Fire engulfs Grenfell tower block in west London

Cladding believed to have been used on Grenfell Tower is banned in the US, it has emerged, amid revelations that it would have cost just £5,000 extra for the contractors to apply a fire-resistant version of panelling to the building.

OMG. Those responsible would be put in front of a firing squad for all this in a few less 'civilised' countries....

Fire Brigade Union safety expert David Sibert said: ‘The principle that tower blocks are built on is that every flat is a fire-resisting box – every flat is completely surrounded by fire-resisting construction from the rest of the building.
‘So you should be able to set fire to your own flat and leave it to completely burn out and it won’t affect anybody else in the building.’

Excepting that when The Cladding caught fire when the window at the original seat of the fire shattered from the internal heat, and when the external heat from The Cladding shattered more windows from outside, setting fire to curtains and such, this might well have worked.

Who ever was responsible for passing the specifications for The Cladding is in serious trouble. I can hardly wait to see them all trying to talk themselves out of that one.

I doubt if many windows even shattered, Sabot. It was a warm night, so a lot of them would have been open, with curtains billowing about. Also, the original metal frames had been replaced with 'green' glorified plastic.

I am sure fire investigators will be looking at the original alleged source of ignition, the supposed 'exploding fridge'. Now, EU-approved 'green' fridges have been known to catch fire, but it wouldn't be the first time someone has set things on fire deliberately for an insurance claim, or to get better accommodation.

But the external fire was going to get in even open windows. Probably especially open windows. At least 90% of the flats on fire was caused from outside. The flats on the top three floors didn't catch fire from the 4th story flat where the fridge caught fire.

Do you watch Air Crash Investigation, Sabot? There's never just one thing that causes disasters, there is always a chain of events leading up to the crash, generally caused by people simply not doing their jobs...

I have no doubt that it was the damned cladding that caused the horrific death toll, but there are also stories about holes being made in internal walls for new gas pipes and not being sealed properly, which helped spread the blaze internally. And some of those who escaped reported seeing blue flames inside, which could only have come from natural gas burning.

I suspect the public inquiry is going to reveal a catalogue of horrors and sloppy work - and fire doors being propped open, unauthorised sub-lets, etc.

I was an Air Mechanic, Bonny. I know all about Air Crash Investigations. But in that sort of investigation it is always easier to track who did what, or didn't, because everyone has to sign for what they did.

Try sorting this one with high profile lawyers who will all be passing the buck.

Give me a shout in ten years time when some poor bugger is made a scapegoat.

The very fact that it's still upright suggests that the original building may have been rundown and tatty, but was well-enough built. It was the 'improvements' that have caused this disaster.....

Try sorting this one with high profile lawyers who will all be passing the buck.

Oh, I have no doubt that lawyers are going to make a fortune out of this, Sabot. However - one of their big problems is going to be the blogs, etc., from residents written some time ago warning that this tower was an accident waiting to happen.

Police say there is no suggestion so far that the fire was started deliberately.

He can't afford to have an-indepth investigation into the Grenfell affair as then the Labor government will be exposed as having known about the problems years ago and doing nothing about them, nor passing their information onto the incoming Tory government. Bad, bad move, especially as the emergency services have more than enough to cope with. Though that's probably why the Trots are doing it....

people of those angry crowds are correct to be angry, but, they should be angry with the owner of the building who didn´t showed any concern with the residents of the tower´s warnings, and not with the Prime Minister, because the tragedy that happened there it is not her fault.

People who are already upset and grieving are being stirred up by trouble makers from outside, Pedro.
