Ministers: Prescott Used Govt Cash In Casino
http://news.sky.com/home/politics/article/16097473
Ministers have accused former deputy prime minister Lord Prescott of spending taxpayers' money in a foreign casino as they revealed details of staff credit card transactions.
Figures released by the Department for Communities and Local Government suggest Lord Prescott's staff spent £426 at Australia's Star City casino, £490 at a seafood restaurant and £75 at a Sydney aquarium in 2004.
Ministers are using the example to demonstrate what they describe as Labour's profligate attitude to public money.
But Lord Prescott has said he never had a government procurement card, which are used by employees to make small purchases.
Lord Prescott suggests the money was spent researching licensing laws
He told The Daily Telegraph he believed his officials may have spent the cash on food and drink during a trip to Australia to examine the country's casino licensing laws.
Housing minister Grant Shapps said: "Prezza seems to have a cavalier attitude to the public purse, playing Russian roulette with taxpayers' cash.
"We all know he liked to live the high life, but there is something fishy about the public footing the bill for him to go to an aquarium in Sydney.
"Unlike Labour, we are bringing in strong checks and balances to ensure this kind of wild spending can never happen again."
Ministers have also claimed civil servants spent £5,000 on a bongo-drumming away day, £258 on finger puppets and £120 on customised cakes during the Labour years.
Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude said a crackdown on spending using government procurement cards and reductions in the amount of first-class travel had saved £45m in one year.
Restricting civil service bonuses to just the top 25% of performers clawed back £15m and Cabinet Office figures will show a 40% reduction in the number of consultants, he said.
The Cabinet Office has published details of spending on procurement cards that amounts to more than £500 on its website.
