had taken into account the fact that Dewani was unfit to plead in deciding to stop his extradition for now.
However, they added it was plainly in the interests of justice that he should be extradited "as soon as he is fit" to be tried.
Members of Mrs Dewani's family were in court to hear the court's ruling.

I agree with Kitty he knew he was gay otherwise he wouldnt be having a gay relationship. Is it known that he had a pre-existing metal illness, and was his family and friends aware of it, or is it something that came about following the news he could be extradited to SA. jimo He wasnt sufficiently mentally impaired to go there on his honeymoon.
So, allegedly being gay not only makes him mentally ill, but also makes him a murderer?
Astonishing ignorance in this day and age.
