They've had a lot of problems since Arpad and the chieftens carved out their new country. Ottomans (which wasn't too bad), Nazis, Russians, sorry Soviets and most of all the 1920 Treaty of Trianon which left Hungary as a landlocked state covering 93,073 square kilometres (35,936 sq mi), only 28% of the 325,411 square kilometres (125,642 sq mi) that had constituted the pre-war Kingdom of Hungary. They are a bit reluctant to take any outsider on face value, but under the circumstances can you blame them? Being half Austrian I am accepted without any reservation. LL

However, the Hungarian Communist Party (later Hungarian Working People’s Party), a Marxist-Leninist group who shared the Soviet government’s ideological beliefs, constantly wrested small concessions in a process named salami tactics, which sliced away the elected government’s influence, despite the fact the party had received only 17% of the vote.

That is an absolutely classic tactic of the hard Left. Thanks, LL, that was interesting, and filled in a few blanks.

Some pics of Nagy Imre (Hungarian surnames are first, given name second), PM at the time of the Uprising, who was arrested, given a show trial, shot and then buried face down in an unknown grave, a massive insult. After Hungary became free of the Soviets, he was disinterred and reburied with honors. His statue gazes across at the Parliament building. LL

It is very impressive and many people, both Hungarian and visitors, go and stand by him on the bridge and get their pics taken with him. LL

This is his reburial - thousands turned out to honour him.
