More than 40 Portuguese nurses hired by British hospital

More than 40 Portuguese nurses hired by British hospital
Forty-two Portuguese nurses filled more than half of the 70 places available and will arrive in the next two months the hospital Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn, Norfolk, in eastern England.
This group will join the more than 30 Portuguese nurses already working in the same hospital since 2011, which in total employs 1176 nurses and midwives of various nationalities.
"The reason is because they prefer Portuguese nurses which are trained to a very high level in Portugal and they are very popular with our patients," said Nikki Plaatjies Lusa, one of the senior nurses involved in the recruitment process in Portugal.
The accumulated experience and responsibilities that are used to take have been recognized in Portuguese nurses, some of whom have been promoted to senior positions.
It is the case of Liliana Lourenço, 25 years and natural of Aveiro, that after two years already have coordinating functions shift, "something that would be impossible in Portugal," he told Lusa.
Even recognized their professional skills, foreign nurses are accompanied by a monitor and receive training when they arrive, particularly on the colloquial language, linguistic expressions and lifestyles in the region, in addition to receiving financial support to find housing.
"I do not know anyone, but we have created bonds and now we are a small family," said Liliana Lourenço.
Besides Portuguese, Irish nurses were hired and several recent graduates from two local universities and from other parts of the UK, recruited at job fairs or visits to Portugal and Ireland.
There have been more recruitment of nurses in the group in Portugal by British hospitals, with the West Suffolk, Bury St Edmunds, 70 miles, recently announced the hiring of 40 professionals Portuguese.
Within six years, the number of Portuguese nurses coming to the UK multiplied by 39, becoming the second foreign nationality with the newest entries in the professional British.
Between April 1, 2012 until March 31 this year signed up 790 new nurses Portuguese in Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), which regulates the profession in the country, while in 2006/07 had been recorded only 20.
Over the past five years, enrollment of Portuguese nurses outnumber the two thousands, although the NMC does not have information on whether all continue to exercise in the country.

It's good for the NHS, and for the nurses, of course, but it's a shame Portugal will lose such valuable professional ladies.
