the remains of Titanic´s wreck are about 4,000 meters deep off the coast of Newfoundland.

The wreck of the Titanic, the ocean liner that sank in the waters of the North Atlantic on the maiden voyage in 1912, are now protected by UNESCO, issued a United Nations organization based in Paris.

"One hundred years after the shipwreck, the remains are to benefit from the protection of the UNESCO Convention for the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage", said the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in a statement quoted by Lusa.

"The remains of the Titanic are about 4,000 meters deep off the coast of Newfoundland. The wreck is in international waters and no State can claim exclusive jurisdiction of the place, "recalled the organization.

"Until now, the Titanic could not benefit from the protection of the Convention adopted by UNESCO in 2001, since this can only be applied to traces that are submerged at least 100 years", said UNESCO.

"From now on, the states that have ratified the Convention prohibit the destruction, pillage, sale and dispersal of the objects found at the site. They can take all steps within its power to protect the wreck and allow the human remains found inside are treated with dignity, "the organization concluded.

The UNESCO Convention for the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage, which entered into force on January 2, 2009, was ratified by some 40 countries.

The waters where they were located the wreck of the Titanic are currently polluted by waste from ships moving in that area. Many divers are authentic pilgrimages to the site, leaving plastic flowers and plaques from the wreck.

Regularly expeditions are organized to find new pieces, many of which are then displayed in exhibitions. Over the years, also been reported that some parts theft emerge at the surface.

The ocean liner Titanic sank in the waters of the North Atlantic maiden voyage to New York, after having struck an iceberg on the night of 14 to 15 April 1912, killing more than 1,500 people.
