Teenager arrested after five acid attacks in London in 90 minutes

A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and robbery after a pair on a moped carried out five acid attacks in London.

Metropolitan Police said they were treating the separate attacks within 90 minutes on Thursday night as linked.

The assaults involved victims having their mopeds stolen by two men on a moped, police added.

They are appealing for witnesses and anyone who has video of the incidents to contact them.

At the start of the rampage, a 32-year-old moped driver had been approached by the pair as he drove towards the Hackney Road junction with Queensbridge Road.

The two male suspects had tossed the noxious substance into his face before one of them jumped on to his vehicle and drove away.

Police said the man had gone to an east London hospital and they were awaiting an update on his injuries.

Twenty minutes later, at 10.50pm, another victim had been sprayed with searing liquid by the pair on the Upper Street junction with Highbury Corner, Islington.

The victim was taken to a hospital in north London.

At 11.05pm, the attackers swooped on a man in Shoreditch High Street, hurling acid in his face.

His injuries were not life-threatening, police said.

Within 15 minutes, they appeared to have struck again, throwing the corrosive liquid at a man on Cazenove Road and causing "life-changing" facial injuries.

The final assault of the night was reported to police at 11.37pm, when another man was confronted as he sat on his moped in traffic on Chatsworth Road.

After again spraying the liquid in a victim's face, the moped was stolen and both attackers fled.

The Met said the teenage suspect remains in custody at an east London police station.

The force said in a statement: "Inquiries are ongoing and officers from Hackney CID are investigating.

"Any witnesses, anyone with information or in possession of footage of these incidents should contact police on 101 or tweet @MetCC. To remain anonymous you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

In his time, fights between rival gangs were the norm - no innocent passers-by were involved if it could be avoided. Nowadays anyone is a target, life is cheap. The twins were never gentlemen, one was a psychopath gay, the other a brute. LL

And it's on the increase: last year the number of reported acid attacks in London increased by 74% to 458. Since 2010 there have been 1,800.

There was a similar rise in the West Midlands and a national increase of 30%.

A teenager told the Sun newspaper this year: "It's easy to buy and will mess someone up good. I feel safer carrying it to school.

"For a fiver you get drain cleaner, or you can buy ammonia for £3 and keep it in a drinks bottle."

At one point, the pillion passenger jumped off the bike and ran with the 18in knife towards local residents in Harold Hill, Romford.
Residents were forced to flee the scene on Monday afternoon as the moped riders drove around the estate on Monday afternoon before police arrived.

No, they won't, Sabot, because actual British people are now a minority in London. Oh, noises will be made - but those two were slinging acid around are juveniles. They won't get long jail sentences, they'll go to a young offenders' institute and be out in a couple of years.

Why should I care? I just hope that the enraged public will inadvertently kill a couple of them.

Everyone is suffering from shock, horror at the moment, and hasn't actually got it's act together. But they will.

This mayhem is all going on in London, Sabot. A great many of the rest of the population wouldn't greatly care if a damned great wall was build round these areas where society has broken down, and they were all left to kill each other.

Does anyone in the rest of the US greatly care if Chicago gangstas shoot each other? No. Same here - just leave them to it.

It isn't that simple, Bonny. Although strangely enough it actually is.

I am a Londoner, and while I no longer wish to live there, there are Londoners who still wish to do so.. And as ever, London will fight back. Someone will actually take on one or two of these morons, and one or two of them are going to wind up dead.

Many officers worry they will not be supported by senior colleagues if someone is injured during a high-speed moped pursuit.

ncreasing numbers of police officers are deciding not to give chase to moped criminals for fear they will not have the support of senior officers if something goes wrong, Sky News has been told.

Moped-enabled crime has reached almost epidemic proportions - particularly in London. Here, there have been more than 16,000 moped-related crimes in the past 12 months - a threefold increase on the previous year.

Sky News was given exclusive access to join officers from Scotland Yard's moped crime task force as they tackled bike offenders in the capital.

Such crimes rose to prominence in the north London borough of Islington several years ago, but the teams are now confronting a problem that effects almost every borough in the capital.

Mopeds, scooters and other small motorbikes have become the getaway vehicle of choice for increasing numbers of criminals as they commit street robberies or carry out knife, gun and acid attacks.

Detective Superintendent Stuart Ryan, head of the moped crime task force, said tackling offenders on motorbikes poses significant challenges for his officers.

He said: "If you look at the cohort that are currently doing this crime, they are 13 to 19 year olds. The average age is about 15, and it seems to have become their crime of choice.

"The reality is that with mopeds, it is a challenge for us to slow the mopeds down or stop them because of the speed they're going."etc.
