Sentences of 156 years in prison for officers involved in massacre
A Brazilian court ordered him Sunday to individual penalties of 156 years in prison 23 military police officers who participated in 1992 in what became known as the Carandiru massacre, which killed 111 prisoners.
The award, announced at dawn by Judge José Augusto Nardy of Marzagão, refers to the first part of the process, which was divided into four stages.
In total 79 officers will be tried for the massacre occurred when military police entered in the prison of Carandirú in the state of São Paulo, to calm a riot.
The 23 police officers were accused of killing 13 of the 111 prisoners who died during the invasion and were sentenced to 12 years in prison for each murder.
Although the sentence to determine the sentence in a closed regime, the judge allowed the sentence of convicted to re-appeal of their sentence, free.
Three other defendants also tried in this part of the case were acquitted.
The massacre took place October 2, 1992 when the police invaded what was then the largest Brazilian chain to calm a riot.
The operation was led by the late Colonel Ubiratan Guimarães, convicted in 2001-632 years in prison, but was acquitted after five years without having gotten jail time.
In this first stage, which lasted for six days, was heard the then governor of the state of São Paulo, Luiz Antonio Fleury Filho, who argued in court that the order of entering the prison "was absolutely necessary and legitimate."
The prosecution contended that the 79 police fired with the "intent to kill" against prisoners who participated in the riot.
The police admitted in court that they have fired, but all said they could not make sure whether the shots made victims because the pavilion was in the "darkness".
For prosecutors, these reports are contradictory with the large number of head shots and recorded with the fact that there were no injuries on the floors where the elite corps of the military police did not act.
The 111 dead were hit by 515 shots, 126 of which in the head, according to the report of forensic experts.
The remaining three phases of the trial should take place later this year, according to the court.
