STRONG EARTHQUAKE HITS NORTHERN ITALY
Strong quake hits North Italy, at least three dead

BOLOGNA, Italy | Sun May 20, 2012 2:43am EDT
(Reuters) - A strong earthquake rocked a large swathe of northern Italy early on Sunday, causing at least three deaths and bringing about the collapse of rural factories and ancient bell towers in towns.
The epicenter of the quake, which struck at 4:04 a.m. (0204 GMT) and had a magnitude of 6.0, was in the plains near Modena in the Po River Valley and the tremors were felt in nearby regions.
It was the strongest quake to hit Italy in three years.
One person working a night shift died in the collapse of a factory and two were killed when a modern ceramics factory made of steel crumpled.
Rescue officials were checking reports that other people were buried under rubble.
There was serious damage to historic buildings such as the 14th century Estense Castle in the town of San Felice Sul Panaro, near the epicentre.
There were fears that one of the towers of the famous mediaeval castle, the town's biggest attraction, could collapse. The town's main church was also severely damaged.
Thousands of people living in the area rushed into the streets after the quake, which shook the major towns of Bologna, Modena, Ferrara, Rovigo, Verona and Mantua. No serious damage was reported in the larger, heavily populated towns and cities.
A series of strong aftershocks hit the area, the strongest measuring 5.1, and local mayors ordered residents to stay out of their homes.
The quake was centred 22 miles north-northwest of Bologna at a relatively shallow depth of 6.3 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The last major earthquake to hit Italy was a 6.3 magnitude quake in the central Italian city of L'Aquila in 2009, which killed nearly 300 people.

Scarey photos, Rose, it could have been a lot worse.
It's wierd the way the clock tower has split down the middle, and that building with the diagonal slash looks peculiar too.

Another quake in Italy.
Eight killed as quake shakes Italy

Thousands seek shelter after Italy quake
A 5.8 magnitude earthquake which struck north-east Italy killed eight people and injured several others, police told the ANSA news agency.
The strong earthquake hit just nine days after a quake in the same area killed at least six people and left thousands in makeshift tent dwellings.
Three people were killed in San Felice del Panaro when a factory collapsed, two others died in the town of Mirandola, one in Concordia and one in Finale, police captain Salvatore Iannizzotto in Modena said.
The eighth victim, the parish priest in the town of Rovereto di Novi, was also found dead but Mr Iannizzotto said it was not clear whether he died of shock or was killed in the quake.
The quake was felt throughout northern and central Italy, forcing the collapse of several buildings already weakened by the magnitude 6.0 quake which hit on May 20.
The US Geological Survey said the quake hit at 7.00am (local time) 40 kilometres north-north-west of Bologna at a depth of 9.6 kilometres.
Local media also said a number of people had been trapped under the rubble.
"There are victims... The situation is very serious, some people are stuck under the rubble," Alberto Silvestri, the mayor of the San Felice sul Panaro told Italian television channel SkyTG24.
In Pisa, home of the famous leaning tower, offices were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
People ran out into the streets from shops and offices in Milan, Bologna and the Aosta Valley, close to the French border.
About 7,000 people who fled their homes in the region when the first earthquake hit are still living in about 89 tent camps erected in fields, sports fields, car parks and schools.
The camps can take up to 9,000 people.
Messages posted on Twitter and other social media suggested the shake was felt across northern Italy.
"We felt a very strong tremor," said Raffaella Besola, a resident of Bologna.
The region has been hit by a series of quakes and aftershocks over the past two weeks.
