Re: Explorers solve maritime mystery and find HMS Terror shipwreck
Explorers have discovered the wreck of HMS Terror - the ill-fated British explorer ship that vanished in the Arctic in 1845 during an expedition to Canada's Northwest Passage.
The Arctic Research Foundation says the vessel was found on 3 September and is a "perfect time capsule", as the ship's helm is in pristine condition.
HMS Terror was discovered 24 metres underwater in Terror Bay on the coast of King William Island in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago - exactly where an Inuit hunter said it would be.
The ship, under the command of Sir John Franklin, had set out to find the long-sought shortcut to Asia that ran from the Atlantic to the Pacific via the ice-choked Arctic.
But he and his 128 crew died after the ship became stuck in ice.
A great discovery! It's fairly shallow water, but probably too cold for human divers? I hope we get to see remote camera film, though.

Re: Explorers solve maritime mystery and find HMS Terror shipwreck
Google reveals we have some already:

On Sunday, a team from the charitable Arctic Research Foundation manoeuvred a small, remotely operated vehicle through an open hatch and into the ship to capture stunning images that give insight into life aboard the vessel close to 170 years ago.
“We have successfully entered the mess hall, worked our way into a few cabins and found the food storage room with plates and one can on the shelves,” Adrian Schimnowski, the foundation’s operations director, told the Guardian by email from the research vessel Martin Bergmann.
“We spotted two wine bottles, tables and empty shelving. Found a desk with open drawers with something in the back corner of the drawer.”

Quite a lot about it on that link.

Re: Explorers solve maritime mystery and find HMS Terror shipwreck
The wreck is in such good condition that glass panes are still in three of four tall windows in the stern cabin where the ship’s commander, Captain Francis Crozier, slept and worked, Schimnowski added.
“This vessel looks like it was buttoned down tight for winter and it sank,” he said. “Everything was shut. Even the windows are still intact. If you could lift this boat out of the water, and pump the water out, it would probably float.”
Good Heavens!

Re: Explorers solve maritime mystery and find HMS Terror shipwreck
A video has emerged of the wreck of the HMS Terror, which has been well preserved in the icy waters off Canada's King William Island. The ship's wheel (left) can be clearly seen despite being covered by barnacles and other sealife

More there. I hope a proper documentary is made, now two ships have been found and it is possible to piece together a little of what happened to all those sailors.
