70th anniversary of D-Day

Veteran, 89, Recreates D-Day Parachute Jump
More than 300 soldiers take part in the jump along with Jock Hutton, who parachuted into France in 1944.
Mr Hutton prepares for his jump, which he said would be "cushy"
An 89-year-old WWII veteran is reliving his experience of the D-Day landings by parachuting into the same field in France that he landed in 70 years ago.
Scotsman Jock Hutton joined more than 300 soldiers who are taking part in the parachute jump this afternoon to mark the 70th anniversary of the first stages of D-Day.
The troops come from the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States and France.
They landed in Ranville, the first Normandy village to be liberated on D-Day itself.
The descent was watched by Prince Charles and senior military figures - but the centre of attention was Mr Hutton.
Ahead of the jump, Mr Hutton, who was raised in an orphanage in Bridge of Weir, told the Daily Telegraph that it "should be cushy. All I have to do is put my feet up."
Mr Hutton was strapped to a current member of the parachute display team, The Red Devils, for his jump.
The 89-year-old is one of the last D-Day veterans from his regiment - the 13th Battalion of the Parachute Regiment.
His jump was followed by a fly past of two Spitfires and a Lancaster bomber from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
Twelve British troops then jumped out of a Dakota aircraft alongside hundreds more to make up the main descent.
The programme of events to commemorate the anniversary will continue into the evening and throughout Friday.
Coordinated fireworks displays will light up the coast from Sword Beach in the east up the Normandy coast to Utah Beach in the west.
Prime Minister David Cameron will then attend a midnight vigil at Pegasus Bridge to mark the moment the first soldiers landed in France in the early hours of June 6, 1944, to capture the strategic landmark.
Glasses will be raised in a symbolic champagne toast at Cafe Gondree, the first building to be liberated next to the bridge.
On Friday, major events include a memorial service at Bayeux Cathedral and the town's Commonwealth War Grave Cemetery.
The Queen will be accompanied by President Barack Obama, President Francois Hollande and President Vladimir Putin at an international event on Sword Beach and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will join veterans at Arromanches-les-Bains.

Wow!! Truly amazing and what a guy.
Visiting those sites is so humbling to begin with and then reading about the celebrations is very emotional.
God Bless all those Allies who were involved in D-Day. We owe them so much.

Re: 70th anniversary of D-Day
A wonderful story:

D-Day Veteran's Great Escape From Care Home
Police are called after an 89-year-old is reported missing by carers - only to learn he had found his way to Normandy.
An 89-year-old Royal Navy veteran has turned up in Normandy for the D-Day commemorations after ignoring a travel ban imposed by his care home.
Police were called to the man's nursing home in Hove, Sussex, on Thursday night when staff realised he had gone out at 10.30am and had not been seen since.
The man has since been named on social media as Bernard Jordan, a former mayor of Hove, and his carehome has tweeted a photo of him.
The pensioner 'went AWOL' wearing his war medals covered by a grey jacket and secretly boarded a coach to France.
Police initially searched the Hove area, speaking to bus and taxi companies and checking local hospitals in case something had happened to him.
Then, at 10.30pm on Thursday - 12 hours after he was last seen - a younger veteran called to say he had met the pensioner on a coach on the way to France.
He said the pair were sitting in a hotel in Ouistreham, Normandy, where world leaders have been mingling with veterans to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
Mr Jordan is said to be safe and well.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: "We have spoken to the veteran who called the home today and are satisfied that the pensioner is fine and that his friends are going to ensure he gets back to Hove safely over the next couple of days, after the D-Day celebrations finish."
Chief Superintendent tweeted: "Love this - 89-year-old veteran reported missing to us by care home who said he can't go to Normandy for D-day remembrance. We've found him there!"
Well done that man - not least for making busybodies look like plonkers!

Re: 70th anniversary of D-Day
I confess, I didn't watch Obama properly yesterday, he is bad for my blood pressure. Then I read the uproar about his gum-chewing.
What can you possibly say about such utter disrespect, beyond it's typical of the creature.
Obama has NO respect for anyone or anything, except Al Quaeda affiliates; the gum-chewing ends any doubts that the selfies at Mandela's memorial service was a one-off. I doubt if he actually knew why he was there, or any of the history of WWII, someone will have written his speech for him.
Yesterday, I also saw a clip of President Reagan's speech at an earlier D-Day commemoration. It was chalk and cheese.

I know, Bonny. I loved Reagan and he was so respectful of others in the world.
All this gum chewer thinks of is himself. It's all about HIM.

Re: 70th anniversary of D-Day
Dad had 4 passions, my mum, coffee, the sea and flying. He was able o juggle the sea and flying by joining the RAF and flying Spits in the Battle of Britain then transferring to the Fleet Air Arm and flying Sunderlands. He took part in the Berlin Airlift as well. He was one hell of a guy!! LL

Thank you but I don't think he is in any heavenly abode, he didn't believe in dieties. Said religion like politics is an abomination, a scorge! I tend to agree with him. LLlily wrote:This is for your father, in his heavenly abode.
