Madeleine McCann: Portuguese cops probe paedophile ring theory as they reopen search
25 Oct 2013 00:00
Officers in Porto have finally reopened their probe into her abduction and believe foreign perverts kidnapped the then three-year-old
Police in Portugal yesterday began searching for a gang of five paedophiles they believe may have snatched Madeleine McCann.
Officers finally reopened their probe into her disappearance and identified “essential witnesses” not quizzed in the first investigation which closed in 2008.
The new suspects were spotted near the Praia da Luz apartment from where Madeleine was snatched.
Officers from Porto’s Policia Judiciaria believe foreign perverts kidnapped the three-year-old in May 2007. They were yesterday at the Algarve resort and will work with Scotland Yard to find Madeleine.
The Portuguese Attorney General gave the go-ahead for the fresh probe after compelling new evidence was uncovered.
A number of convicted British paedophiles in Portugal at the time are believed to feature on a new list of 41 potential suspects drawn up by the Met.
Networks with UK connections have been operating in Portugal for years because of lax sex offence laws. It is one of only two countries in Europe without a sex offenders’ register.
The new Portuguese police investigation, revealed exclusively in the Mirror yesterday, will run alongside Scotland Yard’s own hunt.
It has given fresh hope to Kate and Gerry McCann, more than six years after their daughter disappeared.
The couple said: “We are very pleased that the investigation to find our missing daughter Madeleine has been officially reopened in Portugal.
“We hope that this will finally lead to her being found and to the discovery of whoever is responsible for this crime.
“We once again urge any member of the public who may have information relating to Madeleine’s abduction to contact the police in Portugal or the UK.”
Police in Portugal shelved their investigation in July 2008.
A spokesman confirmed in a statement released yesterday: “Portugal’s Attorney General has determined the reopening of the inquiry relating to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann following a request from the Policia Judiciaria.
“The decision follows the presentation of new material justifying the reopening of the investigation.”
Public prosecutors in Portimao, the same judicial division tasked with the original probe into Madeleine’s disappearance, will be put in charge of the reopened inquiry.
Police in the town, where disgraced former police chief Goncalo Amaral was based, are expected to be asked to work under their supervision.
Detectives in Porto, who have been conducting a review of the Madeleine McCann case for the past two years, are thought to have requested the reopening of the case.
Earlier this month Scotland Yard spoke of a possible breakthrough after it emerged officers were analysing data from the phone records of people who were in Praia da Luz when Madeleine vanished.
They also released new e-fits including images of a man seen carrying a girl in pyjamas near the McCanns’ holiday flat.
Det Chief Insp Andy Redwood, who is leading the UK probe, believes she may have been snatched by a gang of men.
He said: “Madeleine McCann’s disappearance does, on one reading of the evidence, have the hallmarks of a pre-planned abduction that would undoubtedly have involved reconnaissance.”
He added that the family could have been under surveillance over the five evenings they were in the resort before Madeleine vanished.
Met Police revealed yesterday they had met Portuguese officers in Lisbon last Thursday for a briefing on the new lines of inquiry that have emerged in Portugal.
AC Mark Rowley, Specialist Crime and Operations, one of the two officers present at the briefing, said: “The meeting was very positive, and we and the Policia Judiciaria have a shared determination to do everything possible to discover what happened to Madeleine.
“Colleagues in Portugal fully shared with us the developments in their review, and the fact that they were taking the significant step of applying for the investigation to be formally reopened.”
He said British detectives from Operation Grange will now travel regularly to Portugal.
He added: “This is a welcome development, but both sides of the investigation are at relatively early stages, with much work remaining to be done.
"This new momentum is encouraging, but we still have a way to go, and as with all major investigations, not all lines of enquiry that look promising will yield results.”
Policia Judiciaria sources told Portuguese daily Publico yesterday that the reopening of the case was the result of the Porto review team’s work and had nothing to do with the Met Police probe.

Such a welcome change, and hearbreaking, too. I suspect that if anyone except that disgraced oaf had been in charge at the beginning, Madeleine could have been found long ago, maybe within days.

Portuguese police reopen Madeleine McCann investigation
GERRY and Kate McCann were given fresh hope today after Portugal's Attorney General agreed to reopen the investigation into their daughter's disappearance.
Public prosecutors confirmed the case would be reactivated more than five years after it was archived following a formal request from Portuguese police.
Officers based in Porto are understood to have presented compelling new leads to law chiefs separate to those being worked on by British police conducting their own probe.
A spokesman for the Attorney General's office confirmed in a statement released today: "Portugal's Attorney General has determined the reopening of the inquiry relating to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann following a request from the Policia Judiciaria."
"The decision follows the presentation of new material justifying the reopening of the investigation."
Public prosecutors in Portimao, the same judicial division tasked with the original probe into Madeleine's disappearance, will be put in charge of the reopened inquiry.
Police in the town, where disgraced former police chief Goncalo Amaral was based, are expected to be asked to work under their supervision.
Authorities in Portugal also slapped a secrecy order on the new material, banning it from being made public.
Madeleine's parents, in a joint statement released today through a spokesman, said: "We are very pleased that the investigation to find our missing daughter Madeleine has been officially reopened in Portugal.
"We hope that this will finally lead to her being found and to the discovery of whoever is responsible for this crime.
"We once again urge any member of the public who may have information relating to Madeleine's abduction to contact the police in Portugal or the UK.
"Please be patient and respect the work of the police as they endeavour to find the answers we so desperately need.
"In particular we request the media consider carefully Madeleine's safety and the integrity of the investigation in their reporting.
"Thank you for your understanding and support."
Detectives in Porto, who have been conducting a review of the Madeleine McCann case for the past two years, are thought to have requested the reopening of the case.
They are believed to have made the request so colleagues on the Algarve can formally interview potential key witnesses they have approached informally during trips to southern Portugal.
They are understood to be focussing on the theory Madeleine, three when she disappeared in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz, was kidnapped in a pre-planned snatch.
Portuguese daily Correio da Manha has reported officers have been looking at the possibility a foreign paedophile gang took Madeleine.
A spokesman for the Attorney General's office said she was unable to comment on the new lines of inquiry.
She said: "I do not know what they are and how significant they are and even if I did I couldn't comment because of the secrecy order.
"However it is clear from the statement we have released that the decision to reopen the Madeleine McCann investigation has been based on new elements that indicate it's a justifiable action."
No-one from the Policia Judiciaria, the Portuguse police force involved in the original investigation into Madeleine's disappearance, was immediately available for comment.
It was not clear today if police officers likely to be mobilised as part of the reopened investigation will be the same detectives as the ones who have been working on behalf of Scotland Yard following their formal request for help.
Home Secretary Theresa May made the request in a letter sent out in July.
The Algarve-based officers are thought to have been looking through phone records.
Earlier this month Scotland Yard spoke of a possible breakthrough after it emerged officers were analysing data from the phone records of people who were in Praia da Luz when Madeleine vanished.
Officers said they had identified 41 "persons of interest, including several Brits who were in Portugal at the time.
They also released new e-fits including images of a man seen carrying a girl in pyjamas near the McCanns' holiday flat.
Britain's top policeman Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said this week Scotland Yard detectives, who began a review of the Madeleine McCann case in 2011, now have the "best chance" of solving the mystery.
Madeleine McCann's parents were forced to employ teams of private detectives to continue the hunt for their daughter after Portuguese authorities shelved their investigation into Madeleine's disappearance in July 2008.
In May 2011, four years after her disappearance, Theresa May with the backing of Prime Minister David Cameron ordered Scotland Yard to begin a review of the evidence.
Earlier this summer the Met Police announced the review was being turned into a formal investigation.
The E-fits of potential new suspects, including a man carrying a child in pyjamas spotted near the McCanns' holiday flat, were released last week during a BBC Crimewatch special.
Last night it emerged the Portuguese probe will run in parallel with the Met Police investigation, dubbed Operation Grange.
Met Police revealed today they had met Portuguese officers in Lisbon on October 17 for a briefing on the new lines of inquiry that have emerged in Portugal.
AC Mark Rowley, Specialist Crime and Operations, one of the two officers present at the briefing, said: "The meeting was very positive, and we and the Policia Judiciaria have a shared determination to do everything possible to discover what happened to Madeleine.
"Colleagues in Portugal fully shared with us the developments in their review, and the fact that they were taking the significant step of applying for the investigation to be formally reopened.
"From the near future, MPS detectives from Operation Grange will travel regularly to Portugal under the terms of the ILOR in relation to the UK investigation.
"This is a welcome development, but both sides of the investigation are at relatively early stages, with much work remaining to be done. This new momentum is encouraging, but we still have a way to go, and as with all major investigations, not all lines of enquiry that look promising will yield results.
"Last week was a significant point in the investigation into Madeleine's disappearance, and I would like to thank the public across Europe for the overwhelming response to the appeals that we made here at home on Crimewatch, as well as in Germany and Holland.
"Today's development is good news. Combined with the formal re-opening of the Portuguese investigation today, and our ever closer working relationship, I believe that we have the best opportunity yet to finally understand what happened to Madeleine."

Re: 'Portuguese police hunting paedo gang'
That's a comprehensive report, Lily. I do hope the McCann-haters notice that the word 'disgraced' is now being attached to Gonc as if it's part of his name?

Officers from Porto’s Policia Judiciaria believe foreign perverts kidnapped the three-year-old, who would now be 10, the Mirror reported.

Re: 'Portuguese police hunting paedo gang'
Are we in a timewarp? Incredibly, assorted McCann-haters are believing inventions in CdM, regurgitated by the desperate Morais, all over again, calling the rag:
Proper news from a proper newspaper.
As opposed to the usual CM-imposed excrement from the UK Dung Heap Press.
Have they learned NOTHING?
Let's see what's on the front page of the 'proper newspaper' today:
Bernardina: "I like her tits"
---------
Cascais: Set fire to his father for not giving him money
========
Katy Perry celebrates anniversary with new album
========
Thief gets stuck in toilet house Port
========
girl lured and abused in Anadia
========
GNR sentenced to nine years in prison for killing child
=======
.....I'm sure everyone gets the idea. Anyone deluded enough to think CdM is a 'proper' newspaper needs to take a reality check. CdM's main claim to fame is that it is the paper of choice for Team Gonc to spread falsehoods, lies and leaks.
And it makes the old Sunday Sport look intelligent.

Some respectable alleged ex cop.
Bonny, having read through the CdM words of the day, it sounds like it could be a proper newspaper for the Gonc Club?
Regular intelligent beings might prefer something else.

Disgraced cop
Since those words are being used so much after the news that the PJ are totally on board, I imagine they are okay with him being referred to in that way? I mean, they would have checked with them first, sensitivities and all that.........

Re: 'Portuguese police hunting paedo gang'
The current PJ aren't going to give a flying one about Gonc and his gang, Lily, not now they want to strip him and Cristovao of his pension and perks. Let's not forget this:
http://www.cmjornal.xl.pt/detalhe/noticias/nacional/portugal/pj-pede-suspensao-para-investigadores
Gonçalo Amaral and Paulo Pereira Cristovao accused of attacks on Leonor Cipriano
PJ asks suspension for researchers
The Disciplinary Unit of the Judicial Police is seeking the suspension of Paulo Pereira Cristovao, Gonçalo Amaral and three inspectors of the PJ alleged involvement in the case of attacks on Leonor Cipriano, condemned the death and hiding the corpse of her daughter, Joan, in 2004.
A measure to Paulo Pereira Cristovao, former PJ does not make sense. "I was not notified of it and exonerei me of PJ in 2006, so there is no connection and can not be suspended for anything. Besides, if someone is proven to give as assaults and torture after the courts do not prove nothing then incurs a libel, "said the CM.
The five were accused by prosecutors of being involved in the beating of Leonor Cipriano during an interrogation at the PJ of Portimão. The CM could not get to talk to Gonçalo Amaral.
He may have managed to wriggle out of criminal liability - so far - but a PJ civil court is another matter.
So, in brief, the PJ won't hesitate to throw the oaf under the bus - notice it was only his old cronies who spoke up for him in court?

Good INNIT? No wonder he's been looking so bad. Staggering around, looking like he's slept on a park bench?
It must be dreadful to know you are persona non grata with the PJ.

Can't wait for Cristovao to be dragged into court, though given the astonishing, and vast, charges against him, it may be a while yet.
CdM sales will go through the roof with the muck that's going to be raked at the Cristovao trial.
