Austrians are not heavily religious, but like many European countries they do actually put the reasons for Advent to the fore and the celebrations take second place, not like some other countries where it is big business and a money making event. LL

I am not heavily religious myself, LL. But I do like Christmas to be what it is supposed to be.
Okay, so once upon a time it was a mid winter party when everyone was getting thoroughly pissed off with being shut up in a cave with their worst enemies. So why change the name and call it Christmas if they don't want to remember why.

I am afraid that what took over the festival was Big Business. I spent one Christmas in New York and hated it; I thought Christmas in London was bad enough but New York After that one time I invested in a return ticket to Vienna and me and the kids went there each year for Advent. It was so pleasant .... LL

Have never spent Christmas in New York or London, LL. My favorite has always been at home in L.A. but this last year was a non-Christmas here in the M.E. The first time in my life I have missed it.
