However, one of the most surprising facts presented by Gaspar is that the Portuguese economy is now expected to contract by 1% in 2013, instead of the Government’s projection of a 0.2% growth.
Not a very good time to pick a fight with yet more British holidaymakers, IMO.
I really feel for the people of Portugal, it must be a nightmare watching their wages get reduced every month, while prices soar.

There seem to be huge demonstrations going on in Lisbon today, Pedro - indeed, throughout Portugal, and Spain as well?

I'm just looking at the photos here:

Faro:
It looks very orderly and peaceful, demos tend to turn into pitched battles in the UK.
Mind you, I don't think I would bother arguing with the police dogs.

A striking image from Madrid:

I hope it goes off peacefully, and that the governments listen; we moan enough in the UK, but things are far worse elsewhere in Europe.

Thousands Rage Against Cutbacks In Spain
Police fire rubber bullets and baton-charge protesters attending a rally against austerity cutbacks and tax hikes in Spain.
Thousands of protesters have marched on Madrid's parliament building as anger over austerity measures and tax hikes increases in Spain.
More than 1,000 riot police blocked off access to the building in the centre of the capital.
Officers used batons to push back some protesters at the front of the march and fired rubber bullets as they charged crowds in central Madrid, according to reports.
The demonstration, with an "Occupy Congress" slogan, drew protesters weary of nine months of painful cutbacks imposed by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.
Spain is struggling with its second recession in three years, with unemployment near 25%.
Lionel Barber, editor of the Financial Times, told Sky's Jeff Randall: "What we're seeing now dramatically in the streets of Madrid is a (political) backlash.
"The other place to watch tonight is Barcelona, Catalonia, because Catalonia is moving towards if not independence, certainly a greater degree of autonomy.
"One of our correspondents who was in Catalonia last week sent me a text saying he'd been in the Baltic states in 1991 just before the break-up of the Soviet Union and he said Catalonia was like that."
The country has introduced austerity measures and economic reforms as it attempts to convince its euro partners and investors it is serious about reducing its deficit to 6.3% of GDP this year.
The deficit reached €50.1bn - equivalent to 4.77% of GDP - in August, the government revealed on Tuesday.
Secretary of state for the budget Marta Fernandez Curras said the deficit "is under control".
Spain has been under pressure from investors to apply for European Central Bank assistance to keep its borrowing costs down.
The government is expected to present a new batch of reforms on Thursday as it unveils a draft budget for 2013.

That demonstration looks as if it is turning nasty?

Live | Thousands demonstrate again before Congress
The protest of the 25-S returns to the square of Neptune. After the demonstration that left 35 detainees and wounded more than 60, the organizers have again called on citizens to protest
Thousands of people demonstrate again before the Congress of Deputies. The 25-S Coordinator has called a new protest in Neptuno (Plaza de Canovas del Castillo) and the Puerta del Sol in order to surround the Congress back for the third time this week and ask for the resignation of the government and the beginning of a process constituent. This third protest occurs even though the Judge of Instruction No. 8 Madrid has held that "there are sufficient grounds" to believe that those arrested during the first protest on Sept. 25 committed a crime against state institutions. Next Monday will decide if is inhibited in favor of the National Court.
