Jubilee Celebrations Start Off With A Bang
The weekend's Jubilee celebrations began in Portsmouth, where crowds lined the coast to watch the aptly named HMS Diamond fire a 21-gun salute in honour of the Queen.
The Type 45 destroyer, one of the Navy's newest warships, made a ceremonial entrance into the harbour, accompanied by four Navy helicopters, two Merlin and two Lynx, hovering above in diamond formation.

It's a very Tudor idea, isn't it, LL? I hope the rain holds off for it, it should be spectacular.

Re: It's Jubilee Weekend!
I know the Tudors, from Henry V!!! onwards used the Royal Barge often as they seemed to like being seen from the safety of the centre of the River Thames! I am not sure how much earlier such transport was used in the UK, but we do know that Cleopatra used a similar transport on the Nile; the Thai kings used them too; in fact any ruler with a good river running through the capital would probably use one. Re: It's Jubilee Weekend!
And, as is expected, here come the moronic protesters:
What a load of pretentious risible tosh!!!! People are sick and tired of being told they must celebrate .... Oh, yes? Nobody is being coerced into holding a street party; I wonder what would happen under this republican idea? YOU WILL CELEBRATE OR WE WILL THROWN YOU IN JAIL?? Sorry, Long Live the Queen!!!! LL
Anti-monarchy demo 'loud and bold'
Press Association – 4 hours ago
Campaign group Republic said supporters from across the country will descend on the capital for the "biggest and boldest anti-monarchy protest of modern times". It will take place near Tower Bridge, on the south bank of the Thames by City Hall, close to the position the Royal Family will watch the passing boats.
Republic said it expected "hundreds of anti-monarchists" to join the protest, including representatives of the group's branches in Wales and Scotland, as well as a delegation from the Swedish republican movement.
Protesters said talks have been held with Metropolitan Police and reassured families intending to travel to Tower Bridge to watch the pageant that the protest will be peaceful.
They will hold placards and banners saying "citizen not subject", "power to the people" and "democracy not monarchy". Guest speakers at the event include human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell and columnist Joan Smith.
Republic's chief executive Graham Smith said: "Our message is to the wider public that there is an active and growing movement they can join rather than sitting and watching on TV. We are planning a peaceful protest and many families will be joining us.
"We can't wait for Sunday. Our loud, bold and provocative protest will be a major step forward for the republican movement and an opportunity to kick-start a real debate about the future of the monarchy.
"The royals spend most of their lives shielded from criticism; this protest will give them a rare glimpse of the strength of republican sentiment in Britain today.
"The hereditary system is offensive to all the democratic values this country has fought for in the past. The jubilee represents a celebration of everything we, as republicans, oppose. It is our right, and duty, to challenge it and promote the alternative.
"The heightened palace PR campaign of the last 18 months has already backfired. People are sick and tired of being told they must celebrate 60 years of one very privileged, very remote and very uninspiring head of state. The idea that the monarchy's future is any safer as a result of the jubilee is completely laughable."

Quite; it isn't compulsory. They can go to the pub, dig their gardens, wash their Che Guevara T-shirts, reread the Little Red Book -whatever.

Re: It's Jubilee Weekend!
That's a good link, Pedro, I am glad you are able to see it, it should be quite a show. It's a shame about the weather in London, it's dry and sunny here, even though the wind is very cold.
This is interesting:
The flotilla is the largest on the River Thames since 1662 - when one was held in honour of Charles II

Re: It's Jubilee Weekend!
I'm just watching the boats getting ready - and I am delighted to see that all kinds of flags are being flown - Cornish flags, regional flags, St George crosses, Saltires, everything.

They could always give back all of the Private Property that The Crown handed over to The State in exchange for The Civil List.

Re: It's Jubilee Weekend!
They're like the forkers - can't bear seeing anyone enjoying themselves, Sabot. Also, the taxpayers aren't paying for this, apart from security, and London is swarming with them anyway because of the Olympics.
The money's been raised by commercial sponsors and people donating their time.
So they can all STFU. I am no Union Jack-waver, but this is a historic event - we won't see it again in our lifetimes. And it is good to see so many people enjoying themselves.
So there!

There is a sense of unity and pride amongst the British people today. It is good to see, everyone enjoying themselves, especially the children with their little painted faces

Re: It's Jubilee Weekend!
I'm no Union Jack waver either. And I'm not sure I am even a Monarchist, but The Queen is an Institution that attracts money to Britain in all sorts of ways. She is Britain, probably the last bit left to be proud of. In sixty years she has never put a foot wrong, and she wasn't wrong about The Flag when Diana died. Although she had the sense to concede on that one.
The Jubilee and the like are what Britain does best, and it will be a very long time before another woman reigns for sixty years.

Re: It's Jubilee Weekend!
I think there is a great deal to be said for a head of state who is above politics, Sabot, and a constitutional monarchy provides stability.
Mind you, the Duke of Windsor would have been a catastrophe for the world, never mind the UK.

Re: It's Jubilee Weekend!
Sheesh. I daren't think about The Duke of Windsor, especially during the War. He was far too big for his boots, and causing scandals long before he got even close to being Crowned.
Nope, I think she is great, and I am so pleased that her Subjects are showing how proud they are of her.
