Their boycott of the Moscow commemorations is utterly shameful, frankly - and anything they say is gross hypocrisy as they are now BACKING neo-Nazis in Ukraine.

That alone makes a mockery of their wreath-laying, and spits on the memory of all those who died fighting fascism seventy years ago.

It's utterly shameful, Lily. I don't know about the US, but a lot of people in the UK are upset about it. Thousands of British sailors served - and died - on the Arctic convoys for starters.

I watched quite a lot of the Russian commemorations; I was pleased to see there were ordinary Americans and British people in the 'Immortals' march, where ordinary people carry photos and mementos of family members who died/served in the war through Red Square.

Long-term, it has done the West unquantifiable damage in the wider world, as explained here:

Obama has been a fool. His absence, joined to the lack of official commemorations in the USA (where was he?) is like saying the USA had nothing to do with winning WW2, that victory was entirely a Russian business. Which is not far off, given that the Red Army singlehandedly wiped out 80% of Hitler's troops.

Yet, the U.S lack of remembrance must be a bitter disappointment to the American vets who fought that war, some of whom were in Moscow yesterday with their old Russians pals. Thankfully, Russia did remember and welcome them
