Human bones found near former Nazi research site in Berlin

BERLIN (AP) — Archaeologists in Berlin have unearthed a large number of human bones from a site close to where Nazi scientists carried out research on body parts of death camp victims sent to them by sadistic SS doctor Josef Mengele, officials said Thursday.

Experts have been examining the site in Berlin's upscale Dahlem neighborhood since a small number of bones were found there in 2014 during road work on a property belonging to Berlin's Free University.

In the dig they uncovered "numerous fractured skulls, teeth, vertebrae" and other bones, including those of children, Susan Pollock, a professor of archaeology at the university who was one of the leaders of the team, said in a statement.

I sometimes think that that the horrors of the 20th century are never going to leave us. I don't suppose it's possible to put names to these remains, and at least rebury them with a little dignity.

They could do something with them, like you say bury them in a special communal grave. With a lovely inscription etc.....?

If, as is thought,they are from Mengele, then the only thing that is certain is they are from the Jews, the communists, the gays and maybe from the mentally sick, or from his experiments on twins.   If they were bodies, ie there was skin, then maybe there would be signs of the tattooed number all prisoners were marked with.    But since the Nazis destroyed as much paperwork connected with the camps and Mengele as they could I would imagine this is impossible.  A memorial could be raised, I suppose, to 'ANON' as after all this time there is no way the bones could be identified.    The Shoah was of such an immense nature bones are being found now and more will be found in years to come.     LL
