BBC criticised for Newsnight axed Jimmy Savile report
An inquiry into Newsnight's shelving of a report into sexual abuse by Jimmy Savile has criticised BBC management but found no evidence of a cover-up.
It was not done to protect tribute shows to the late DJ and presenter, as some had claimed, said the report.
A separate report is critical of a Newsnight report which led to Lord McAlpine being wrongly implicated in child abuse allegations.
The editor and deputy editor of Newsnight are to be replaced.
The Pollard Review was set up by the BBC to see if there were management "failings" over the investigation, dropped by Newsnight in December 2011.
Tribute programmes to the late DJ and presenter were later aired on BBC TV over Christmas and New Year.
The report by Sky's former head of news Nick Pollard said: ""The decision to drop the original investigation was flawed and the way it was taken was wrong but I believe it was done in good faith.
"It was not done to protect the Savile tribute programmes or for any improper reason."
Responding to the report in an email to staff, BBC acting director general Tim Davie said he was "pleased to say that the review found no evidence of any improper pressure to prevent the broadcast of the Newsnight investigation or to protect the Jimmy Savile tribute programmes".
But he accepted that the "report exposed clear failings in some of our systems, the way we work together and make decisions".
The message also announced that:
Editor of Newsnight Peter Rippon would be replaced, and he was now in talks with the BBC about a possible new role
Head of BBC News Helen Boaden, who had stepped aside during the inquiry, would return to her post on Thursday
Deputy director of news Stephen Mitchell will leave the BBC next year

Re: Report on BBC handling of Savile scandal published
In the extremely unlikely event that anyone is still interested, another old bloke was arrested today:
Former BBC Radio One producer Ted Beston has been arrested by police probing the Jimmy Savile sex abuse scandal.
Mr Beston, 76, from Bromley, south east London, was detained at 6.30am as part of Operation Yewtree, the investigation into allegations of sex abuse surrounding Savile and others.

No doubt another feather in the ever-swelling cap of MWT.
You have to wonder why MWT wasn't boasting about this contemporary, and far more serious, matter:
Lostprophets Singer Held On Child Sex Charges
Ian Watkins, frontman of Welsh rock group Lostprophets, and two women are remanded in custody accused of child sex offences.
Lostprophets lead singer Ian Watkins has appeared in court accused of conspiring to rape a one-year-old girl among other child sex offences.
Watkins, 35, whose band have sold millions of albums worldwide, was remanded in custody to appear at Cardiff Crown Court on December 31.
The singer, from Pontypridd, is alleged to have conspired with a woman to rape the girl, Cardiff magistrates were told.
He is also accused of two incidents of conspiring to engage in sexual touching with two young children; possessing, making and distributing indecent images; and possessing "extreme" animal pornography.
The conspiracy charges related to a period between May 1 and Monday this week, while the indecent images related to a period between August 12 and Monday, the court heard.
Defending barrister Tom Crowther said his client - dressed in a black hooded top and looking visibly tired - would be denying the charges and argued that his celebrity status could help to enforce bail conditions.
He said that Lostprophets had cancelled a planned tour, Watkins had no previous convictions and his mother, who was sitting in the public gallery, was willing to put forward her house as a bail surety.
But presiding magistrate Alan Knight opted to remand Watkins - along with two women aged 20 and 24 - in custody.
The women, who face similar child sex allegations, cannot be named for legal reasons. All three will appear at Cardiff Crown Court on December 31.

Mark Williams-Thomas @mwilliamsthomas
Just finished reading the Pollard report- am surprised to see my name mentioned so many times when I was not interviewed, or asked 4 account
Well, why would he be interviewed? He's nothing to offer except decades-old hearsay. And I am sure he has noticed that he's lost his audience.
The latest fiasco - the police battering down the door of an ageing weatherman who is actually in the middle of the Atlantic just now - has been met with disinterest and disapproval of the police tactics.
Poor old MWT, he's had his fifteen minutes.
