The total number of hotel guests in the Algarve went up 1.7% in the first quarter of the year compared with the same period in 2012, due to foreign markets since the number of domestic tourists went down, the Algarve tourist agency has said.
In a press statement, the agency said that despite the drop, Portuguese tourists are still the most important and account for 30% of all guest stays.
Portugal, the UK and Germany are the three largest sources of tourists in the region. In the first quarter of the year the average occupancy rate was 24.8% climbing in February and March with increases in tourist resorts, apartments and apartment hotels and a fall in one and two star hotels.
The average length of stay was 4.5 nights. Low-cost airlines carried more than 70% of the passengers with Portuguese flag-carrier TAP Air Portugal in sixth place.
Wasn't very clever of TAP to join in the transport strike and strand thousands of people....I personally wouldn't fly on Ryanair or similar if they paid me, but at least they don't strike.
