High Court: Sally Bercow's Lord McAlpine tweet was libel
A tweet by Sally Bercow about Lord McAlpine has been ruled libellous by the High Court.
Mrs Bercow, the wife of Commons Speaker John Bercow, published a tweet two days after a BBC Newsnight programme had wrongly implicated a "leading Conservative politician" in sex abuse.
Amid widespread speculation about his identity, she wrote: "Why is Lord McAlpine trending. *innocent face*."
Mrs Bercow said she was "surprised and disappointed" by the ruling.
A subsequent High Court hearing will determine the damages she must pay.
Last November, Newsnight implicated a Thatcher-era politician in allegations of sexually abusing boys in the care of a children's home in Wales in the 1970s and 1980s, but it did not name Lord McAlpine.
The former Conservative Party treasurer was then wrongly identified on the internet.
The BBC apologised unreservedly to Lord McAlpine and settled his defamation claim for £185,000.
After publishing her comment about Lord McAlpine, Mrs Bercow apologised in four subsequent tweets but denied that her original tweet had been defamatory.
But she added: "However, I will accept the ruling as the end of the matter. I remain sorry for the distress I have caused Lord McAlpine and I repeat my apologies."

He may struggle to understand it, of course, as the words have more than one syllable.

Re: BERCOW TWEET RULED LIBEL
Well, well. I knew what she meant, so you could almost guarantee that Judge Tugendhat would.
The funny thing is that while anyone with half a brain would know what she meant, the likes of Dodgy with no brain at all would have been the first to believe it.

How funny! Once again taking their cue from Icke and the Lizard People, the hounders have been investigating and joining the dots.
And because his brother is a Tory, the hounders have researched Judge Tugendhat and decided he's IN IT.
Did they check to see if he is a mason? Or maybe an owl-worshipping illuminati who will be attending the forthcoming meeting of Bilderberg Lizards at the hellhole-portal that is....Watford?

Everybody knows its a stitch up Sally Bercow vs Lord McAlpine ! [full ravings not copied due to obscene and libellous nature]
Better and better; Mrs Squeaker is IN IT now, as well.

I don't know how I feel about this Bercow woman, or her husband, poor man. She is such an embarrassment, but he does stick by her, and I admire him for that, if nothing else.
However, I don't care which one of them pays up.

I think she was on a no-win, no-fee with CR, so she probably won't have to pay all that much, Sabot - one appearance on Celebrity X Factor on Ice should do it.
I can't stand her. Vulgar woman. IMO.

Re: BERCOW TWEET RULED LIBEL
No, Bonny, she probably won't have to pay much on her own behalf, but there are Lord McAlpine's Costs, and I don't think the insurance will pay that.
Yes, she is vulgar, but she enjoys it.
More interesting that Carter Ruck actually got Insurance, so someone must have thought she would win. I never did.

Re: BERCOW TWEET RULED LIBEL
I wasn't sure, Sabot. It was obvious to anyone following the saga what she meant, but I wasn't sure if the law would agree.
I am glad Judge Tugendhat wasn't taken in by her *innocent face* bullsh*t - she knew exactly what she was doing.

It was the "Innocent Face" that clobbered her, Bonny. She might just as well have said, "ORLY?".
She knew very well what her Followers would make of her Tweet. LOOKAME, I'm the wife of The Speaker. I'm important, I am.

Can you imagine how much internet garbage Judge T. has had to wade through this year, to get a clear picture of what is actually going on?

Good. I hope he has. That bunch don't stand a hope in hell if any of them get dragged before a Court. And not just his Court.
This isn't just about Damages. There are other Penalties.
