Men attack religious retreat and kidnap seven girls

A group of armed men attacked a religious retreat on the outskirts of Mexico City have kidnapped seven girls, assaulting and robbing other people in the local Mexican authorities announced Saturday.

A statement from the Prosecutor's Office explains that the attack, which happened late on Thursday, was perpetrated in the youth center of the park Colibri, on the outskirts of Mexico City.

About 90 young people were in the camp devoting their time to prayer and religious studies. The attack was perpetrated by a dozen armed men who in addition to kidnapping, robbery and assaults have also sexually molested seven girls under age, the note adds.

Mexico is experiencing a climate of violence unleashed by the struggle for control of drug trafficking for more than six years.

Over 50,000 people have died since President Felipe Calderon in December 2006 ordered the federal police and army to attack drug cartels across the country.
