That looks like fun, Pedro, though why jousting, of all things, is so popular in the 21st century rather escapes me...

Jousting is very much a man's thing, like caber tossing which is also from the distant past. Aldo jousting requires a great amount of skill, to be able to control the horse while at the same time trying to unseat your opponent with as very long and heavy lance. From Wikipedia:
Jousting is a martial game or hastilude between two horsemen and using lances, often as part of a tournament. The primary aim is to strike the opponent with the lance while riding towards him at high speed, if possible breaking the lance on the opponent's shield or armour, or unhorsing him.
Jousting emerged in the High Middle Ages based on the military use of the lance by heavy cavalry. It transformed into a specialized sport during the Late Middle Ages, and remained popular with the nobility both in England and Germany throughout the whole of the 16th century (while in France, it was discontinued after the death of king Henry II in an accident in 1559). In England, jousting was the highlight of the Accession Day tilts of Elizabeth I and James I, and also was part of the festivities at the marriage of Charles I.
Jousting was discontinued in favour of other equestrian sports in the 17th century, although non-contact forms of "equestrian skill-at-arms" disciplines survived. There has been a limited revival of jousting reenactment since the 1970s.

LL, what do you think the odds are of someone, in the year 2007, getting himself killed in the same manner as Henry II?

Re: Dark Ages return to Silves as 10th Medieval Fair sets up
I read the article and noted that "Though the former teacher travelled the country performing historical re-enactments in schools and at shows, he and his opponent had no experience of jousting." I also see the coroner stated there had been errors, "Anne Pember, the coroner for Northamptonshire, recorded a narrative verdict, noting that there were failures to ‘engage a rider with a proven track record’ of jousting, failure to ensure correct helmets were used and that the shield had been properly strapped on." What were the people in charge doing, letting someone who, although an experienced rider, was not skilled in jousting, to take part? Jousting is a highly skilled sport and can be dangerous and it shows that Channel 4, while boasting of how careful they are re H&S, were in fact at fault. LL, I don't think a little thing like not having a clue what he was doing would have stopped him getting on that horse...the general consensus is that he died as he would have wanted - taking re-enactment just that bit too far.
