Wednesday, 8 October 2008News after a long absence
Since early September, my activity in this page has been reduced. I came to Macau, on holidays, and I decided to accept a job offer. It is a full-time job, as editor of a local Portuguese daily newspaper, and I've been quite busy. I will keep posting, about Madeleine's case (*) but not with the same regularity. Soon, I'll have some interesting news, after a long and detailed analysis of the attendance sheets from the Ocean Club crèches.
One of the aspects that surprised me is the fact that several registrations, on those sheets, have the time (and signatures) when children (not the McCann's kids...) were left there, but no signature and no mention about the time they went out. This detail raises doubts about the level of control that Ocean Club staff had, concerning children in their crèches. Either the control was not as good as they referred, or there is something strange with those attendance sheets.

(*) I received a letter from Carter-Ruck, threatening to take me to court, if I don't stop immediately writing about the case - something I have no intention to do.

It was around the time of the Levy/Morais thingy. And as far as I can remember, Reis blogged that he was off to Macau to take over a newspaper which was a wonderful opportunity for him.

Well, I suppose someone had to spread Communist Propaganda amongst the Portuguese Natives who might make a fuss, or something. What better way to do it than through a Local Portuguese Rag.
It's quite simple if you think about it. The Chinese State controls their Media, so they would only allow a sympathiser to run a newspaper in Macau. I don't think we need to know any more than that.

He would only be allowed to run a Newspaper in Communist Macau if he toed The Party Line. China wouldn't be putting up with any weird ideas about Free Speach. But then you are only allowed Free Speach in Fascist Portugal if you support The Fascist section of The PJ. So not much change there.

I tend to agree, LL. No-one could possibly boast:

unless that was where his true sympathies lay. Even the manner in which he gives Macau its full, communist title is a giveaway - he could have just said I come under Macau law, and left it at that instead of rattling off the whole thing.

He may well have been a fellow traveller all his life, and is now reaping the rewards. As Sabot says, there is no way he would be running a news site in China if he wasn't trusted by the party bosses.

I think we can all do without lectures on the British media from the likes of him - personally, I prefer the Sun to whatever the Chinese version of Pravda is.

Sounds to me as though Paulo Reis is trying to weasle his way back into Portugal. Perhaps he's done the Party Propaganda Course and The Communists want him back in Europe to spread the word. That is not unknown either, LL

If he went on holiday and landed a job there and then, when did he learn Chinese - both spoken and written, though written would not be such a problem as the same characters are used for both? You would need to be fluent to edit and run a newspapre. And he would have to know both Cantonese and Mandarin - the latter is the official language but many Chinese speak Cantonese, not Mandarin; for instance Cantonese is the dominant language in Macau and Hong King. LL

I don't think that The Macau Chinese will have been important, LL. It will have been The Macau Portuguese that needed sorting.
Actually, it is far easier to learn to speak a Chinese dialect than it is to write it.
