Re: Political, financial turmoil in Greece
Spain has shown that it is fully on board with the Brussels authoritarian direction of ending democracy. Those in power have simply convinced themselves that the people do not understand what is good for them so they must impose their will upon the people but raw force. How does this differ in any what from the justification of imposing communism? This is the death of all freedom and it is upon our doorstep.

Re: Political, financial turmoil in Greece
As I've said before, Lily, when mainland Europeans are pushed too far, they don't loot supermarkets, but they don't stop till they've burned down government offices/started civil wars/started actual wars. Just look at the history of Europe over the past few centuries - technology may change, but human nature doesn't.
Merkel and co are setting things up for a rerun of the 1930's - and look how well that ended! She's destroyed the whole concept of anything resembling a 'united Europe' and is bringing about the very things that the EU was supposed to make impossible.

I am afraid it is going to get worse before it gets better, Lily. Meanwhile....

Merkel and Schäuble under fire in Germany
Other Germans are furious with Merkel and Ms le Pen is furious with Hollande:
Speaking of France... Marine Le Pen has kept up her barrage of criticism of the Greek deal, which she says will have “heavy consequences” on French taxpayers and the the country’s debt.
She accused the European Union of “totalitarian” behaviour, in a statement released by the Front National, adding:
“It’s clear he [Hollande] wasn’t guided by national interest, making this terrible declaration on the day of this national holiday, that the interests of the French people come after “European interests”.
And the UK is fighting with just about everyone else because Osborne won't hand over any money. Perhaps they should all have a group hug and sing Ode to Joy.

Beethoven's 9th is such a lovely piece, too bad that it's ruined now. Although it was in a prominent position in A Clockwork Orange.

Re: Political, financial turmoil in Greece
IMO, that is what it's coming down to, Lily. And the IMF has now admitted that this Germany-inflicted misery CANNOT help Greece:

IMF Declares War On Germany: In "Secret" Report Lagarde Says Greece Will Need Massive Debt Relief
So, what's the point? What's it for? Revenge? Payback for Greece daring to rebel? Looting Greece as a warning to Italy, Spain and Portugal? It's certainly not what the EU was supposed to be about....

Peter Kazimir, the Slovak finance minister, ran into some controversy yesterday by tweeting that the compromise reached was tough for Athens because it was the result of their “Greece Spring.”
That was subsequently deleted but Kazimir has waded in again just now, changing “Greek Spring” to “Syriza Spring.
I hope that puppet remembers his words, when Slovakia hits hard times.

Re: Political, financial turmoil in Greece
After re-reading the Telegraph article, this jumped out at me.
Leaked documents from the IMF leave no doubt that the rescue was intended to save the euro and European banks, not Greece. More debt was shoveled onto the Greek taxpayers in order to buy time, both in 2010 and again in 2012, storing up the crisis that Europe faces today.
In an odd way, the only European politician who was really offering Greece a way out of the impasse was Wolfgang Schauble, the German finance minister, even if his offer was made in a graceless fashion, almost in the form of diktat.
They really have been dumped on just like those toxic securities that the others didn't want....
They would have been better off taking Schauble's offer.

Re: Political, financial turmoil in Greece
Some of the performances seemed to skirt the edge of taste, as Warren Stephens, an investment banking CEO, went on stage in a Confederate flag hat and sang a song referencing the financial crisis, to the tune of 'Dixie'.
