A newborn taken from his Wisconsin home while his mother slept has been found safe outside a gas station in Iowa.

Kayden Powell, who is nearly a week old, was discovered about 10.15am on Friday by the police chief in West Branch.

The chief heard the infant crying and discovered the child swaddled in blankets inside a tote bag outside a gas station 175 miles (282km) southwest of his home.

FBI acting special agent GB Jones said Kayden was in good condition and would be returned to his home in Beloit, Wisconsin.

"Our efforts are clearly focused on reuniting mother and child and the rest of the family members with the child," he said.

"That's the immediate focus. In fact we're taking steps right now to make sure that happens."

Federal, state and local law enforcement officers had been looking for the baby since early on Thursday when his mother discovered him missing from his bassinet.

A woman who had been staying in the same home as Kayden and his mother was arrested in Iowa on an outstanding warrant from Texas.

She was taken into custody at another gas station less than a half-mile from where the newborn was found, said West Branch Police Chief Mike Horihan, who has been hailed a hero for locating the infant.

"It's unique, let's just say that," Chief Horihan said.

"I have been in law enforcement for a while and nothing ever surprises me. But it's very unique and very special and I'm just glad everything seems to be fine.

"The baby seems to be doing just fine."
