In an exclusive interview with the Algarve Resident last week, João Vasconcelos, a member of the CUVI and the face of the fight against the tolls in the region, said the commission was “working to turn this day into an epic fight against the destruction of the Algarve by calling for the suspension of the tolls”.

The CUVI invited all parliament members from the Algarve’s constituencies to the lunch-debate, but only Cecília Honório from Bloco de Esquerda (far-left party) showed up, with Paulo Sá from PCP (Communist Party) gracefully declining the invitation due to other commitments. Representatives from the PS, PSD and CDS parties did not respond to the invitation.

The CUVI believes that the situation “lies heavily on their conscience”, after Vasconcelos warned in his interview with the Algarve Resident that if rulers decided “to come to the region, they would be welcomed by the Algarvians in a manner that they deserve”.

I hope the MPs who didn't bother to show up are voted out at the next election.

Mendes Bota presented a formal request to Parliament, asking to know if any Câmara had decided to erect, on municipal ground, a monument to women victims of gender-based violence; this request was then forwarded to all 308 municipalities.

In the written request, to which the Algarve Resident had access, Mendes Bota stressed that despite all logistic, operational and legislative advances, which put Portugal in the lead in the prevention of violence against women, “this year (2012) 36 women were murdered by their present or former spouses, and in 2011 there were around 29,000 domestic violence complaints”.

That's an appalling total, and will only be the tip of the iceberg, as many women will be too terrified to seek help.
