The same applies to Bennett, Bonny. Both Amaral and Bennett persisted in going too far. Did they seriously think that The McCanns would go on putting up with this forever?
Never have I seen a Couple behave with such fortitude and restraint as have The McCanns.
Both Bennett and Amaral have very seedy pasts, and you might think they would have had the sense to shut up while they were still ahead. So what has driven them to self destruction?

Arrogance? I don't know either. But both Bennett and Amaral pushed their luck, probably because no one had called them to account. With Bennett it was probably as simple as that. But with Cristovao and Amaral it was probably more State Aided. They had been getting away with not much short of Murder for a very long time. And don't tell me that The Portuguese State didn't know. Of course they knew what The PJ in Portimao was up to, if not else where. "Sent down from Lisbon" oh really. No one knew that they were missing for at least three days? No one else in Portimao Police Station knew that some poor woman was having seven bells of shit beaten out of her?
